Ah, the wait is over!
Bioware have announced the much awaited MMO-RPG set in the Knights of the Old Republic universe. I hope this doesn't mean there will be no KotOR 3 but I guess it may be a somewhat less likely now. *sigh*
Anyway, for those of you who've been waiting for a sandbox in which to brandish your lightsabers and battle each other for loot, glory and maybe even the fate of the universe, go here right now:

I'm amused that on other sites, seeing as how everyone knows next to nothing about this save a few screens and the 'story is king' speech Bioware tossed at us, they still shit all over it. Who knows how long ago those screens were taken, how everything works, how it will actually play, or what it will actually look like at release? Kind of like Warhammer was the second juggernaught holy coming of MMO's but it really didn't turn out to be.
Also if you post in an MMO related thread and the first words you type are 'I hate MMO's...', seriously, why are you bothering? Honestly curious.

Let's think about this: BioWare and LucasArts finally reveal, in a self-promoted event, their new MMO based on the Star Wars license.
Do you think they'd put out their best-looking screenshots or, as you say, shots taken long ago? You know what they say about first impressions. You think BioWare doesn't?
Ultimately, just being 'BioWare and Star Wars' isn't enough to get people to freak out anymore. They're going to need to supply us with more information. But they chose to release what they did, not us. So don't act all defensive when we, as consumers, give our thoughts on what they've provided.

Heh I'm not being defensive, I'm wondering why all the hate already. No big deal.

Likely due to LucasArts' record with the license as of late. :) Add BioWare's inexperience with MMOs and...well, there's a lot to prove yet. I'll reserve judgement until there's a beta or more critical review.

The screenshots look fine to me. MMO's are never going to be games that push graphical boundaries. The cost of developing these games is too great already. Increasing graphical fidelity pushes the budgets even higher and reduces the potential customer base. It also makes it harder to roll out additional content at a regular pace.
I'd much rather see Bioware put out a game that pushes the boundaries of the definition of an MMO away from the typical grind and loot than yet another WoW clone with prettier visuals.
As for the Bioware factor, I'm not too worried about them handling the game. Blizzard didn't have any MMO experience when they rolled out WoW either. In fact I find the thought of a capable developer like Bioware trying something new in the space more encouraging than the thought of an established MMO developer just doing the same old thing.

I don't much trust LucasArts either, I was an SWG original myself. I know that was partly SOE, but they did not make the move, they just coded it.
I am a big Bioware single player fan, so I have hope. Hope that it's like a really really big KOTOR that I can mostly do alone, kind of hope :)
Or that it actually is fun, doesn't have to be a visual knock out really. People get hung up on that quite a lot. :)

well it's no really bioware as we know them... it's a new bioware studio of all new people some with less than promising mmo record... i think the lead guy had something to do with star wars galaxies and the sims online.
So yes, i'm still waiting for a real kotor3 and i'll keep an eye on this and not at all get excited unless it comes out and there's reason to be

Blizzard had a metric ton of multiplayer experience with highly polished games, some of which are still played competitively today. They had more of a foundation for an MMO than BioWare by a long shot.
I reserve judgement on BioWare...they produced some amazing titles (under the BioWare name, not necessarily specific individuals) and some mediocre ones.

They look better than both previous games and we're talking about an MMO here. Graphics aren't gonna be much better than WoW if they want that kind of community.

I hate to say this, but George Lucas has beat the Star Wars franchise to shit. I no longer have any interest in it. I can't even muster the excitement to watch the original movies anymore. For a long time I was one of the hopeful who kept rationalizing any reason to throw more time and money at Star Wars, but I just can't do it anymore. :(
I hope this is a cool MMO, though, because I love the MMO "genre" and I hope that more and more developers start to set their games in huge, open world, multiplayer environments. If they can make money and still be different from WoW, it gives other developers more tools to make great games from in the future.

It's sad that anything george comes up with is cannon and the people behind the vast and amazing extended universe are constantly trying to fix the mess he makes... thankfully his not really stuck his nose to much in the old republic yet, which is why it's so a damn awesome setting...

They look a bit better than WoW, a bit worse than Tabula Rasa and the game is several years awy. It looks like that godawful Clone Wars movie that just came out.
Don't drink their kool-aid.

Or you might just choose your character because you like the story and personality of that character ... you're pursuing a romance with them, perhaps. Or maybe that character has really interesting quests that you want to finish.
So they're basically just putting us on the MMO money treadmill instead of releasing a stand-alone KOTOR game out of spite? I mean, that's the heart of Bioware games right there, the characters. I guess I can't fault them for wanting to shift their strong suit into the profitable structure of MMOs, but... c'mon. I wouldn't pay monthly to follow my pet's character development in DAoC or WoW even if it was amazingly good character development.

You and me 110%. I was born in '73, so when Star Wars came out, it was the single most important movie. Soon followed by Raiders, it was like Lucas could do no wrong.
Flash forward to the start of the prequels and I haven't cared since. They should've relegated George to a name on the letterhead and let the fans that grew up loving his films, now working at Lucasfilm, steer the ship.

I'm cautiously optimistic. If they go the traditional grindy MMO route I'm not at all interested, there's enough of those out there. Bioware needs to completely reinvent the MMO genre for this game to work. But if there's any company that can, it's Bioware. I mean heck, they waited this long to do their own MMO, they must have something up their sleeves.
The main challenge I think would be to completely eliminate the traditional leveling system. It has become merely a means in which to extend a few weeks of content into months or years, all the while the developer take in the monthly fees. I want an MMO that I never have to repeat an area or quest unless I choose to. IE. KOTOR with enough content to last months and ultimately years.
