View Full Version : Quick Steam question

I'm away from my Steam-capable machine at the moment and I had a quick question.
When the Orange Box first released did it include the complete Half-Life 2 in addition to Episode 1 and 2? And if it did, and you owned HL2 and Ep1 were you able to gift both of them?
I recently got my older brother, who hasn't gamed much since the SNES days back into gaming. First he got into the simple Wii games, then I lent him Phantom Hourglass and he beat it (something I haven't done yet), so I knew he could handle other games. Got him into Portal and he loved it so I'd like to see if he can handle HL2 and if I can do it for free all the better.
Thanks!

Yes. But since a lot of people who bought it already had they game Valve let you "gift" the game to a friend.

HL2 and Ep 1? I know I owned both before I bought the Orange Box. I'm pretty sure I haven't gifted either yet if that's the case, but I won't know for sure until tomorrow.

Yes, you could gift both since they were both included in the Orange Box.

Thanks. I'll have to give him a primer on Half-Life 1, but that shouldn't be too hard.

Amusing, but this one will probably be more helpful.

I still have an HL2 license to gift if anyone needs/wants it.

I ended up with two copies of TF2. I bought it standalone, then later bought the Orange Box. If somebody tells me how to gift the second TF2, I'll gift it to anybody.

Okay, I'll bite. I've been itching to do a little TF2. I believe the Steam Gifts and Guest Passes Management option can be found within the 'Games' tab on the menu bar along the top of the steam window.

So I gifted Half-Life 2 and Ep1 to my brother, and he bought Half-Life Source so he can play the series from the start. He's enjoying it so far, but as someone who hasn't played many video games he finds the default run speed fast and holds down shift a lot to walk instead.
I believe he should be able to bind the Shift key to a walk/run toggle rather than a hold-to-walk, but I'm not certain how he'd do it, as I've always just used in-game settings. Does anyone know of a quick way for him to make that setting in Half-Life Source? He's a computer tech guy so I know he'll understand whatever he has to do.
Thanks!

Why not just have him play through Half-Life instead?

That's what he's decided to do, but I wasn't sure he'd want to. Half-Life is excellent, but if you haven't spent your life playing First Person Shooters it can be a tough first experience. Half-Life 2 is much better designed for amateurs.

Open console (may need to enable it in options > advanced) and type:
bind "shift" "walk_t"
I think...
In l4d these days though my duck toggle is
Bind "key" "toggle duck" so try that with walk instead of duck if the first doesn't work.

How is HL Source btw? Does it feel the same way as HL1 or does it feel more like HL2?

I wouldn't know. I bought the Half-Life complete pack but that doesn't include HL:Source and it's $10 separately.

Half-life Source feels more like Half-Life. It just has a few more visual effects.

Yeah, sorry about that. I didn't finish reading through the thread before posting last night.
As for Half-Life being a tough first time experience, I beg to differ. I wasn't a big fan of first-person shooters in the 90s, and in fact I'm still not all that into them. However, I played Half-Life back when it came out and I loved every minute of it! It was the first FPS that I played from start to finish, and one of the few to this day. The only other FPS series I've ever loved so much is No One Lives Forever.
I have both Half-Life and Half-Life: Source. I should fire them both up sometime and compare. I wouldn't mind playing through Half-Life again, although I really need to finish the HL2 and both episodes first. :o

I recommend that you play through them all. I really enjoyed HL2 and all the episodes that came out thus far.

I know. I'm really ashamed that I haven't finished the series. I beat Half-Life 1 years ago, back in 1998 or so. I've gotten around a third of the way through the second game twice, and then for some reason I've never gone past that point. The dune buggy area is where I've always stopped.

My brother's still plugging through the game so he must like it. He had trouble tonight trying to grab a ladder after a jump, even though he's sure he hit it, but that's about halfway through the game so he's proceeding nicely. I'm eager to hear his thoughts once he's done.
