I found this on Games Radar (http://www.gamesradar.com/f/ubisoft-europeans-are-babies-americans-love-stubble/a-20100308174422215088), originating from NeoGaf (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=19958092#post19958092).

Great quote from NeoGaf:

So the left hand side of the US box is supposed to represent a peaceful economy?

Uhh yeah. Don't you see dude carrying rocks? White European people only carry rocks when they be building some righteous shit. Like cathedrals. Or monasteries.

See to me he looks like a moron who forgot half his armour. Wonder which we're gonna get.

I showed this to a few friends.. they choose the American art. I showed them screenshots then shouted "YOU ARE WHAT IS WRONG WITH GAMING!"

Lol.

I'm guessing the left is the EU box art. I think that represents the game a lot better. Settlers has always been cartoonish and cutesy.

Imagine buying the right box, installing it and getting a settlers game (if you had no idea what one looked like), man you'd be feeling misled.

Also has any good ever come of boxart with overly realistic people on the covers (army games aside)?

Half Life 2 (and episodes)? Phalanx? Saboteur 2?

Also Medieval 2 - though you could argue that's an "army" game, I guess - the figures in Fallout's art, the Hitman games...

Misrepresentation aside, what marketing monkey decided on such a huge disparity?

*Edited for content.

See, normally this would interest me, but so long as Ubisoft keeps their ridiculous DRM in place, I could really care less about any of their games.

I don't count HL2 because that's pretty much ingame. Fallout same thing with regards to cinematics, plus they're in power armour. Medieval 2 is a decent game with a crap realistic cover though, so that's one. Never played those others but Saboteur 2 is obviously a drawing so it's ok.

Yeah, I really just mentioned HL2 because it was a halfway compelling argument to segue into Phalanx.

I think some people need a little context to realise why it's the more realistic cover that is made of fail.

This is what the game looks like:

I would never buy a game that has that second box art. The first is far more appealing to me.

I get the picture. They were trying to make it look like Medieval.

I still don't get it. I usually don't, from Heavy Rain's art to Uncharted 2's to this. Thousands of dollars went into developing each cover, I'm sure, and it seems like just a waste for them to vary so wildly.

Maybe there's a grime filter for the US release to make it more edgy & darker.

One thing to consider is the art on the first box would make it look like a child's game. WEEBLES WOBBLE BUT THEY NEVER FINISH THE DAMN CASTLE!

The second is just stupid in general though. They could have tried something that didn't try to play up a warfare aspect.

The second cover is what is wrong with this country.

The first cover isn't any better though. I am not a fan, but I'd more attracted towards that game screen Jonno posted.

Well the first is at least a decent representation of the game. They've had more cutesy covers for their games before than whatever that thing is.

Errrr, I don't see the difference. Is this one of those trick pictures, where the guy is like missing one eyelash in one version or something? Does someone have an extra finger in one of them? *shrug* Just messin' whicha.

First one reminds me of Simon the Sorcerer

Should of just made that the cover.

They are just trying to appeal to the average American gamer. The Halo and Gears of War crowd.

It's a stupid decision, but there you have it.

Needs more brown.

I dunno, honestly, I don't think either of those boxes works for me. The first looks like an edutainment game, and the second looks like a cheap Total War knockoff.

Really, it seems like the correct style to ape here would've been Warcraft III: all they need are blue roofs and they're set.
