View Full Version : Dueling Threads?

Forgive me if this issue has already been discussed.

Is there a better way to merge threads? Especially when it comes to News posts and their dopplegangers within an existing forum. Case in point:

Sandman's GTA4/Zombie Rumor (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?t=1610)- good thread full of fun discussion of possibilities if this rumor were true.

Doc's News Post (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?t=1613)- second thread will more good comments.

I understand we can't expect the News Editors to know of every thread, but if two exist as in the above example, can we merge them successfully? It sucks having to check both and comment on both. It'd be great if it was easier to merge them - maybe it is, I don't know.

Doc's has a picture. It suits my 9rd grade education better.

When you merge threads, they get reordered by post time. So if I merged those threads, Sandman's OP would become the newspost. I could just close that thread, but that upsets other people too.

What he said. I do think some searches should be made before posting news so this doesn't happen too often.

Hrm, that's a bummer. Not a really good way to deal with it then I guess. :(

Gotcha! Thanks for explaining. Wish it worked out better, but that makes sense.

There should be a way to post the thread as the news article, and perhaps the admin can add his post in before the original creator's so it shows up on the main page. Then, the next post is the original contributor's post so they get credit for finding it. I don't know if this is possible, but it's one way of dealing with the problem of creating duplicate threads.

Another way is simply to close the duplicate with a post linking to the original. Merging often mingles up sub-conversations, with the net effect being that even though the two threads are broadly about the same thing the final thread is often confusing.

And we have another one....

Norse's Thread (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?t=1617)

Psychoboy2's News (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?t=1623), 1 1/2 hours later.

Not to bag on the news guys because they do a phenomenal job digging up stuff, but it feels very redundant.

We need a Submit News option.

Yeah, I'm surprised at this. I know many contributors who can keep the news flowing...because that can use some work around here.

Yeah. It kills me having to start a regular thread for any bit of news.

BTW, if you want to submit a newspost, just compose it as you would a newspost, then send me a PM with the link.

But, keep in mind, that neither Norse nor Sandman's posts would have made it to the frontpage as composed. They're pretty much just one line and a blockquote. That's not a news post.

So you want us to basically format it as it would be on the main page? Also, I assume we'd still follow the standard guideline for the reporters name or will one of you guys simply fill that in?

In interest of preventing too many duplicate threads, we're closing this thread. We've got another thread about this over here (link) in the news section where you can continue your discussion."

It's not just a lockdown without explanation.

So you want us to basically format it as it would be on the main page?Absolutely, in fact, here's the official news submission guidelines (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?t=14). There's other great comments and things to think about in that same thread, as well.

Also, I assume we'd still follow the standard guideline for the reporters name or will one of you guys simply fill that in?If you want your real name to show up in the newspost header (such as Nathaniel "Doctor Setebos" Payne), then just fill out your real first and last name in your profile. It will appear automatically then. Otherwise, it will just display your username.
