Today, Dipswitch (http://www.playitreviewit.com/dipswitch) takes us to the not-so-distant future, where all our problems can be solved by digging holes and creating miniature mountains. Think about the possibilities: you stumble home from a night at the bars, and can't find your keys. No problem! Just dig a hole under your doorstep.

Am I the only one who enjoyed the Fracture (http://www.lucasarts.com/games/fracture/) demo? I was impressed with the functionality of manipulating the world around me. Unfortunately, I saw no reason to move past the demo and buy the game, as I couldn't see playing the game for more than 20 minutes and enjoying it. That's the problem with a lot of games now adays; a developer creates an innovative, interesting idea, puts it on a pedestal, and places it on a giant mound of shit. Why can't a game with a really interesting new mechanic, be built around a really great game?

My feeling is, with the incredible budgets of many titles now a-days, you cannot take a chance on a title that has a new mechanic that may not work, and build an epic, AA or AAA title around it. Furthermore, there has to be an aspect of taking quite a bit of time to flesh out and test the game mechanic, which takes away from the other aspects of the title.

Dead Space ('http://deadspace.ea.com/") is a great title to reference in this situation. I am absolutely jiving on this title, and while I attribute it to some great design by the developers, I also attribute a portion to the fact that the Dead Space mechanics are pretty tried and tested. Third person, over the shoulder, shoot em up game. There's nothing too fancy being done here, so time can be spent polishing everything about the game, as opposed to focusing a microscope on one portion of the title.

Even if you were to bring in a comparison to Half Life 2, and the use of the Gravity Gun, it's pretty easy to realize that while the Gravity Gun was innovative, the game was not built around it, and it was used in a way that did not detract from the focus on the rest of the title.

At end of the day, though, it comes down to the fact that Lucasarts felt that the idea was interesting, but did not put the necessary budget, or talent, in order to make it really successful. The game industry truly needs to come to the point where it can try new ideas, and not have to worry about taking the risks necessary to bring those new ideas to market.

A man can dream.

See you next week for more Dipswitch!

To be fair, my angst with this game came from the fact that your (sic) hero, Jet Brody...a name that should scream 'RAD!' right into your auditory canal everytime you say it...is as stupid as a bucket of lungfish.

This comic is my interpretation of the tutorial at the beginning of the game. Full disclosure: I played for an hour, and didn't like the fact that they give you no reason to play the game. Your 'character' is a complete waste of some fine animator and artists' time. If you're going to make him an 'everyman', do something like put him under a reflective helmet like the hero of HALO, don't shave his head, scar up his face and give him the voice of someone from Yu Gi Oh.

I feel it's safe to say I could have eaten a copy of US News, Omni, and National Geographic and shit you out a better story.

Thumbs down.

What do you mean like Portal? Portal was built entirely around the teleporting; it was the only game mechanic. Fracture and Half Life 2 are much more comparable because in HL2 you have the Gravity Gun which does something new and innovative, but you also have regular guns and gameplay as well. Fracture had shooting components as well as the manipulation of the world around you. The difference is, Valve invested an incredible amount of time and money into HL2, Fracture didn't get the same treatment.

So that makes two games that LucasArts has done this year based on a concept and failed to deliver?

I've said it elsewhere, but Fracture never looked like more than a glorified tech demo to me and boy howdy, did it ever deliver. I rented the game and played the tutorial and really enjoyed manipulating the environment for about 15 minutes or so. Then the shooting started.

When a shooter stops being fun when the shooting starts, there's something seriously wrong with your game design. The fact that it was more effective for me to just run up and smack someone with the butt of my rifle than to try to line up a shot and take them down just sucked.

I really like the terrain deformation though.

Thanks for the ups.

Yeah, I guess we're still in beta blocker mode. :)

And I happened to like the other LucasArts effort. (http://www.playitreviewit.com/reviews/xbox360/action/star-wars--the-force-unleashed/Mp9fj0s0/1) :P

Yes, there' s abit of a problem with the database, which is why it is doing that. Once I figure this out, navigation will be fine :)
