It looks like Epic has caught the all-seeing eye of Legendary Pictures with the announcement of its Gears of War movie project.
Legendary is known for their financing behind the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy.
Variety reports that multiple, unnamed, sources close to both companies have confirmed that talks are underway, but implied that no deal has yet been struck. Neither firm has yet commented on the rumors. If the deal were to go through, they would acquire everything from the Unreal Engine to Unreal Tournament.
Interesting to say the least.. would this be a good thing or a bad thing, because I'm entirely unsure.

Legendary is independant? I thought the WB owned them. Or, were like Mirimax/Dimension in relation to Disney.
But if so Legendary has a LOT of game fans in there who hate the crap games their movies became-Peter Jackson, Zach Snider most notably.

Do you remember what happened when Epic wanted to release free DLC for Gears of War?

Yeah I was just going to say, if anyone is going to buy Epic it will be Microsoft. Unless Microsoft is completely stupid.

I can see the new company now:
Legendary Epic.
Redundancy, repeated.

yeah, but both parties need to agree to the sale.
I mean, I guess its foolish to assume that one bad incident would make Epic swear off MS forever. But, even so, it doesnt matter if MS is first in line, it matters if Epic wants to be bought by them.
In fact, it wouldnt be hard to argue that Epic's and MS's corporate culture are at odds with each other.

Epic said they wanted the content to be free, Microsoft charged for it, Epic made a lot of money?

I was hoping someone would post a picture of the ex pro wrestler Lenny Poppo "sp" who gave himself pats on the back after executing a good move.

I thought Epic said that they aren't for sale?Apparently they're not (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3170909).
As you would expect, Epic VP Mark Rein has dismissed the notion, telling Develop it's simply "just another rumor." This isn't the first time Epic has been involved in acquisition rumors; Microsoft was reported to be looking to buy Epic earlier this year for $1 billion. Rein famously asked that people start predictions at $2 billion "because we don't want anyone thinking that we're cheap."

Microsoft just nixed a successful dev team not too long ago; I don't think they're looking to acquire more.

Microsoft could have had the most awesome stable of developers. Let all of "their" partners get snatched up. Hello, Bungie probably would have stayed because you wouldn't have had to force them to make Halo games.

Remember, the severance deal with Bungie is only for 3 Microsoft games, Halo related, other projects before that MS has the right of first refusal, and after Bungie is on its own.

That's what I mean. MGS's stable is empty and weak. Not knocking Lionhead and Rare, but it is. Then they have the nerve to break Ensemble up, at least by name.

Please, Silicon Knights will be MGS' next acquisition.

I could get behind that.
Although, Epic is going to need another publisher soon with Midway going down the crappy.
