Anyone hear about this today?

They say it was a 26 ft wave but I wonder if that's just the face measurement? It seems a lot bigger than 26 ft if it actually came through the glass on the main deck. Unfortunately looks like 2 people were killed as well.

WTF is a rogue wave? Do they somehow know which way the waves should be traveling and how big they should be? If so, wouldn't the cruise ship be sailing with the waves and not against/through? Just food for thought.

Also, I believe that wave deserves a reward.

Rogue waves are things that are completely unpredictable and appear out of nowhere. One of the most fascinating things I learned in my Oceanography class.

Also, won't load.

26 feet is more than it may sound like. That's over 4 times taller than a tallish man, at least as tall as most two-story buildings.

Next time you go to your bank - which I'm guessing is probably two-floors - imagine a wall of water as tall as that. Pretty serious.

What I was getting at is there are different ways of measuring waves. The most common is crest to trough but in Hawaii, I know they only measure the face of the wave which is only half of the crest to trough measurement.

Probably just the face then, especially since the wave from top to bottom could have been much larger depending on how far out the cruise ship was.

Rouge waves are insane and scary. One of the few things left that can endanger a cruise ship.

This has to do with a phenomenon called wave interference. As swell waves propagate across the ocean, waves from different places of origin will eventually meet and collide, producing interference.

There are 3 types of interference:
Constructive - occurs when two waves trains of similar wavelength collide and combine in phase. There is no effect on wavelength, but wave height increases.

Destructive - occurs when the wave crest of one swell wave combines with the wave trough of another.

Mixed - occurs when wave trains of different lengths and heights encounter each other, producing haphazard, complex wave patterns. Rogue waves are formed as a result of mixed interference, and is totally unpredictable. They actually happen far more often that people realize.

Hope that helps a bit.

Seems to be working for me. this is the link from youtube:

Half the height of wave crest to wave trough is called the amplitude.

I have a friend who's chief engineer on a cargo ship and they see these from time to time. I know once he was hauling cars for a while and has seen a couple cars go right over the side when they got hit with a large wave. I can't imagine going to the harbor to pick it up and hearing "uh Your cars somewhere between here and California"

Maybe in physics lab but I never heard the word amplitude on a surf report. It must just be an island thing because Ive never heard it anywhere else. I guess they actually got hit with a series of three waves of similar height from what the reports are saying now.

Really? That's interesting to know. I know wave amplitude as the maximum positive displacement from the undisturbed position of the medium, to the top of the crest.

so, wave height (H) and amplitude (a)
therefore: a = H/2

Yeah. Jesus doesn't come on any old day. Mary Magdalene can attest to that. *Rimshot*

My sister in law LIVES in Kaohsiung, and had just flown back here for her wedding. I don't even know if they were wheels down in the States yet when the quake hit.
