On one of the lower floors of Tower of Latria, you're supposed to find a route around it, where you can deactivate the contraption and you're free to take the items around the bodies, and have a convient shortcut to the upcoming boss fight.
Thanks for this. Gonna tackle that tonight.
Also: Old King Allant is the easiest boss in the game.... if you have Death Cloud! You literally just cast it and wait while he walks around and dies a long, slow death (long being like 15 minutes). Getting close enough to cast without him detecting you is the only hard part, and it's not hard at all.
Nice tip, Tayaya. Looks like I'll be farming some souls for this spell. I'm all about the easy when it comes to this game's bosses.

I dont have that kind of patience im afraid...I just ordered it through the US ebgames website, where it is listed as in stock. They are surprisingly fast with shipping, but you have to pay brokerage fees. My experience with trying to get Atlus/niche and obscure games locally or through canadian web retailers ( we've got what? amazon.ca and futureshop/bestbuy ? ) has been less than stellar. Last time I had to order from the US was for Odin Sphere I think...got the game in 2 business days from placing the order.

Just a quick shoutout, we spent over an HOUR talking about Demon's Souls on the latest episode of The Moofcast. We also talk Brutal Legend for 20 minutes, and Uncharted 2 for about 35 minutes. Check it out if you like podcasts!
Moofcast RSS (http://moofcast.libsyn.com/rss)
Also, I don't have a NeoGAF account but if any of you post there, could you link to the show in the Demon's Souls thread? It'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance to anyone who does. :)
In game-related news, I let Yurt out. Oops. Time to get back to the Nexus, ASAP! Also, I'm officially putting Uncharted 2 on the shelf until I've had my fill of Demon's Souls. There's just no way I can stay interested with DS on the brain. :P

No stores around me even carried the game, but thankfully Amazon did/does. I hope all of you can find a copy of this that want it.
This is definitely going to stay part of my permanent collection.
I did have a weird bug tonight and I was actually booted from the game because of server issues. I tried to restart and it made me do it in offline mode...though I was obviously online and could see the rest of you signing in and out, etc. I played most of 3-1 offline, which is a very different experience when there are no "ghosts", bloodstains or messages. It's...strange.
I quit the game just now and restarted completely and I was able to sign back in. Weird, but it's working now. Unfortunately I have to go to bed now. Ah well.

There is definitely multiplayer. If you are in soul form, you can drop your Blue Soul Stone and be summoned into another player's game. This is really good for taking on bosses. Or you can drop a Red/Black Soul Stone, and invade another player's game, and try to kill them. I'm 4 for 4 on killing my invaders.:D

I actually got my copy from Amazon.ca, but I'd had it preordered since August or so. It was surprisingly fast, esp. given my usual experiences with Amazon.ca and games (ie. the launch day comes and goes and you see a "May ship within 4-6 weeks" on the order...)
I got it on the Wednesday instead of the launch day of Tuesday, which was impressive.
That said, I was poking around and saw that Videogamesplus.ca (http://www.videogamesplus.ca/product_info.php?products_id=15657) has copies of the standard version in stock and shipping within 24 hours if anyone is interested. And the Play N Trade near me still has about 5 copies on the shelf :)

Don't worry, as long as you don't die when you start your new game plus, you can totally upgrade yourself with those souls that you have. Just like the first time, though, you have to play through Phalanx before you can start piling on the upgrades!

This is the one issue I have with the game, online world tendency seems totally broken. It works great offline so if you want to do tendency specific things I suggest playing offline. Also going online will reset your tendencies so be careful.
For example I wanted to fight Miralda and get the brushwood set so I went offline and turned my tendency black for the palace, got the stuff then went back online and it reset the palace back to neutral, which it has never changed from for me in online mode regardless of what I do. Stonefeng has always shown pure white for me online but I can't get the keel smasher. So yeah, online tendencies are goofy.

World tendency effects events in game. Paths will open to new areas, certain enemies will appear etc. Here is how it works offline:
Shifting World Tendency towards Black in offline mode
* Killed by an enemy in the area while in Body form. (-1 in current world) (Note: we use this action as the definition for -1)
* Suicide in Body form (-1).
* Kill Body Form Miralda (-3). (Even if they attack you) (once per game)
* Kill Body Form Satsuki (-3). (Even if they attack you) (once per game)
* Kill Old King Doran (-3) (once per game)
Shifting World Tendency towards White in offline mode
* Kill a boss in your own World with your body (+1)
* Kill a boss in your own World in soul form (+1)
* Defeat Black Phantom Miralda. (+3) (once per game)
* Defeat Black Phantom Scirvir. (+3) (once per game)
* Defeat Black Phantom Lord Rydell. (+3) (once per game)
* Defeat Black Phantom Satsuki. (+3) (once per game)
* Defeat Black Phantom Selen. (+3) (once per game)
* Defeat Primeval Demon. (+3) (once per world per game)
* Defeat Black Phantom NPC (see above) & 1 Primeval Demon without returning to Nexus. (+6) (once per game)
* Defeat Black Phantom NPC (see above), 1 Primeval Demon and 1 Boss in your own world without returning to Nexus. (+7) (once per game)
No impact to World Tendency
* Suicide in Nexus in Body Form. (+0)
* Suicide in Nexus in Soul Form. (+0)
* Suicide in Soul Form. (+0)
* Get killed by enemy in Soul Form. (+0)
* Get killed by a Boss in Soul Form. (+0)
Note
* World Tendency changes is not reflected until you return to the Nexus.
* So, if your world is Pure Black, everything will remains in that states until you returned to the Nexus.

Well I think I had kind of nerfed my 1st toon, spread out points too much between str, stam, int, mag, dex...I didn't realized that it cost a flat amount to upgrade a soul level even if it is a low one. Anyways, I counted that as a learning experience, so I re-rolled this time going heavy on the Magic side. So now only after a short time my new toon is raising in levels, wearing what looks to be a crazy looking black suit of tatters/feathers.
Just curious for future possibilities, is rolling a dual wielding rogue-esque type of toon viable? Nearly everyone I have seen in game is heavily armored and carrying shields.

Dual-wielding is certainly possible, but I've heard it's only for the truly brave. You have to be really good with parrying if you dual wield, since you can't just walk around with a shield up all the time. Done right, however, and you could be a whirling dervish of death.
I watched a bloodstain the other day of someone holding _two_ shields. WTF was up with that?

A rapier of some kind on the left hand is ideal for dual wielders, since it's a much better parrying weapon than just about any other type in the game.
It's entirely possible to dual-wield shields. Some shields have an actual attack, but it's usually slow, low-damage, knockback type stuff, so I can't imagine fights going quickly!

You know, an upgraded Spike Shield for offense and a Steel Shield for defense could do the trick. How well this would work against bosses, I'll never know.

You have to be in soul form, meaning you've lost your body. When in soul form, you can use the Blue Soul Stone in your inventory to lay down one of those blue messages for another player to summon you into their game. There's no "invite" system of any kind... you get sucked into whoever's game gets to you first. You can usually get with who you want though if you and that person coordinate yourselves so that they can see your message the moment you drop it. (I usually have a voice chat open on xbox live with whoever I'm playing with, but have done it over PSN messages too)

Don't worry, as long as you don't die when you start your new game plus, you can totally upgrade yourself with those souls that you have. Just like the first time, though, you have to play through Phalanx before you can start piling on the upgrades!
Jumped into the new immediately after the credits rolled. And wow! Bosses got an extra kick in challenge. I died so many times on Armor Spider that I had to reform a brand new strategy for it.
Also, I created two new files for a Knight and Temple Knight. Not sure which one I want to start as while I continue as a Soldier from my original playthrough.

Congratulations Evil! While that's cool you beat the game, I'm gonna miss your travelogue updates.:(
I could snap some more pics, as I know I never got most of Boletaria Palace, Stonefang Tunnel and Tower of Latria. At this point, I think most everyone in the thread has already seen most of what Demon's Souls has to offer, but it was very fun to do and would look to do it with another game, depending on what it is. :)

(I usually have a voice chat open on xbox live with whoever I'm playing with, but have done it over PSN messages too)
and to lose your body is to die and resurrect? (haven't been playing for too long to know everything there is to know)

Yep. You'll know you're in soul form because your life bar will only go to 50% (75% if you are wearing the Cling Ring, like you should be). Also, your armor won't clank around as much as it normally does, and enemies won't attack you until you get closer.
You can get your body back by beating a boss, or by helping another player beat a boss... or by using a Stone of Ephemperel Eyes.

Yes and no. The path to finish a world's area is kinda linear (there is some exploration), but the order in which you tackle each world's area is up to you. For instance, I beat 2-1 and 2-2 (Stonefang Tunnel), worked on 3-1 (Tower of Latria), and beat 4-1 through 4-4 (Shrine of Storms). If that makes sense.

Tried for 3 hours today and just could not beat 4-2. For the first 2 hours I was just too underpowered to play normally and I kept getting impatient so I died a ton due to the skeletons and sting rays. The third reaper and his ghost friend right next to him killed me a lot as well. I finally gave up and came back later and decided to get some help by summoning 2 guys at a time. Only problem is if I get good partners I die, and if they suck I can't kill the boss. It just seems like it's impossible to beat the blind demon once he "sees" you. Once I attack it's a "He knows where I am so I need to run from his incoming attack" and "Now that I ran from his attack he knows where I am" never-ending cycle. After wasting 5 Ephemeral stones I turned it off because I was running out of stones and was thoroughly beaten. I really need to find a place to farm stones soon if I plan to keep this up.
It's been a very long time since I've been beaten down that bad from a game so I'm filled with joy and red hot anger. :p

One thing I've noticed is a complete lack of light armor strictly for males, as far as I've seen, females get all the cool stuff.

If you beat the optional boss Old King Doran, you get his armor set. While it's sort of heavy, it doesn't harm stamina regeneration the way most heavy armor does.

Thanks, I'll have to check that out when I get there. I might just equip select pieces of it. I like my full dodge roll animation. Anyone know if upping the equip burden heightens the threshold for movement speed and the like?

From what I understand, your movement (dodging, most noticeably) slows when you exceed half your equip burden.
I just beat 2-1, my second boss, last night and I feel so overwhelmed by this game. I chose a wanderer and I would like to wear heavy leather armor, but all I can find is plate armor available for sale and it's terrible for me (I need to dodge and roll often). Any place I can find decent armor, or even farm for arrows without having to spend any souls?

In 2-2 you can get Patches to show up in the Nexus for doing his micro side quest. He sells Heavy Arrows for 30 a pop. I know you don't want to spend souls but they are cheap, and I'm sure you can find a quick grind spot.
If you can take out the octopus heads in 3-1 they can give you about 500 a piece. Of course there is always something that yields more.
Also, with the feeling overwhelmed thing, try every beginning level in each area to get used to things.

After feeling like I hit the wall for a couple of nights, I just had a major breakthrough last night. In one session I took down Dragon God, Maneater x2, and Old Monk. I had no idea that Old Monk would be another player. I ran up and down the stairs looking for him before finally giving up and entering the boss fight, not realzing it was the boss itself. I must have kept that dude waiting for like 5-10 minutes! lol
Anyway, I'm still loving the shit out of this game. Nothing like a few boss fights under your belt to stimulate your sense of accomplishment!

If I understand correctly, 1-4 is the final area with the final boss. You can't get there until you beat an archdemon, which is the final boss of a world/zone. So you'd need to complete at least one of the other worlds/zones to get there.

Playing a New Game+ really is different the second time around. I know that I largely get by since I have most of my upgraded weapons from the first go round, but not only are demons tougher, without some sort of upgraded shield, the opposition just ate away at my stamina and took me out in at least one or two hits. :D
So far I've continued to redefeat Armor Spider and Fool's Idol. I decided to try and redefeat Maneater(s) and Flamelurker....lemme get back to someone on that one.

Ha, I tried defeating Maneater for the first time, and I still can't do it, even with the shield spell. I think I'm just using the wrong sword, I barely do any damage with the Dragon Long Sword. Then eventually I get one shotted in the back by the other Maneater's green missle because I don't see it coming. I need to find another approach. I'm going to try to beat 4-1 tomorrow.

When fighting Maneater, use the fire in the middle area to your advantage. Keep it between you and it. For a while, you should only have to fight one maneater. Just focus on keeping the fire between you and them. When they do the AOE attack (like the one the Davy Jones looking fuckers use), the fire should absorb it and keep you safe. Then run up and slash at them a bit, retreat to other side of fire.
I did real good damage when I fought them, but my strength was at 26 and I was using a Long Sword +8. Take that for what you will. Good luck!

Even if you clear 1-4, the endgame doesn't unlock until you beat all of the Archdemons, so you DO need to complete every level to be able to beat the game.
I had an awesome Demon's Souls day yesterday - solo'd Maneater, beat Old Monk (though they guys he kept pulling for me to fight were ridiculous at times, eventually he pulled some poor shmuck that couldn't even dent my hitponts. He eventually gave up, and stood there letting me kill him. His evade was super good and I hard time hitting him.... he was the better player, but I had the superior character), did all of the Shrine of Storms, and 5-1.
Dying a bunch in 5-2, mostly out of impatience. I have decided though that I am indeed going to try and get all of the game's trophies, though, so this first time through I'm trying to collect as many of the unique items and weapons as I can, and get all the things that require Pure White Tendency out of the way.
It looks like the hardest things to actually do is farm up enough mats to make the +10 weapons (hard and sharpstone) and +5 weapons (all other stone types). Lowering my tendency will make that easier, but that seems to be where the difficult trophies really are, at least on the first playthrough.
I have collected a nice spread of cool and unique items, though!

Because of the boosts that the Viscous (Sticky in the US version) bow gets from your stats, a +5 sticky bow will actually outdamage the Lava Bow over time. The Lava Bow is a better bow if you are going through the game on your first playthrough, but later in life you can use a +5 Sticky and deal absurd levels of damage. Very good choice there.

Highest I could get it was +4, damn lizards wouldn't drop a perfect dark moonstone. I'm guessing drops on lizards change in a new game +, considering I found a pure spiderstone off a lizard in 2-1 on my very first kill.
EDIT nevermind I found out they can drop the pure spiderstones just at a low rate. Doesn't matter though since you get one for free from the 2-1 major demon.
I also have a +5 Crescent Uchigatana but I think I'm gonna quit using it soon since I don't exactly use the pierce attack it has. I need to get Soulbrandt and try it out so I'm rushing through area 2 as quick as I can so I can get to 4-1 to unlock the Mausoleum. If you're going to farm, do 4-2 and keep killing the reaper over and over. Run on the bridge until you're right over him, drop down on the side, slice him up, and get out. Rinse repeat. Thanks, Uno. I meant to put that one up here earlier but work was stressing me out at the time and I never got around to finishing my post. I love 4-2. Run to the edge of the path, shoot the reaper twice with a bow, then jump down and kill the skeleton samurai behind the secret door going up one of the side staircases. As long as you don't let him get too close and actually hit you, he isn't so bad. This gets you about 9k souls, and takes no time at all.

I let Patches the Hyena live, since he's my main source of arrows (I use Heavy Arrows almost exclusively). Yes, he'll kick you into the pit, but it's necessary to get Saint Urbain outta there and also if you have White Tendency you can grab the Magic Sword "Makoto" from down there as well. You won't die, though, if that's what you're worried about (unless Satsuki kills you as he is down there too).
As for the Miracle salesman not being in the Nexus anymore. You didn't...umm.... let Yurt out of his cage and not kill him, did you?

Not that I'm aware of..... I did let a guy out of a cage in 4-1, but I don't believe that was Yurt, that was a guy I'm pretty sure the Hyena had locked up. In fact, I think he's standing at the beginning of 4-2. It's been a week and a half since I last played, though, so I'm not 100% on that.
EDIT: I saw this on the Wiki and hadn't seen it posted here, so I figured I'd spread the word:
IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING A POSSIBLE GAME-STOPPING BUG
There have been a few reports of players that have cleared all the stages and bosses of the game but not having the Maiden in Black lead them to the game's end event. In two of these cases we have found out that the player died from the Dragon God's final breath attack (not the fire breath) at the same time or immediately after defeating the Dragon God. Afterwards, the players were able to return to collect the Dragon God's soul, gain access to 1-3, and seemingly progress their game normally. However, at least one of the players was not awarded the trophy for defeating the Dragon God (we're still trying to confirm with the other players), and as mentioned before, both hit a critical bug when the end event should have triggered. Given the low probability that a player would die at the same time as killing a boss, it's unlikely that these players coincidently both did this, so it is almost certainly the cause of the end-game bug.
As such, we recommend being extra careful when defeating bosses so that you don't die at the same time. We've not heard reports of this occurring with any boss other than Dragon God, but better safe than sorry. Because it is most likely (or possibly only) to occur with the Dragon God, please see the Dragon God Boss Strategy section (http://www.atlus.com/mediawiki/index.php/Stonefang_Tunnel#Dragon_God) for info on how to avoid it.

Ahh, ok, then I'll do that. I can see the benefit from letting him live.
The guy in 4-1 that you let out is Graverobber Blige. Yurt was the guy in the cool black suit of armor in 3-2, who asks that you free him so that he can help you kill Demons. Reason I ask is that while he's harmless when freed, he will eventually start killing everyone in the Nexus. You'll know this is happening because before anyone important dies, a couple of corpses will appear in the Nexus in out of the way corners. If you hadn't killed Yurt by the time they appear, killing him should become your number one priority at that time!

Oh I am in trouble. I went to visit Ed last night with the thought of making a Sticky Compound Longbow. Just as I stand next to him, I decided to take a break (I had just killed Maiden Astraea) and get something to drink. As I set my controller down on my couch, the controller slipped, and hit R2.
I stabbed Ed and set him on fire briefly with my Dragon Long Sword.
He started wailing on me so I ran, and re-loaded my game. After re-load, I jumped down to Ed. Nope, won't talk to me, wants to kick my ass. So I jump to the Nexus and jump back to Stonefang and jump down to Ed. I'm fucked. Ed won't talk to me any more, he only wants to fight. So, I kill him and loot the Hands of God. Now, I have to make my way through the rest of the game without being able to upgrade any special weapons.:(
When DS went offline for maintenance, there was enough White Tendency to free Rydell and get the other goodies on 2F in 3-1. I also beat the Dragon God, and worked through 3-1 and 3-2. However, the Maneaters have me for lunch, even with Warding and using the center flame pyre. I lost 30k souls when I was heading back to Maneater for a 3rd try and fell down the long spiral stairs to his fog and my bloodstain.:(
Now that I have the Ring of Avarice, I'm gonna farm some 4-2 and 4-4 and raise the stats up a bit before tackling Maneater again. Once I clear the Tower of Latria, I'll be ready for the rest of Boletaria Castle and the end game.

I can help you out with Maneater if your Soul Level is close enough to my own (68 I think is what I'm at). I actually enjoy that fight now.
As for Ed, you will just have to wait until your next playthrough to finish upgrading your weapons. Don't worry, though, as your mats will all carry over into new game + mode, so as soon as you get the Red Hot Demon's Soul, you'll be back in business!

This has happened to me three times now. If you Immediately hit the PS button and quit the game, you can go back to before. You might miss out of like 5 minutes of the game you played, but it is a small price to pay compared to losing an NPC that you really need.

I find the best way to farm 4-2 is to shoot the reaper then run out of the tunnel and straight off the cliff. You only have one load screen then, pick your souls up in the tunnel on the way back down.
Also beware of quitting to the dashboard, it can corrupt your saved games.

As far as I know the only penalty is the guilt you feel for killing the person that up to now has done naught but serve to help you on your quest. Though I guess in all fairness she does have a demon inside her, since she's always asking you to touch it.... so maybe you thought she had it coming!

Oops, I sent Tayaya an invite last night.:o I'll have to delete that and re-send the invite.
I also discovered the secret to easy farming of 4-4: Storm Ruler. I never used Storm Ruler when I defeated Storm King, so it sat with Thomas all this time. The first time I tried to farm 4-4 with my Lava Bow I died by getting impaled by multiple spears. The 2nd time, I used Warding, hit my bloodstain, hid in the house, and proceeded to spend 20 minutes killing the manta ray things with my bow. Even though I harvested 18k souls with the bow and Ring of Avarice, it took waaaaay too long.
Then I remember Storm Ruler. I equip it, run for the house, and target a ray. I hit R1 to attack, a cool wind animation plays, and 4 rays fall dead! Within a couple minutes I had another 18k souls and the Maiden in Black (aside: it's true, btw. you can't kill the Maiden, she apologizes for not dying.) raised my STR to 26. My next few play sessions is going to be farming 4-4 with Storm Ruler to raise my stats before hitting Maneater and Old Monk.

Spent about two hours last night going nowhere. I got killed on the way to Old Hero, then tried to be somebody's blue phantom at Armor Spider and Flamelurker, but nobody summoned me. So then I got summoned on 4-2 instead, but like 10 people all died on the way to Old Hero, and another 3 or 4 died during the fight. Plus, I lost like 70K souls at one point. Boo-urns.
Going to try to get my body back and take on Old Hero by myself today. Wish me luck!

Good luck. The strat guide says that Old Monk is easier in offline mode.
I do have a question, though: can you be summoned into a player's New Game +? I helped a guy take down Flamelurker last night, and got 30k souls for it. He seemed tougher to take down this time. The only reason I could think of for this was because the guy who summoned me was in New Game +? This happen to anyone else?

Old Hero is where I'm at. Not Old Monk. I already killed that one, and I did it online. Funny thing is it told me I was being invaded, so I ran up and down the stairs looking for the black phantom, not realizing it would be the boss himself. I must have made the guy wait like 10 minutes before I gave up and went in there to fight.
And I think you can only be summoned into games with players who are within 10 levels of your own. Maybe Flamelurker was harder because your partner was weaker this time?

This is the right answer. So yes, if you've been grinding away at your character it's entirely possible you'll end up in someone's NG+ simply because your Soul Level is so high.
The level window is believed to be +-20 levels off of your own until about level 75, then narrows to +-10 levels. No one seems to have officially confirmed this, though.

Enemies are a little tougher to kill. Not in the artificial sense of your best weapons made mincemeat out of everything the first time through, but now feels like your chipping away at a piece of metal with a toothpick. The biggest thing I found out the hard way is that without some sort of an upgraded shield, most attacks will drain your stamina (and health).
Other than that, you may have to switch up your tactics a bit, but you should be able to run through the game like before, as long as you mind your personal defensive play. Some bosses are even tougher, to give you a heads up.

Actually, from what I've read from Atlus, going from normal game to NG+ is the biggest jump in difficulty. After NG+, each consecutive play through isn't supposed to be that big of a jump in difficulty.

Move carefully, with shield raised, and strike only when there's an opening. It's a lot to sift through, but there is a metric ton of great advice in this thread. Don't forget to go back through Evil's travelogue too.

Ran into 4-1 for fun last night, fully expecting to have my ass handed to me, but quite the opposite happened! Went all the way to the boss by accident, and kicked his ass on the first try. I got a bunch of swords and even the shield which depicts the boss of the level (Evil has it in his pics and I was quite jealous) but I'm not that impressed with it. It blocks 50 while my Steel Shield +1 blocks 84, but I understand it regenerates health? Does that stack with my regenerator ring? I think I might use it just because it's so pretty though.
BTW what is your typical magical memory? I have two just to use the Iron Demon's shield, but I'm almost strictly a melee character. Interested a couple of other spells though and wondering if it's worth my time or if I should I just focus on my main stats. I'm really obsessed with Endurance for stamina, hoping to eventually dual wield some Asian swords.

I'm getting better...of course, restarting as a Royal has helped TONS. Soul Arrow is awesome. I expect it'll be out-down later on, but man, ranged attack that instant kills nearly everything in 1-1? GODSEND. I spent 3 hrs on a thief trying to get to the thief ring. Took me 40 min. to get to the dragons as a royal. I just hate the rapier.
It's fun as hell, and I'm certainly getting better. Roll Roll Roll. I am TERRIBLE at the parry critical attack thing, and trying to do it has caused me to die more times than I care to admit.

Do it melee, he is stupidly easy. Just drop down, hit him in his wound (on his left side, your right facing him), that will cause him to eventually bend over. Once he does that whack the bird thing on his head as much as possible, rinse and repeat til he's dead. You can just circle him counter clockwise and never get hit.

Gorvi's advice is the best and easiest way - hit him in the cleaver that's stuck into his left (your right) side. A few strikes there and he falls right over, then you can mercilessly beat the golden bird nesting on top of his head.
But to answer your question - absolutely. If you have a good bow you can rain arrows down on him and kill him off pretty fast, but his tongue can hit you when you're on the staircase heading down, so it's not 100% safe. I hear there ARE some 100% safe places in the area, but I've never bothered to look for them since he's so easy to topple.

I respectfully disagree. Get a good bow, heavy arrows, stand on the 2nd level, and hit the bird on his head with arrows. His tongue and cleaver are easy to dodge.

It only took a half-dozen tries with other players, but I FINALLY beat Maneater. The fuckers kept knocking me off the edge. Warding was a huge help in surviving their hits and spells.
Once, on my way to Maneater, I got summoned by Old Monk to fight another player. That player didn't survive the two black phantom Octo-Men on the way to Old Monk, so I got the Old Monk Wrappings by default. For my Old Monk run, another player and I took down a Black Phantom Player, it was pretty cool.
So, all areas finished, except for the Castle. I'd have 1-3 beaten by now, but these motherfucker players kept invading my game. One asshole backstabbed me when I was buying grass from the Skagling merchant. I did defeat one, but I may play 1-3 mostly offline until I get to Penetrator.

Ok, I recall someone having trouble with the game acting offline. I had that problem all last night so how do you fix it? The weird thing is that I actually was NOT offline until later that night, but there were no messages or bloodstains and I couldn't leave any either. Very frustrating...
I would quit out of the game, sign out and then back into PSN, the load up DS.
Sorry I wasn't there for ya, man. I haven't been back on the PS3 since last time I was lookin' for ya - when you had sent the friend req to Tayaya
No worries. I would have fallen off the ledge anyway.:p

This happened to me a couple of nights back. Just like you, I was in the middle of buying some items from Graverobber Blige (who was in a cramped prison cell at the time). I tried to get out of there, but I was backstabbed pretty quickly.
However, I just learned the Banish miracle from Saint Urbain. The description says it sends Black Phantoms back to their own world, so maybe I have a way to end these surprise invasions a little quicker.

....Does that stack with my regenerator ring? I think I might use it just because it's so pretty though.
The shield can be combined with the regen ring; you just have to remember that the HP regen effect of the shield won't kick in when you grip a weapon with both your hands.
BTW what is your typical magical memory? I have two just to use the Iron Demon's shield, but I'm almost strictly a melee character. Interested a couple of other spells though and wondering if it's worth my time or if I should I just focus on my main stats....
As I play a Soldier, I pooled enough points into Faith to keep three miracle slots open for "Evacuate", "Cure" and "Heal". I also pooled enough for three spell slots, only I never needed them until I saw the description for "God's Wrath".

Just a quick question. I was fighting the old monk on NG+ last night and doing ok until he stands up and blasts me with soul arrow ( the blue one, not the yellow moving ones he has up). Has anyone ever seen him do this before? Of course he one shotted me when it happened and he was almost dead. Ive never seen him do this before, so I don't know if it was a glitch or what.

The blue-souled guy at the nexus...does he just randomly die/fade away through the game? I was playing and beat the Fire guy just before the Dragon God, and went back to the nexus. Before fight he was there, saying he didn't remember me or where he was, and next thing I know after the fight, there's a soul to loot there.
This happen to anyone else?
The only thing I hate about this game is the fact that when you die on the way to where you died originally, EVERY original soul is forfeit. I really wish there was some way of saving souls, even if it cost like 50% to 'deposit' them or something...losing 50k in souls really hurts.

The blue-ish guy in front of the first world did the exact same thing to me too. He started talking gibberish and was freaked out by my presence, then I go into a world for maybe 10-15 mins and come back to find a soul.
Ever since I rescued Saint Urbain, this Temple Knight guy that was sitting next to where Urbain is now has vanished. Maybe he just went into one of the later worlds?

I know world tendency has a lot to do with things that happen with the worlds and who you meet up with (and whether they're hostile or not towards you sometimes) but I haven't even started to mess with that stuff, honestly. I think when I go NG+ I'll try some of that stuff out to get certain things...right now I feel almost sort of lost. But I still love the hell out of this game.

I know your pain. But your best bet is to get past the first section, and then climb up. From there, if you've got arrows (about 200 I think) or a ranged magic attack (I had soul arrow) you can position yourself just right to spend the next 45 minutes killing the dragon :p

It's do-able with Soul Arrow, but I found it easier with a bow and about 80 arrows. Yeah, it's tedious, but it really does make that entire bridge section much easier if you don't have to worry about getting crisped. Also, you can go loot the Dragon's stuff back in 1-1.
Just killed Flamelurker. Jebus that was tense -- hadn't faced him yet, decided to go with a magic/ranged approach. Worked for a while, and then when his health hit maybe 10%, he got pissed (does he get faster? He sure seemed to), managed to trap me in a corner and pound the living crap out of me. But I somehow survived, rolled out, ran like heck, and put enough distance where I could finally zap him a couple more times. Fantastic, on-the-edge-of-my-seat fight.

Yep, first time I fought him he tore into me like I was a piece of construction paper and this was pre-school. Ended up rolling into a corner and couldn't get out in time. Of all the bosses I faced so far, he was the most intense.
As for the dragon, it takes forever with the soul arrow because it only did about 20 dmg each hit (for me) and I'd have to wait for my magic to recharge as well...no spice, and the ring take FOREVER to recharge. Add the fact I had no arrows and there ya go. But once he's down you get his soul (Dunno what it makes) and a fire-free bridge.

I tried to take him down with Soul Arrow and Fire Bolt last night and it took forever to line up a shot on him through the crennelations on that tower. Then I accidentally looked in the wrong direction and couldn't get a shot off that wouldn't hit the wall instead of him.
I wish there was a way to do some kind of first-person targeting with the spells, esp. for something like that where you are just trying to line up a corridor of fire, not track the thing.
That said, I went back and worked on 1-1 a bit and finally managed to take down the Red Knight. Woo! It might not be much, but it was something that I accomplished, which was more than I can say for my previous efforts with the game :)
Also grinded the snot out some skellies on the Shrine of Storms and bumped up my stats a bit.

There is, sort of. Line up a shot with the bow in first person, and then switch to your catalyst without moving. You'll fire the spell along the same trajectory. Unfortunately, each spell you fire tends to make you take a small step backwards so you'll eventually have to line up again.

Coming from that direction, that part can be a pain -- you can get surrounded by enemies and have to deal with those two archers up top (who have excellent range, it seems). If you can take the archers out (I never attempted this), or can kite one of the blue-eyed knights back down the path, it might help. It's not so easy getting their attention sometimes since they're standing behind the group of cross-bow men.

I found the little field to the left right when you start 1-1 (how many times did I walk right past that staircase?) and made it to the castle after fighting several red phantoms only to get SLAUGHTERED by the red and black phantom (which I assume is just a regular black phantom) impersonating the person with the big axe. I almost killed her once but slipped up and let her touch me with her axe, which meant insta-death. Oh well.
Other than that, just a lot of red phantoms everywhere. I went to grind on the Shrine Of Storms and bammo... Red phantoms popped up when you spawned. They were awesome if you could take them down (+1000 or so souls per) but ended up not being worth the effort.

Yeah, with Flamelurker, as long as you keep rolling and don't get caught, he's very do-able. The area also gives you a decent amount of space to run around in, thank goodness.
Maneater, on the other hand, WTF.

I found Maneater extremely easy. When the fight starts run to the torch burning in the center area and hide behind it, this will block any projectiles. When he comes at you with melee be sure to get behind him and cut off his tail "for massive damage". Continue to hide and attack when you can, that's pretty much it.
I did have my cleaver and was able to kill the first right as the second appeared so I guess it would be harder if you had to fight both at once.

FYI, I just received this from Atlus (http://atlus.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5072):
Dearest Customers,
Over the last couple weeks, we’ve received reports from owners of the Deluxe Edition of Demon’s Souls that some copies of the Official Strategy Guide were experiencing unusual cover ink wear/fading.
While it seems that not every copy of the guide is affected, and the specific cause of the issue remains unclear, Atlus always strives for nothing less than the full satisfaction of our customers. Therefore, we will soon launch a program to replace defective strategy guides.
Stay tuned for details on when the program will begin and specific steps on how to submit your replacement request. We can say at this time that we will ask customers to mail in their cover and the first page of their guide as proof of purchase, leaving them with a usable book while we process their replacement claim. Full instructions will be posted in this thread next week.
Thank you for supporting us and making Demon’s Souls such a big hit. We apologize for any inconvenience this issue has caused, but fear not: we’ve got you covered (pun intended).Just wanted to pass that on.

Interesting. I havent' had that problem, but I just started really digging into the guide over the past few days (mostly for stats and such, not the walkthrough). I'd guess that it's oily skin or something like that causing the fading.

Yeah, my goal tonight is to grind a bit so that my stats are good enough for the cleaver then take on Maneater. How do you chop off the tail?

Just swing in the general area of the tail, they are pretty slow so just dodge an attack or wait for an opening and get behind or on the side of him. If you have the cleaver use the overhand swing.

I got to play a whopping 15 minutes this morning, my son was kind enough to wake up very early. But! I did to two things I'm proud of.
The first is I killed the Prisoner Horde in 3-1. I ran out of a doorway and got shot at by magic, but I couldn't see what the hell was shooting it at me. I went back up the stairs and up to the next level to look down, but I couldn't see what it was. I ran back down and whatever was shooting at me didn't seem to be there, I ran up and saw the big ass ball of corpses, but it must have been turned around. I attacekd it with my sword a few times and got it down to probably 20% health, but then it turned around and started hitting me and nearly killed me. I was able to run away and heal up, but when I tried to take it out from a distance with Soul Arrow the damage was crap. So I ran back up to the second floor and sniped it with my bow. Victory!
The other thing isn't as cool, but it still made me happy. I took out my first Crystal Lizard. I saw him before he saw me, got out my bow, and hit him. That didn't kill it, but when he tried to run away I got off a lucky shot and killed it. :)
I can't freakin' wait to play this tonight.

I'm at the point where I have nothing left to do other than kill False King. Sonuvabitch is hard! I think I'm going to grind for another 10 levels or so and have another go at him. I'm currently at lvl 90, so I think if I put another 10 or so into Vitality and Endurance, I'll be really fit and ready for him.
Also, there are never any blue soul signs there. I want to know what gives. I've invaded people on 1-4 and one guy even had TWO goddamn blue phantoms with him! I've never seen one single soul sign after the first 3 archers from penetrator's archstone. :(

You can target the tail specifically with the right stick lock-on, just like you could for Tower Knight's feet or Adjucator's cleaver.
I have been caught up in so many other games that poor Demon's Souls got pushed to the wayside. I keep dying in 5-2 which is making me all kinds of upset! Need to just finish that damn zone and get it overwith.

AFAIK, the only place to summon blue phantoms in 1-4 is just after Penetrator's Archstone. It's the only place I've seen them.

Doesn't summoning phantoms have something to do with your Soul Level? If you're much higher or much lower than those putting down their marker you just won't see them. I think.

I should be getting DS back from my buddy this week. I wanna kill Miralda for her armor, now that I have her axe.

I was supposed to play DS last night, but I got so enthralled with Windows 7 on my HTPC that I couldn't stop playing with it. I'm going to perform my due diligence with DS today.

Next time I play I'll probably be heading into 5-2. I want the Thief's Ring, which somehow I missed in 1-1, unless I put it into storage and forgot about it.

You should have gotten it when you first meet Ostrava. Unless you pulled a Spigot.:p

Yeah, that's what it says in the guide and online, and I know I saved him in 1-1 (though I don't recall seeing him since other than once in the Nexus). What did Spig do?

You missed the Cling Ring of all things early on. I think that's what you're getting heat for at this point!

I think it's on a platform in his area in 1-1 that you have to jump onto from the stairs leading down if I remember right.
