View Full Version : PS3 Game Patches...er...Updates

So I am a happy camper with my PS3, particularly since I managed to get a 60gb one for a very reasonable price here at work...but one thing that drives me nuts is the game patching process. The Burnout bikes patch in particular was a real pain...I'd try to download the patch...my PS3 would ponder whether or not it liked pancakes or waffles for a while...and then I'd get a "there's a problem with the download" error.
Oddly enough, system updates and purchases from the PSN store haven't been a problem at all. It's just the game updates.
And it doesn't matter which game. Unreal Tournament, Soul Calibur, Pain, Burnout...hell even Life with Playstation...have all given me fits.
Any ideas what's going on? Is there something with the servers or is it maybe my network? Anyone else run into this problem?

Oh, I've been trying to update Motorstorm for the past 5 years, or so it seems. It works exactly opposite for Live. The stuff you pay for downloads like ass.

I'm not quite sure how the PS3 patches it's games. I feel like it overwrites the previous patch completely because I always get the feeling that each patch takes longer to download than the previous patch.
Patching on the 360 takes a few seconds. For the PS3, I literally walk away while it patches.
What I don't seem to get, either, is why the PSN store downloads aren't up to date. I recently bought Pain and it was actually a "pain" to play because it kept going through an update, reset, update pattern as it brought it self up to date. For a game that was out as long as it has been, that can really add up to a lot of updates. (/rant).

I'm glad to see I am not the only one experiencing this. The worst is when it decides to actually reboot the system. Most games I get from Gamefly take a couple of hours at times to actually play most games.

What's odd is that I can download PSN purchases and system updates no problem. This just happens with game updates.

Burnout Paradise did that several times with the bikes update. The PS3 would beep, reset and start over from scratch. Very frustrating.
I'm really glad to see this isn't just me too. I was starting to think my PS3 was possessed or something.
