Sony and Zipper Interactive have announced SOCOM 4, coming this fall for the Playstation 3.

Sony won't reveal too much about the game, but here's what we know. The single-player campaign is set in Southeast Asia, and you're commanding a team of five trying to stop a military coup. The 14 missions of the campaign are seamless, so the old days of refitting between missions are gone.

Zipper won't say if the game will include co-op play, only that undisclosed MP modes will support up to 32 players at once.

They're taking the Naughty Dog approach to single player, meaning they're motion capturing the actors as they speak their lines and whatnot. It certainly looks good. I'm not exactly excited for this, but if the single player is something worth playing I might check it out down the line.

I never could get into the SOCOM games because I was busy playing Counterstrike and Battlefield, I considered getting Confrontation but never did.... this is a meh on my radar but I suppose if it gets good reviews and reactions I'll pick it up.

Not exactly what I was expecting from that announcement, but I'll wait and see how this one shapes up (though I already like the fact that there's a single-player campaign this time).

couldn't get into socom confrontation with no sp. the ps2 and psp games were great sp campaigns, its good to see they are having one in the next installment.

i guess there's no support for MAG with a new socom coming?

Looks like MAG was just one big beta for Socom 4.

From the link.

Oh, and before we let you go, we wanted to send a message to our SOCOM and MAG fans all over the world. First, if you play MAG and wonder what this means for the game’s future, wonder no more – we’re still fully committed to supporting MAG for a long, long time and the addition of another game in our lineup doesn’t change that.

A company like Zipper who has traditionally only made one game at a time... a long time in between their titles to release two huge online games in one year, I'll believe it when I see it. This kills any idea I had for buying MAG and I'll just wait for Socom instead.

edit: not only that, this pretty much confirms the death of Socom Confrontation.

I always wondered who played the SOCOM games. Looks like I'll continue to wonder.

I do. I didn't get into Confrontation as much as the previous version but I'm looking forward to 4.

Bleh, it had to be one of their franchises that I couldn't care less about.

Why is that exactly? MAG and SOCOM are two entirely different kinds of games. Unless you can only play one "shooter" per year, but I kinda doubt that.

Damn, someone should really tell Slant Six that two games in the same franchise can't exist at once.

As pointed out, this is a studio that has always worked on one game at a time and the have always has large gaps between their games. If they can support two huge online games at once... more power to them but like I said, I'll believe it when I see it.

Edit: Also there is no telling how bad the cluster fuck that was the Confrontation launch hurt the Socom brand. From what I've been reading on other forums before Confrontation, Socom 3 pissed off a lot of the hardcore users.
