Intelligent Dance Music. It's an odd name, becuase if you tried to dance to it you'd probably look like you were having some kind of seizure. It can be an aquired taste, but it's really great once you get into it.

Think Aphex Twin.

IDM stands for Intellectual Dance Music ... and you don't dance to it. To give an example: Aphex Twin could be classified as idm, but his stuff is so incredibly varied that depending on what you listen to from his catalog, it could fall under a whole other subgenre under the electronic umbrella.

I don't know where the name came from. I think it was from a magazine somewhere in Europe a long time ago.
