My new computer is able to run Far Cry 2 maxed out. I'll check how it likes Crysis (later). I'll post some screenshots on the weekend, after I buy a better monitor. Far Cry 2 looks amazing for an open world, sandbox game.

Just took a couple of shots while playing Dead Space, man that game is awesome! and it runs smoothly aswell, after trying crysis i never thought i would get to play any games at maxed, but along came FarCry2 and Deadspace to save me :P

Haven't really noticed anything.

It's playing great for me, i haven't really have had any issues with this game at all. Although i'm thinking of trying to play it with my 360 pad to see if it's better or worse.

the mouse thing is the only real complaint i have about the game so far... the only thing i can think of is that it's meant to make it as 'hard' to aim as with the game pad because it would be much easier with out the drag on the mouse and they have clearly balanced the game around the limits of the analogue stick

I think this game uses a single (but very detailed) unified lighting method... there's colour correction for every different environment/light which makes it look so varied and colourful.

I have a weird issue with my Fallout 3 screen shots...that scale down the right...I had a great outdoor shot that was ruined due to that...must be the resolution. Unfortunately, the 6mb bmp file had to be downgraded to a 207kb jpg, so there is a little loss in clarity. It is a nice looking game though :)

I love it. I never liked the others. But I decided I was going to give myself 1-2 hours just to get use to it. And man its hours well spent.

It's a space trader primarily. It has a lot of flying between systems, fighting pirates, buying and selling of goods and ships, and an overall storyline about an invading race of sentient machines. The X series is very epic in scope. You can start out owning one jalopy and eventually own a fleet of starships that you manage with individual missions and fly out of your system base.

It has multiple starting choices that have their own primary mission trees. For example, that shot is from the "fighter jock" storyline. There a few others that are concerned primarily with fighting, but most of them are the typical "Elite" or "Privateer" type starting choices that just mix up the origin point and have different factions mad at you.

It's defitnitely not for the faint of heart. It's gorgeous and deep, but very newbie unfriendly. There's a huge learning curve. Imagine EVE, but with pseudo-physics space flight and no one to ask for help.

I can tell you right now that if you're unsure about whether or not you'll like X3, then don't get it. It's definitely an "acquired taste" type of game. Envy my screenies all you want, but don't drop the money unless you're already sold on the game concept which is basically flying around to see the pretty vistas and then docking at stations to read spreadsheets.

I've had way too many buddies get all pissed at me because I recommended the X3 games to them. (I like them because they really do remind me of an uber-complicated Elite or Privateer with greatly amped visuals, but it is an acquired taste as I said.) In the past, I used to go on and on about how awesome the games were, only to have friends call me up and bitch me out for influencing them to buy such a godawful unfriendly and boring game.

What do I know? I still play IL-2 and think it's the best combat flight sim ever made. Most people would rather stab their own eyes out than play a hardcore flight sim.

I love vast space games, but mostly for the exploration aspects. I can't handle overly complex economics simulators or managing galaxy-spanning empires and fleets. I just want to point a ship at some uncharted section of space and bounce around between planets, meeting alien races, discovering wonders, occasionally duking it out with some pirates, etc.

Star Control II remains one of my favorite games ever for exactly those reasons.

Ever played Starflight? That was a pretty neat game (was for the Genesis).
PC platforms first actually. The genesis version was a port. There's also a sequel. When I still had a classic Mac I used to poke aroudn with the Mac versions every now and then, though I never got too far.

PC platforms first actually. The genesis version was a port. There's also a sequel. When I still had a classic Mac I used to poke aroudn with the Mac versions every now and then, though I never got too far.

Still a good game ;)

I run into a lot of those issues with games at that time because I still had a C64, so consoles were my only source of "new" games.

I was looking at screenshots of it the other day and it brings back a lot of memories...'

the xbox textures are set to the pc "medium" setting i believe... i had to compromise a bit to save my poor card and drop down the textures to medium from high and there is a real difference

Ah great shots! I enjoyed the PC version of RE4. As did I enjoy the GC version and PS2 version, but the PC version has the most crisp graphics.

I don't know what it is but walking in and looking up and seeing that was really rather wonderful. I love the ME ascetic to death, it has it's problems as game but in terms of it's visual design it's easily one of the best, if not the best, i've every played.

Looks like the part where you're in a large atrium-type area, with two under-construction towers you have to climb your way up - occasionally wall-running between them - to get to a vent.

That is a beautiful shot though.

yup, getting towards the end of the game i feel. I've not really dug in to the time trails yet, only did the first one and it drives me crazy. I know i can do it in a 3 star time, since i can do each bit in the time that i'd need i just can't do each bit right all at the same time. It's going to get addicting. I'm very tempted to start trying to make levels for it but i've got to much to do with the fallout 3 mod i'm planing

I actually made it back, though with one engine shut down because I was worried about a fuel leak igniting. Both german fighters went down with their engines shot out.

It's a pretty game, even with all of those jagged edges, and it's nice to finally be halfway decent at flying in it.

How does DemiGod play?

Very smoothly. It's built on a heavily optimized SupCom engine which lets it scale very well since there's nowhere near the real estate size or number of units rendered in a Demigod match as SupCom had.

I hesitate to call it a DotA-like since that really doesn't describe the way the design has evolved. Basically, it's DotA with less micro, more RPG elements, and a tournament structure.

Brad Wardell described it as being similar to a boss fight in Diablo 2, but for the duration of a match. That actually seems pretty accurate at this point.

It's a console port of a UE game. So, the only videos settings there is a radio box for "Low detail mode".

I used Tagashi's treasure is probably the best. But if you can get Next Generation play it. Its hard to get sometimes, but if you can get your hands on it enjoy.
I personally LOVE Tagashi's Treasure. It has so many hundreds of hidden things and amazing ships.
Looking them both up at Moddb will get you started. Takes about 15 minutes to download and you are good to go.

It may be. There are so many ships in it that it's hard to track. But I spent most of this last weekend mining and then fighting off pirates for a grand total of 1,234,211 credit.
And I have another 7,000,000 to get a Star Destroyer.
I am stoked.

Probably spun out. I've discovered that, at least on the PS3 version, it seems heel-toe with foot never leaving the gas, just applying brake to slow, is the only way to get some cars to go around corners without automatically spinning out.

Just to be clear. I wasn't driving the wrong direction :) Was turning out of a corner and fell into a line that took me directly into a dark cloud of smoke that happened to be concealing another car that was in the process of spinning out. This is not an uncommon occurrence, but I've never nailed a car head on like that. Was pretty amazed at the result.

Dangit, now I'm starting to play Grid. I noticed Gametap has it, so I downloaded it and I've been playing since...can be a difficult game if you're like me and want to get all the bonus objectives...restart...restart...restart :)

I played grid alot a while ago, but man does the 360 steeringwheel take some getting used to! When i switched to it from the controller it was a whole nother experience!

There are subtitles in X3, you just can't enable them until you get in-game. Start a new game, skip the opening cinematic when you can, then enable them in the options menu...restart.

They aren't the best subtitles, but you can see them again in the mission briefings. I rarely play with in-game sound, so I enjoy games that have subtitles.

Freelancer...no subtitles that I know of.

Freelancer has subtitles for the main cutscene. However, I don't think I remember it having them during a mission or when you scan other ships. I will check.

Sometimes I really miss Eve.

Then I remember the mining ops to gain money, as I had no real way to gain money fast enough to replace the ships I'd lose in battle... as well as the 2-3 hour waits durng a gatecamp...

Then again, those times in a small force trying to fly behind enemy lines and avoid gatecamps were some of the most tense and exciting video game moments I've ever had. Oh Eve how I hate thee.

Most definitely, it does. The damage models for the zombies are fantastic. A zombie walked past me and got taken out by one of my AI partners and I watched as it took a gut shot and kept walking whilst it's intestines unfurled and trailed behind them until emptying out and leaving a gaping hole. It was quite awesome.

Sigh... done. There were some bugs that prevented settings from applying for some reason, anyway... after two hours of messing around I've got the settings to work.

All screens have R_displayinfo set to 1 so that the awesome frame rates are viewable.
I'm running an aging Core 2 Duo E6750 (2.6ghz) with 2GB of DDR2 RAM. So I think its agreeable that given the specs and settings, these frame rates are pretty damn good for DX10 rendering mode.

There's some weird tradeoffs you have to make with the engine, for example... the brighter you want the HDR/adaptation effects to be, the lower your SSAO settings need to be in order to maintain playable visibility. Its taken me many days to find a proper balance between such tradeoffs and I'm pretty happy with the end result.

Shadow resolution/filtering tweak (this one was done in DX9, actually... but I was later able to replicate the IQ in DX10 as well, so its pretty much the same) Default DX10 shadows looked like a flickering mess:

Bought Crysis on the recent steam sales. My god, the game is like, what? 2 years old now? And it STILL looks as good or better than 99% of what's on the market (at least in terms of technology). They really were ahead of their time. Shame it brings my computer down to it's knees.

#1: You'll find yourself enjoying the gameplay more on a capable rig.
#2: Warhead looks and runs better, if you will believe it.

The screens I have posted are from Warhead, by the way. And uber fuckup on my part, I had some of the texture settings set below maximum accidentally when taking the screenshots. What I'm running right now actually looks better than this.

I actually plan to do an upgrade at some point this year. The biggest problem I'm having is deciding just how far I'm going to go on my new machine. Just about every new computer I build I do it for around $750, but every time I keep speccing out one for this year it's coming in around $1200, and that's driving me nuts.

I do at least have Crysis running around 25fps with settings either medium or high (and a couple of very high). Just not at 1080p like I'd prefer =P
Running through the jungle spraying lead, knocking down trees, and seeing the "god rays" from the sun shift and sway with the falling leaves is awesome. =)

Looks good H Bogey, but why not just stick to the CCC tweak that the guys over at incrysis.com have? I'm not sure I really see anything in your screens that looks better.

I think I'll try those out, wack. Just bought Crysis and Warhead in the Steam sale, but have not booted them yet. Time to push this new rig. :)

Because those Tweaks are what I started off with and it does look better, since I have made side-by-side comparisons. Those configs do actually sacrifice a lot of IQ for the lower-to-medium end audience.
