View Full Version : Unofficial CoG Desktop and Phone Wallpapers
Doctor Setebos
10-23-2008, 02:36 PM
I was itching to have a CoG desktop wallpaper and, oddly enough, a CoG background for my phone, and so I decided to take matters into my own hands and create them myself with my meager graphic design skills.
These are completely unofficial images, not sanctioned by any member of the CoG foundership, and I apologize in advance if making and posting these steps on anyone's toes. I know that Mike likely has official CoG wallpapers on his to-do list, and when they're available, I have no doubt in my mind that they will absolutely be at least 10x greater in quality and craftsmanship than anything I could haphazardly hobble together. In the meantime, we have these. Feel free to download at will.
I will take orders on different sizes for the phone background - I designed the initial one based on my own phone's dimensions. Just PM me (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/private.php?do=newpm&u=233) with your phone make and model, and I'll resize to fit and post it here in case anyone has the same phone. If I get the time, I'll also make a 1600w wallpaper, as well, I just haven't done it yet.
Comments are welcome! But please don't ask me to make minor -- or even major -- tweaks to the existing designs, just because you don't like how something looks. If you don't like it, I'll send you the original file, you can tweak it to your liking. These come as is, with only dimension alterations to be considered.
Enjoy!
UPDATE: There's too many creations and variations to keep updating here, so I'm just going to post a LINK TO THE WALLPAPERS PAGE (http://fileflood.googlepages.com/cog-walls.html), where you can find all of the designs, along with links to every available dimension alternative we create. Here's some quick thumbnails of what designs have become available (I can only add 4 images to a post, so as the selection grows, these might rotate to give everyone an idea of what's available).

I'd like a widescreen one. I run at 1360x768.
Also if you want to try some different color schemes I'm sure it would be appreciated.
I would assume this doesn't step on our Art Directors toes - I don't think being responsible for the direction of something means you are the only person who is allowed to contribute. I guess it would just be up to him whether or not these go on some 'official downloads' page.

I put up a new design in the OP that's a variation on the original called "Non-conformist CoGs". Only a 1280x1024 wallpaper at the moment, if anyone wants a different size/format variant of this, please just let me know.
I'm going to work up some brand new designs soon that aren't just slight alterations of the existing design. I might get one of those posted this weekend.
Enjoy!

You can put your own background on the Xbox 360?
I'm almost positive you can. I remember reading other threads in EvAv how many don't like "buying" themes and such and created their own. I'm guessing this would be similar.
Great stuff Doc! I'm going to use some of them.

Is there somewhere we can get some the sites graphics so that we may make our own backgrounds? I like the ones I see here, but I prefer a wallpaper with less detail. Maybe something that just has the Cog and the sites name in the bottom corner on all black.
Can I humbly request 1280 x 800 of the "Non-conformist CoGs" design? I managed to resize and crop everything else, but that one'd be a little tricky.

Glad ya like it... I aim to please. :)
The bad news is that I made the starscape natively at 1280x1024, so any resizing is going to either involve resampling the image(stretched pixels... blech), or creative cropping and framing (i.e. Bioshock Widescreening). I'll see what I can do when I've got a few minutes, though. :(
The cog was modeled and rendered in Blender (http://www.blender.org/), the 3D graphics solution of cheapskates, open source enthusiasts and mad-men. ;)

Alright, here's a resized version of the starscape wallpaper for widescreen displays. It's a little less than ideal, but I wasn't crazy about the idea of repainting the stars at a higher resolution.

I've also created a special off-site page for collecting all of the various wallpapers (http://fileflood.googlepages.com/cog-walls.html), as there will likely be more to come in the future, and I can only have a maximum of four images in one single post. This way it's also much easier to see which size dimensions are missing so I can add them at a later date.
Speaking of which, any size alternatives people have requested that I've missed so far? I'd hate to leave someone out.

This. And if your desktop is scaling it poorly, you can just toss it into Photoshop or Gimp or what-have-you and scale the image down. That's all I'd be doing to it.
I'm posting some updated versions that use a different cog model. The widescreen version of this should have slightly better fidelity as well.

Flickr. It's like $50 I think for 2 years unlimited hosting. Of course it only supports JPG, PNG, and unanimated GIFs, file size limit is 20MB per picture, but it suffices for me.

Anyone have any recommendations for hosting images in the 300k-500k range?Flickr isn't bad, but they sometimes randomly crack down on images that aren't true "photos". I use Google Pages for all my random web hosting needs. 100MB of space for free. You can create as many Pages accounts as you want. I have about 10, myself.

On a side note, I'm running out of webspace. Anyone have any recommendations for hosting images in the 300k-500k range?I don't know if it suits your purposes or not, but I'm pretty happy with Photobucket.
The limits (http://photobucket.com/faq?catID=29&catSelected=f&topicID=331) for free accounts (http://photobucket.com/faq?catID=29&catSelected=f&topicID=320) are:
1 GB total storage
25 GB monthly bandwidth limit
1 MB file size limit
There's also the option to use a dimension limit of 1024x768, without the file size limit, but that's pretty small so I stick with the 1 MB limit. I think you can actually switch back & forth between them, so if you have an animated GIF that's >1MB but <1024px, you could change settings, upload it, then change back.
The Pro (paid) accounts bump up to 10GB storage space, 5MB or 2240x1680 image size max, and no bandwidth limit.

My current stats.
Albums can be private (you can direct-link images, but others need a password to browse), or public (anyone can browse). There are ads on the photobucket site, but AdBlock Plus gets rid of most of them.
One thing, looking around the FAQs, I noticed this (http://photobucket.com/faq?catID=29&catSelected=f&topicID=323):Photobucket reserves the right to remove Free accounts that are not accessed at least once every 90 days. It is always a good idea to log into your Photobucket account periodically to ensure that it stays active and that you have your correct account information.Didn't even know they had such a policy...

I've been using Imageshack.us (http://www.Imageshack.us) for the images I host here, and it seems to work well enough. I also have an account with google that has image hosting, but I haven't looked at it much.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys! I ended up going with sites.google (apparently pages.google is being deprecated) since I've already got a login, and well... it's google. ;)

As always when I'm bored, I do stuff that is probably not needed..
I made a photo gallery everyone can use if you wish to upload pics / movies / music / etc.
You can upload images from the web, through zip files, from desktop, etc. Can do all kinds of stuff I'm too lazy to figure out atm, but I uploaded all of Docs wallpaper images just by putting his link into the upload form and it picked them all up.
You can hotlink images and everything still as well.

BTW - do I still have a folder on your evilavatarcomics FTP site? I'd love to get back into that and start using it again, if at all possible. I'll PM you about it.

More updates on our little friend, the astronaut. I ran him through a different renderer, and I'm pretty pleased with the results.
I'm releasing the 16:9 version first, since I completely skipped out on you guys on the last version. 8x6 will be coming soon. You also have a choice between a crisp version, and one with some ham-handed depth-of-field blurring.

edit: And now an old-style film version.

I really dig the different render and the change of placement on the spaceman. One thing I do want to touch on constructively though is the spotlight. Spaceman is in the foreground, more or less 3/4 view facing forward, yet he's shining the light on the cog behind him in the background. Makes for a sore wrist, sort of awkward looking.
What if you could move him a little bit into the background, with the cog being in the foreground? You could leave the positioning the same or similar on the spaceman, and have his torch lighting up the underside of the inside curve on the C. Just a thought, I really like it as it already is. :) Keep up the good work.

Here's the first in my series of console-related CoG wallpaper themes. I call this one: CoG 360.

Any chance at a PS3 CoG theme? Does anyone still have the instructions/files necessary to make a PS3 theme? The EvAv one was cool, and sadly I lost it when I upgraded the hard drive and forgot to back up everything.

Well, for the PS3, it's not just a wallpaper. All the system icons can be replaced, and you can also add sounds. You can also have multiple wallpapers in one theme, and it will cycle through them.

Great job with the wallpapers, guys. I've already saved a few of the 1920x1200 versions!

I think the royal blue was more of a PS2 thing. If I had to color code everything, the 360 would be green, Wii would be blue, and PS3 would be red by default. Honestly, it's probably more of a gray, but I go with red because it just makes sense with the other two colors being green and blue.

Yeah, it's a theme, using the word in the traditional sense. It replaces all the icons, sounds, wallpaper, etc. Icondeveloper is free now, or has a free version, if you wanted to play around and make something Rogue. I can't imagine making little cogs for the icons would be very tough.
Only one problem might come up though. The free version probably has limited choices for file types to use/save. I'm not sure how easy it would be to find something that converts what you get into what the ps3 needs.

Nothing's coming up? Is the link broken? Checked the pagesource and the link takes you to a gallery updater.

The colours are black and white for the PS3, no mistake about it. They're trying to be sleek and sexy (and I approve). Red would be okay because they sometimes brandish the PS logo in red. But, if anything, it would be white like the PS3 logo.

I have a few suggestions for the "Spaceman Approaching CoG" image. I keep have these really epic expectations. I think that image would look incredible if there were far less stars, and if it were a lot darker. The spaceman's flashlight would be just enough to light up the whole CoG. Think "Oh hey, I'm an astronaut! What's this? I've found some sort of foreign object in the vast expanse of space? Cool!"
