Just got an email from Chris Baty at the Office of Letters and Light (the group the runs NaNoWriMo). If you were a NaNo2007 winner, you likely received one, too.

Essentially, NaNo has teamed up with an Amazon company called CreateSpace (http://createspace.com) to offer a free paperback printing of your winning NaNo2007 novel. It is being offered completely free of charge, they're even covering basic shipping. All you have to do is enter the code in your email into a special page on CreateSpace's website, upload your novel, fill in the essential details (title, author, etc.), and that's it! They will even offer to hold the book in Amazon's store and do on-demand printing and sales.

All in all, this is a phenomenal prize for "winning" NaNoWriMo. And it can act as a great incentive to work hard in this year's NaNo, as the prize will likely be the same, if not better, for 2008 winners. Sure, it's not a publishing contract with a big name imprint, but for someone who wants to feel encouraged by seeing their work in book form, it's a pretty cool trophy to put on the bookshelf.

I'm tempted to do this. Last year's story turned out pretty well, and I'd still like to tweak it and try to get it actually published. But in the meantime, a physical copy I could put on my bookshelf would be really cool.

Do you have to sign up or something. I write like a middle schooler though. <shrug>

I mean for this year? For this year you just need to create an account at www.nanowrimo.org, and then submit a copy of your story for a wordcount sometime before November 30th.

I think I will try this out this year. I was kind of brain storming a plot and setting in my head today at work and I think it's worth a shot.

We had our kick-off event in Lawrence, KS, today, and had 22 people show up, which is a record by far. I'm very excited about our community this year!
