Anyone tried out this game? It's a fairly simple Java web game with some pretty basic 3D graphics that is basically about carving out blocks and building structures on procedural maps. In the survival mode there are monsters that will attack you as well. I haven't really got into it too much yet, but it might be worth checking out if you have some time to kill.

http://minecraft.net/

The game is currently free and is in alpha, but you can purchase the game for $13 and get access to the in development version with the latest features.

Update:

Official CoG Server (Must be registered and logged in)

The server is listed in the Dedicated Server sticky (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?t=21769)...

I don't know. I see no mention of zombies in that game. Though yes, I do know that Minecraft borrows heavily from Infiniminer. Plus, Minecraft is still in development.

Edit: Yeah, I'm just not sure what to do with Infiniminer. I guess it's a team-based multi-player game? The gameplay is pretty similar, but Minecraft is both single-player and multi-player and is more about world-building, or in Survival mode, surviving against monsters than about just some basic multi-player.

Well, I just used an hour and a half. Pretty great. I built a lush plain bordered by a giant mountain with a smiley face. Then a river bisecting the plain. Then I entombed myself under the bay to let my world grow on its own. I imagine Smiley Face Mountain will be the sight of many bloody battles in the future.

Pffft... Minecraft may be a knock-off, but it has more going for it than the original.

It sounds like you could do something like setup a CoG server where people can go around building stuff all over the world. That actually sounds pretty cool.

I was playing with a server this morning, I have no idea if it's accessible or how well it'll hold up, but feel free to try it (http://minecraft.net/play.jsp?server=b543de72f3a6f2f6603b32ff2531437e).

It's a completely basic and unmodded server, and random people probably won't find it since it's not set to public and won't show up on the list on his site. I started building a fairly huge castle, feel free to add to it or to ignore it entirely.

Huh, you sure it's not just generating a single-player world? I know for fact no one else has made it through to mine yet. I've changed a couple router settings though, so it might be possible now.

Edit: This is what's currently in the middle of my map.

This is pretty addictive once you start building. It's exactly the same feeling as in love but love is just far more complex, just seeing what people have managed so far shows how awesome a few simple tools can be :)

I've built the start of a tunnel system. You can get in to it from the evil eye or the bridge. Please lock glass doors behind you :P and if you are going to add to it keep your finished sections blocked off too... risk of flooding... there's a big hub room under the giant smiley likely with a big red T entrance too.

I also set up the starts of a compass by the spawn

Yup. The screenshots you guys are posting are awesome, and exactly what happens every time an active forum gets their paws on something like this. I remember fondly a similar thread when I was in college about some multiplayer Lego-esque game (Brickland? Brickworld? Something like that? I don't remember. Anyone have any building tips? I find it tricky to build out a pathway over empty air under your feet. I have to scoot up over the edge, look down, and build on the narrow view I have of the block I'm standing on. Is there a better way?

It's a simple one, but if you look down, hold the right mouse button, and repeatedly jump you'll build a stack of blocks and go ever higher. Easy to break down, too.

Grab the custom client here: http://www.worldofminecraft.com/Minecraft_Downloads

And you get the ability to fly. (Z is on/off, and Q/E is up/down.) Also Ctrl is "fast," and Shift "damn-fast."

I can't stay on the server longer than three minutes; the lag is too much and it constantly boots me for cheating (even using the traditional web client.)

I didn't even know there was such a wealth of stuff to mess around with. The map editor looks awesome, for creating specific maps to mess around in.

Now, you can buy this...what exactly does that get you? And gotta admit, this thing is expensive at what comes to 20 US (and that's 50% off!). Anyone mess with any of that extra stuff at all yet?

EDIT: Was gonna give love a try, but there isn't even a demo, and it costs 20 bucks as well.

Hotcod
03-25-2010, 09:42 AM
ya as a silly tool to mess around with some freinds it seems awesome but as the game (from the single player stuff I've done) i'm unconviced and when love is doing 10 erous for 30 days of play... i don't know... love just seems like it's the better 'game' option of the two for now and from what I can see going on here. This is awesome as an easy and relatively permanent game/class arts project. I'm loving it for that.

edit:

this is the last time I'll talk about love here, i don't want to seem like i'm shilling but there's really no getting past the comparison. I'm likely going to jump on the love "retail" in the next few weeks so i'll start a thread to gush about it when i do :P

Actually, Minecraft is $13 with the conversion. Not cheap, but not bad considering it's a pretty open ended game with apparently pretty solid server support.

Edit: Damn Canadians, screwing up my maths.

Hawkzombie
03-25-2010, 10:16 AM
See, that's what turned me off to Love. If it was 10 bucks to play, ok sure. But it's 10 Euros which turns into about 20 bucks for me, for just 30 days? No thanks. If I wanna throw away money like that I'll go back to an MMO.

This...This I'd easily pay 15 bucks for right off the bat. 20 is pushing it, but I'm having a ton of fun, and it looks like you can get different skins for it, and even editors that add new blocks, etc.

Now, you can buy this...what exactly does that get you? And gotta admit, this thing is expensive at what comes to 20 US (and that's 50% off!). Anyone mess with any of that extra stuff at all yet?Purchasing it gets you two more game modes, only one of which is worthwhile. You get "survivor" mode, which is like the single player test, but with more gameplay mechanics. With the materials you mine you can build things (tree blocks -> 4 wood blocks -> 8 planks.) For a list of things:
http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Crafting

It starts like the single player test, and has a day/night cycle. During the night enemies appear from tiles that have no light on them (even inside your home,) so always be sure to keep your home well-lit! Personally, when morning comes I check my traps and it's back to mining and farming. You can save your game (to a file; online saving doesn't work yet,) and reload so you can continue any time. It's not "omg," but it's fun, and I found it worth supporting by tossing him the $13.
EDIT: Was gonna give love a try, but there isn't even a demo, and it costs 20 bucks as well.Maybe not of the gameplay proper, but c'mon; he's giving away the part most people would pay for, in multiplayer-creative. And soon he's going to offer purchasers "multiplayer survivor," which should prove to be awesome. (Fingers crossed.)This game is oddly relaxing. It's like a virtual zen garden.

Oh, and it's not up today for whatever reason, but there is a really awesome looking "Dwarf Fortress" server I recommend; it was named just that last it was up. Guy named HomeWorld runs it; good stuff.

I spent some time on lunch digging a secret tunnel from my hobbit house basement to the central tunnel hub. It was tougher than I thought as I had to keep digging to the surface to make sure I was heading in the right direction, and I ran into an underground lake I had to dig under, but by segmenting my progress as suggested I kept the whole place from being flooded.

Just when I was going to dig up to the surface to locate my destination again, I dug right through the stairs in the main hub room. I hope no one minds. The stairs are still usable, but there's a tunnel entrance in the middle of them now.

Ya I thought a marker for it would be useful. Talking of which there's now a 4th tunnel in to the hub :D there's something cool about going down to the basement of one of the land marks and trying to build a tunnel to the hub with out flooding and making it hard to get through.

Also I've extended the walls some what, I think I'll finish them up by building the wall by the gnome out to the sea and stick a tower on it or something. That way you've got the city walls and then the main castle bit too. I'm going to clean out and level the inside of where I think the castle should be and start work on some buildings and such. There's a half finished wall running up from the harbour along the cost line which could be connected up to the tower at the end of the wall too.

So ya, i've been calling the area with the gnome, rocket and balloon cog city and the lumpy bit full of trees (for now) as cog castle. Which is a bit silly given all the house and home like things are on the other side of the wall but ah well

I connected the wall going from the one tower to another tower near the harbor. It's pretty much finished with just some tidying up left to do. Later I'm going to build another tower near the gnome that connects that side of the wall. The harbor could be expanded too which I may get around to after I finish the walls.

There's some colored blocks set up between the gnome and Mega Man. Is someone building something there or is it alright if I demolish that and expand that harbor some more? I built another dock there already if someone wants to build another small ship.
It's a signature. It's an image trick though, you have to look at it from the right angle. Very clever.

I stole the lava tunnel idea and made a lava tunnel you can walk through :D just go to the castle front door then jump off and you should land in it if hem hasn't flooded it. He managed to start building a lava room right down in to the root of my tunnel as i was making it, which was funny.

But mostly I've had oddly good luck with placing thing tonight. I get the castle perfect hight with out trying, i go for an underground wander and find me self digging up in to my castle. I then dig down and find out I can make a straight shot to the hub room :D

If something is flooded, use sponges to soak it back up again (Yellow block with black spots). Oh, and Sand can be used to artificially raise the water level it seems. Gonna test it out. EDIT: Nope, nevermind.

I built the beginnings of a skyway, between the helix tower and the glass tower. Mostly I was just finishing what the helix tower person started (sorry forgot who it was), but I thought it might be cool to have glass path connecting some of these otherwise hard or impossible to reach aerial constructions.

However, in trying to reach the mysterious glass house in the SE corner of the map, I came to realizations:

1) some people may not want theirs connected. The builder of that glass house, for instance concealed the entrance so well I got lost trying to find my way out of it. ;)

2) Since the initial leg is already so high up, it would be much easier in many cases to build a stair up to the skyway, than down. Impossible in some cases.

So given these, I'll leave it up to individual builders if they'd like to connect. A more central hub might be a good idea too, perhaps built up from the tunnel hub?

Also, if you do build into it, try to use only glass. It makes for a prettier view, and prevents it from blocking out sunlight from the plants and grass below.

Sponges are awesome. In a 2x2 hallway, put a sponge behind a block on each side and it will stop flooding without you even knowing it's there. We could probably do away with most of the glass blockers this way. Unfortunately, it doesn't work with lava.

Some folks have been naughty.

The glass lava tunnel under the hub is completely flooded now and seems to be missing walls in several places, though it's hard to tell through all the red.

Also, there's some weird ass new tunnels just randomly carved all over near the south side of the castle wall, just meandering tunnels going everywhere cutting into other tunnels and caves, and all in hideous random colors.

Hotcod

Is the server public, beyond just the link in this thread? My roommate was playing about with it to day, and reading stuff, and it seems griefing and vandalism are rife with this game.

Is it possible to password the server? At least then we can be sure it wasn't some random jackass just fucking shit up.

Hotcod
03-29-2010, 02:45 AM
Well i fixed it, it took me all of 10 minutes when i didn't even know where the leak was. It seems like some one was trying to expand or change up the big lava room and messed up. Not only did they no think to block off the area they where messing around with they just left it messed up. I don't think any of us care if some one was trying to do something and they make a mistake so long as you do your best to fix it and don't just leave it a mess.

But ya I'd not put anything like the time we have done in to a server that was on the public list. Some kind of password that we give out over PM might me useful since a search from mine craft servers would likely bring this page up at some point if some one was looking for servers to mess around on.

Hawkzombie
03-29-2010, 03:52 AM
Well, I know ours is private, so the only people who would go there are the ones who use the link.

Also, MOST of the griefing happens on the public servers that block people from freely going about their business building, or require a PayPal donation (aside from buying the game) to go out into their server. It's ridiculous.

Dunno what happened with other things, but my guess is we're starting to build into one another now, and mistakes might start to happen.

Hotcod
03-29-2010, 04:32 AM
If you take some time getting to know what's around the area that you are going to build you'll have a good idea of what not to do. I've messed up some ones work by mistake before and you know what I did when I realised it? I fixed the damn thing.

Problem with anything related to lava is once you're in it you can't see anything. I'm usually disoriented about 10 seconds after I see the first magma tile.

Ink Asylum
03-29-2010, 08:44 AM
It's a shame to hear that people's exploring and creating are starting to get entangled. It was kind of inevitable, especially as more people join the server. I know one of the first things I did was just start randomly digging down into the earth, finding the natural caves accidentally. Now someone doing that is bound to burrow into someone else's construction. No excuse for just leaving it like that without repair or, at the very least, explaining what happened in this thread.

BrassGecko
03-29-2010, 08:45 AM
Yeah, I couldn't find a way to password the server, possibly one of the server mods allows it. I did make it non-public, so it's not linked from that list on the main minecraft site.

The "random" tunnels that connect up those caves are arphahat's labyrinth, I believe, and the clashing colors would be courtesy of his kid. :p

Edit: yeah, as to the floods.. be careful when you're digging! Everyone should just drop sponges when they're digging a new tunnel, and stick glass walls up behind themselves to avoid lava floods.

There's also the question.. when do we stop building on this map? At what point do we decide there's no room left and start over fresh?

Arphahat
03-29-2010, 11:00 AM
I'm responsible for a lot of the tunnels. I've been working on a labyrinth that has several locations as exits. However, I've been careful about limiting floods to only the new sections I'm working on with liberal use of sponges into the rest of the areas, so I don't think I am responsible for the complaints about that.

If you found an underground section that has lots of pink, purple, red and green, that was when I was playing with my daughter and I was letting her build stuff, but not destroying things, so I thought it was out of the way and not affecting anyone.

J Arcane
03-29-2010, 11:06 AM
No worries, I just thought it seemed sort of random and worried someone might be doin' some weird shit, so I brought it to folk's attention.

The only personal effect anyone's had on the stuff I've built is antonb's Mudkip was like one tile height away from flooding my tunnel into the hub. ;)

Ink Asylum
03-29-2010, 11:07 AM
So what's the mechanic of the sponge? I haven't experimented with them yet. And is the only reliable way to get rid of lava to flood the area with water first?

We'll be done building when we run out of room. :) There's still a good chunk of above-ground space left for new projects, though it is running out. There's not much behind the castle walls yet. I found a nice big spot there to begin building my world tree, and there's still lots of room for other structures.

J Arcane

The sponge essentially creates a 5-block cube with it at it's center, that water cannot exist in. It's less a sponge and more like some kind of water baleeting field. But as long as you plug up wherever the leak is coming from, any water it deletes will stay gone.

Ah. That's odd behavior but definitely useful. So you could plug the leak, drop a bunch ten blocks away from each other, then once every square of water is sponged away delete the sponges and the room will be dry?

Ah. That's odd behavior but definitely useful. So you could plug the leak, drop a bunch ten blocks away from each other, then once every square of water is sponged away delete the sponges and the room will be dry?

Exactly right. Much easier than the old square by square method we'd been doing.
I finally tried the in-development survival mode, with the crafting and all.. and yeah, that would be AWESOME multiplayer.
Honestly, I think multiplayer is the only way survival mode will be playable. And the additional depth could definitely benefit the longevity of a server.

Since the discovery of sponges, they have been quickly showing up all over the map. Check the hub for example.

We'll be done building when we run out of room. http://67.227.189.160/%7Ecolonyof/cogforums/images/smilies/smile.gif There's still a good chunk of above-ground space left for new projects, though it is running out. There's not much behind the castle walls yet. I found a nice big spot there to begin building my world tree, and there's still lots of room for other structures.
Ya, there's still plenty of above ground area on the other side of the wall. If you're going to be digging underground around the world tree and hot air balloon be careful since I've been playing with water and lava in that area.

I was reading the wiki and it said that sponges can absorb water even through other blocks, so you can hide them, for example, as the outside corners of a cube room and it will be waterproof while the sponges remain unseen.

It does seem to take slightly longer to load now, but at least part of it's just that it takes up a fair chunk more memory than it used to. It's also possible that variations in my internet mess with peoples' connections sometimes. Other than that, as far as I can tell, it's running about the same as it has been.

For any sort of larger map, I think someone else is going to have to be the host. This current map isn't terribly taxing and I could support bigger.. except that as I've said before, the computer that it's on DOES have other things to do. This one doesn't interfere with that, a larger one would begin to give me issues. Anyone have a computer with nothing better to do?

Hemalin

Just as long as there isn't a great wall next time. That seemed to unnecessarily segregate the landscape.

What sort of options are there for a larger map? Do you have fully control over the Height, depth and land area or are there only preset sizes?

Sorry if I worded that badly, it'll run on any pc. The link to the software is right above the server list: http://minecraft.net/servers.jsp

BEHOLD! The Island of Doctor Hawk.

http://i778.photobucket.com/albums/yy66/Hawkzombie/Minecraft/1.png
http://i778.photobucket.com/albums/yy66/Hawkzombie/Minecraft/2.png

I've tried playing this several times before, and each time I die before I can really get anywhere. I love the look of the floating, but getting resources is a bitch as they generally aren't tall enough to hold many important resources (such as coal and iron). I've also discovered that the different 'themes' are also a means of difficulty. Paradise = no monster spawns and a more 'tropical' theme (more sand, flowers, etc), Normal = regular monster spawns (at night or in pitch black caves), and a regular looking theme, Hell = far harder, no water (all replaced with lava, might have water underground however) and monsters spawn any time day or night.

Anyway, I finally settled on an island instead of floating, and am having a ton of fun with it.

http://i778.photobucket.com/albums/yy66/Hawkzombie/Minecraft/3.png

Right next to my spawn point and 'house' I found a small cave area with a good access to coal and a little iron, which was really awesome. However, the deeper I got, I heard footsteps, and found out just one block away was a small group of zombies. After killing them I explored the cave in full. It was MASSIVE with 4 'chambers' so far.

http://i778.photobucket.com/albums/yy66/Hawkzombie/Minecraft/5.png

I've walled up some sections I've yet to explore and light (to keep monsters from spawning under my nose) and I'm trying an experiment. The only entrance to my cave is now underwater so i don't have to constantly wall it up for the night whenever I head into my sanctuary. I've also funneled water from the exterior inward to hydrate my farm.

http://i778.photobucket.com/albums/yy66/Hawkzombie/Minecraft/4.png
http://i778.photobucket.com/albums/yy66/Hawkzombie/Minecraft/6.png

You can 'smelt' glass blocks using a furnace and sand, so I've been able to make a sort of underground cove area to harvest wheat.

http://i778.photobucket.com/albums/yy66/Hawkzombie/Minecraft/7.png

Yes, that's a tree. Apparently if they have enough light (even torches) trees can flourish underground. My next plan is to explore further (I believe I found a lake of lava under my main room) and channel water throughout the area. I think the idea of skylights is also a perfect way to keep it well lit, as in future developments torches will have a finite burn time.

Man, this game is awesome.

Once I've got enough experience in Normal, I plan on doing the same with a Hell difficulty.

I bought a subscription. :)

Getting started is tough, especially surviving your first night. I've died a couple times already. My plan now is to harvest as much wood and cloth as possible before the first night falls. If I see some ore I'll make an attempt to get it but it's not a priority.

Then I board myself in and start making wooden tools and cloth armor. I also dig up my floor to make a stone sword. I dug a hole outside so I hope some of the enemies will fall in before morning. I can hear them walking around out there....

Fighting is tough and I hope to kill a couple spiders tomorrow morning to make a bow and some skellies for arrows, which should make it a bit less dangerous. Then I'll try to find a cave I can start to use as a base once I have the materials to make torches.

BrassGecko
04-04-2010, 02:55 PM
Remember that you can trim some wood planks off each edge of that starting shed it gives you. Along with that stone floor, it's an extra-nice starting boost. I generally just wall up the entrance for the first night or two until I have a two-high wall around the whole place. Then I spend the nights digging down below the starting shack or adding to that wall, and the daytime out looking for coal, metals, and spots for fancier construction.

Okay, you guys are making this game sound even more awesome. I've only messed around on the COG server, so a lot of what Ink, Brass, and Hawk are talking about is a little confusing. What's all this about monsters and resource gathering? Is the single player vastly different from the multiplayer/COG server? What's the deal with farming?

Ink Asylum
04-04-2010, 03:25 PM
We're talking about Survival mode, which currently is only single player. Unlike in Creative, you have finite resources to build. For example, if you want to build a wooden wall you need to cut down trees, which you can do by hand but faster if you craft an axe, using a workbench you also create from wood, etc.

Enemies spawn at night either outside or wherever it is dark inside. You place torches on walls to create a safe home for yourself at night. In the morning you fight off the enemies that are still alive (skeletons, for example, die in sunlight), then go collect resources.

That sounds great Ink! What happens if you die, and what's the point of farming? Can you grow crops or something?

I think I'm going to pick this up, despite my "don't buy anything" rule.

Hawkzombie
04-04-2010, 04:58 PM
Ok, here's my run down to help people with any questions:

Don't select a save slot within the game Always choose Save File. I went for a while thinking the save slots were working, but when I went to load they were gone. Saving the file allows you to load it whenever you want. It defaults to a temp folder for the game, but I generally keep backups of my days events in another folder just in case windows does something stupid and clears it.

Farming works pretty nicely. I basically get water to dirt blocks, and craft a hoe (there's a wonderful link to crafting (http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Crafting) in the wiki). I usually don't waste iron on those as I've got more than enough stone after my cave building. Now, with the freshly 'tilled' dirt block, you want to get it hydrated. You need a water tile within 4 blocks (diagonally included) of the tilled tile. It will then become dark, and thus hydrated. Now, to get seeds to plant for the first time, go and till grass. Any grass, anywhere. It's random and you'll get 0-3 seeds each time. Now, using the seeds, right click the hydrated tilled block and simply wait. They need sunlight. After a day or two of minecraft time, the grass they grow will become golden, and ready to harvest. Left click it with any tool and it'll produce wheat and 0-3 seeds.

You make bread by using the workbench and crafting 3 wheat together in a straight row.

If you haven't saved, you lose everything when you die. There's no respawning or anything (yet...might only be for infdev) so you need to save often. I've had monsters still sneak into my lair from areas I haven't lit up properly and scare the shit out of me. Also, oddly enough, animals (pigs and sheep) spawn from sunlit areas, so the damn things have been spawning on my crops underground :p

Infdev is the new mode the creator has made that basically creates a world that is infinite in theory. Which ever direction you go in, it creates more world randomly. Currently, there are no monsters, but if you die you can choose to respawn or load a save, and you drop everything you were carrying when you die, so you can go and pick it back up again.

The first few nights are the roughest. Go out, scout a location near where you are, and DIG. You want to find coal and iron as soon as possible. I got super lucky with my first dig site ALSO opening to that awesome cave system. But my goal was to excavate a huge chunk of land, and then build a defensible position somewhere more inland. However, my water trick is working beautifully. See, monsters can't swim, and if you're near them (even if you're underground and they're topside) they move towards where you are. So if I walk towards my cave entrance, I can hear them bobbing in the water.

Anyway, once it starts to get dark, go back to your house, and wall up the door with dirt. Anything that will keep the badguys out and get to crafting. I usually give myself a sun roof to see when day breaks and it's safer to go out to continue digging. Once I sealed off my cave, I gave up on the house, and use it as a marker for the entrance now (you can easily get lost if you don't pay attention or leave markers for yourself)

BUILD CHESTS. Seriously. Spare 16 wood and build two next to each other for the big chest, and store everything in them until you get a handle on things. You never know when you might want something, even for aesthetic value.

Harvest cloth from sheep, and build armor. It helps a LOT, and as far as I know, the durability is the same no matter what material it is crafted from, and sheep wool is the easiest to find. I could be wrong though. But for a while I had a gold helm, iron boots and chestplate, and brown pants. I simply liked the look.

Make a sword, even if it's out of stone. It helps a lot as well to kill things, but keep in mind durability: All tools have it, and it depends on the material. Wood and gold are the softest and weakest, so they only last about 32 uses. Stone doubles that. Iron doubles stone, and Diamond doubles Iron.

I think that should be enough for people to get started...

Oh! The painting I made is random, and created by making the chest shape with the wood blocks, and a piece of cloth. It's random when placing, so if you get one you don't like, 'mine it' to drop it and replace it.

When you go to save, ignore all those save slots and click Save to File down at the bottom. It took me like 3 deaths and new world starts to notice that!

Really neat interview with Notch, with some info on when it's going to be headed into Beta (looks like this summer or earlier)

One thing I like at the 4:15 point is the question of where he sees the game in 2 years. Notch basically says as long as people like it, he'll keep working on it. It seems like if he gets a lot of feedback on stuff, he'll implement things.

it's morning and I have a moat full of monsters, which is rather amusing/annoying hehe I think I dug it a little to close so next time bigger and deeper so if they fall in they go way down. I've also got a mine shaft in my house that has come out in a big cave system with lava. So plan now is to deepend the moat and build a inner wall and then lay the ground work for a second moat and wall around a larger section of land so I can farm and build a dedicated mine shaft building and the like... gah addicting!

NOOOoooo! Don't do it, man! Think of all the other games you....

Yeah, I'm buying it, too. ;)

It's more than five dollars though! :p

So if I buy the indev will I get access to the full version when it hits as well?

So when are we going to get a fresh server? Seems like everyone's interest has sort of died off now that the server's basically packed full, there's never anyone on when I play. Or is everyone just playing survival mode?

now i have the indev i've been playing survival mostly, there just don't seem much left to do with out map... something new with new big projects would be good

I bought it! I'm going to try survival mode out, but I would love to see a new COG server as well. The old one is great!

I can put up a new server at any time. If I just have it generate a map, it'll be the same size as this one. If we want anything bigger or fancier I'll take a look at the map editors that are out there. I know we've got a couple people who will have issues running it if we make it too huge, so keep that in mind as well.

So, what do we want?

I'm now setting an arbitrary cutoff for 8pm EST. If you've got anything else you want to build on the old server or projects that need finishing, get them done before then (or let me know and I'll wait, it's not a super serious cutoff). At that point, I'll take the server down and post a link for anyone who wants to download a copy of the map, and we can start fresh.

I think a lot of us are playing Survival mode at the moment, myself included.

I built a second house up on the highest hill on my map. From there I'm pretty safe from any monsters, as they can't climb up to the peak. It's a bitch to kill them in the morning, though.

I plan to try burrowing into the floor of that house during the night. I have a lot of torches so I should be able to light as I mine out minerals and eventually a large central base.

I found an editor that seems easy enough to use.

If we want a larger or more customized world, that's what we've got to play with.

That looks like a simple editor. I'm going to play survival mode, but I'm also up for having another COG server that we can all contribute to.

I think the main thing we need is a bigger sky limit, i'd like a bigger map over all but the save size but taller would work :)

Yeah, definitely need the height :p

And sadly hotcod: Monsters float. So no matter how deep it goes, they'll always tread along the top. It's great if you have an underwater entrance like I do, but terrible if you don't :p

Honestly, I found ANOTHER large cave system UNDER my existing one, and actually found diamonds (best for making tools) over a bed of lava which was sitting under a lake. Kinda a cool effect and I'll take a picture soon. I spent a good amount of time digging and lighting the place up....but forgot to save, and somehow a bomb guy got in and blew me up as I was heading back up the stairs to my main chamber. Guess there wasn't enough light.
