View Full Version : Far Crash 2

I've played about 2-3 hours of Far Cry 2. It's the most crashtastic program I think I've ever used. I've had 4 times where it just quit to Windows - no error message, nothing. I've had 1 time where I got the BSOD.
My video card drivers are up to date - my sound drivers are up to date - I guess there is more troubleshooting I'll get busy doing, memtest, etc, but overall it pisses me off greatly. Because of their checkpoint-based saved system, I have not progressed very far.
I haven't PC gamed much for the last two years - I built this system in February and so far it's worked just fine. Crysis and C&C 3 worked pretty well - no crashed. WoW, of all things, crashes occasionally.
I feel like you get fucked either way. I build an expensive PC and end up wasting a bunch of time troubleshooting and getting shit to work, and I get a great gaming experience. I can step it down a notch in terms of graphics and resolution, but I don't get any fucking hassles with hardware and drivers.
Pretty pissed. I was looking forward to this all day.

I haven't crashed once and I've even alt+tabbed like 15 times trying to copy my cd key to play multiplayer. Maybe having the most up to date driver is the problem? I've found that using a more stable driver rather than the newest driver is better for me.

I am typing this shit from my Blackberry before I hit the sack. memtest86+ is running. I've never used it before - it got 4 errors on the first pass, but the second time through, the same test produced no errors. Is this normal? I've never used memtest before. Is there an acceptable number of non-repéated errors? Damn, man. And I was just starting to have fun setting people on fire, too.

Back in my day we had achievements too, but they were called "unlocks". Not only did you achieve something, you were also rewarded with something that advanced and/or extended the gameplay. Fortunately for developers Microsoft has replaced those with achievements, something much easier for the developer to implement, albeit only useful for meaningless e-peen dick-waving.
Bring back the unlock, down with achievements. :) Oh, and kudos to the games like Uncharted that manage to combine achievements and unlocks into a whole greater than the sum of its parts. Mass Effect also managed this a few times.

Is there an acceptable number of non-repéated errors?Nope, you should never get any errors running MemTest. That said, if you get errors on a first pass and then no more for like a day of running, then I wouldn't be too worried. However, if it errors, it means something is wrong.

I was actually enraged by the lack of a quicksave. It's not like you ever get a tutorial hint. I've been PC gaming since I had to make a boot disk to run DOOM on my 386. I figured that since this game is multiplatform they had the same save scheme for every version.
Memtest ran all night without any further errors. I dunno. Nothing is overclocked.

I've put a couple hours in and haven't had a single issue. As a matter of fact about the only thing I thought while playing was how freakin good it looks in relation to how well it runs. I have everything maxed under DX10 at 1680x1050 at it never drops below 47fps, I think I'll bump it up to 1920x1080 and see how it runs. I'm using Vista 64 and a 9800GTX.
We will see how Fallout 3 turns out but so far I think this may have my "game of the year" vote.
Edit - Also if you hit ESC there is a save option in the menu.

Well, I've had a couple crashes from Far Cry 2, but it's not the game's fault. Apparently it's the first thing I've run that really pushes my system, so when I cracked my case open I realized just how hot my CPU heatsink is getting. Leaving my case open resulted in no more crashes and a cool heat sink. Apparently I'll need to fix that before I continue.
Improved airflow FTW!

Fowler, I'm really sorry to hear about your crashing issues. I played the game for about 4 hours straight yesterday without a single hitch.
Specs:
Wolfdale E8400
4GB RAM
8800 GTS 512 w/ 178.13 drivers
Vista x64
I had been running Omega drivers, and found that the official drivers resulted in significant framerate improvements.
Inspector Fowler
10-23-2008, 08:51 AM
I'm using the newest Nvidia drivers. I hope this doesn't end up like Battlefield 2 where I had to find a different video card driver every time they patched the game. I need to chechk my heat, but the case has good airflow- Crysis didn't overheat it at all. I let memtest go all night and it never did get any more errors. I will probably run it again tonight, though, after checking CPU temps while I play.Again, though - I have to say that when it's running it's gorgeous and actually fun to boot!

Especially when you play both versions on the same TV...they look identical. The PC version only pays off if you're running a resolution much higher than what you can obtain with your 360.
I have a 720p projector and I've done comparisons between games like Bioshock, Call of Duty 4, etc and the difference is negligible at that resolution. A little AA but other than that they look the same.

Not when your TV is a fixed resolution...plus unless you have a 2560x1600 30" display like I do you're playing it at 1920x1200 which is approx the max res for the XBox and PS3....1080p.

Inspector Fowler
10-23-2008, 11:40 AM
Platform arguments aside (no fighting in the war room, gentlemen...), I could have bought the game for any of the platforms it's available on. I chose the PC because none of my 360 owning buddies are getting it, I don't really like FPS games on the PS2 controller, and since my computer is pretty powerful, why not? I can run it at 16?? X 1050 and it looks great, I have almost every slider set to high. When it's running, it is smooth and looks absolutely beautiful. I like the look better than Crysis and it runs a truckload better.
But the crashes....man...it just goes straight to desktop. Not even an error message from Windows. Just my desktop. And, of course, the one BSOD, which is not a common sight for me these days.

So the 360 version of Far Cry 2 has 4xAA, AF and zero pop in? COD4 was the same on all platforms which is why it ran so well even on shitty PCs. As for Bioshock, the visuals are ridiculously good on DX10, if you've ever tried it.

My Nvidia drivers are the ones released on 10/15/08, those should be the newest ones, right?
I'm running an Intel Quad Core on a Gigabyte MoBo. The MoBo is one of their overbuilt supercooling ones. I have 4GB of 1066 RAM and a 512 MB 8800GTS. HD is a 250 GB 3/MB SATA. OS is Vista Home Premium 64 bit edition. I have nothing overclocked or tweaked.
Also - is there a utility that will help me track CPU and GPU temps? One that logs them like every 5 seconds or so or something? The utility that came with the mobo looks like it was programmed in 1995, and it never seemed to run very well or be very useful. Surely there is some kind of overclocker freeware out there that will help me figure out if heat is the problem?
Also - to all who pointed out the quicksave, thank you. I ran 2 missions back to back tonight - I unlocked a new safe house...right as I reached for the door, BAM! Crash. Had I not been quicksaving, there would be some computer debris flying around ;)

After playing this game I don't think I'll ever be able to go back to any other game's lame ass frag grenades.
On most games, you get a little bang and a bit of smoke. In Far Cry 2, you get a *BOOM* and debris flying everywhere. On a kind of related note, I love the way shotguns sound in this game too. This is how they should sound. Not the weak little bang you get on most games.

Son of a bitch. Still crashing ALL the time. At this point, graphics or not, I wish I'd just got it for the damn consoles.
I wouldn't go that far;) If you are like me, you are currently overwhelmed by all of the great games that have come out or soon will. You could simply divert your attention while a patch comes out and cross your fingers that it fixes your issues. Check official forums and make sure you are not the only one with issues (doubtful). I have Vista 64 with an 8800GT and no crashes. The only bug I have had so far is with mapping the use key to something besides E which makes it so you can't get off of machine gun placements. I have to use default (ugh). That is PC gaming for you. Pros and Cons. I've got Fallout 3 in the mail, and if that doesn't run on my PC I will be pissed. I can only hope I can take my own advice and be patient for a fix.

Ha ha, sadly OP is right for me. Game makes my processor overheat like a motherf*$3. To be clear, this is essentially a bug and I can play Crysis on very high DX9 without this happening. Guess I have to wait for a patch or something.

The game makes my proc overheat too, but if I pop the side of my case off, I'm fine.

Works fine here too. Never heard of a single game overheating hardware when others don't at the same time.

Go use Prime95 on your processor. If Far Cry 2 makes it overheat, that definitely will.

Could it not be a driver issue? The company may be tweaking the driver to maintain performance on a game-by-game basis...kind of a cheat, if you know what I mean.

What should a "normal" temp for your CPU(s) be? I've got a quad core Intel. When the temps get over 50C or so for any core, SpeedFan just shows a little flame symbol next to the temp, which makes me VERY nervous.

Depends on your CPU. The C2D's have a great tolerance level... so even at 60+ they will be okay. The 70-90 point is the alarming stage.
Awesome fact: the Geforce 8800 (G92) can stand temperatures upto 110*C.

I just uninstalled this game. I am severely pissed about it. It never, ever worked right. I realize that, for a certain percentage of PC gamers, some games never do work correctly, and that it's not feasible for PC developers to stop this, given the (essentially) infinite combinations of hardware, operating systems, and drivers that their customers will have.
It still disappoints me that a computer with good quality hardware and the absolute latest drivers can't simply play the game.
A little Google searching revealed to me that a very vocal group is having the same problem as me - some people swear it's only ATI users, others swear it's only Nvidia. Some swear the game won't work on Vista, others have the same crashing in XP. There seems to be no common thread, and so far, Ubisoft hasn't even acknowledge the problem in their support forums.
I will NOT wait for a patch. I will NOT keep troubleshooting THEIR bullshit. If Far Cry 2 makes it crash this often, why didn't/don't WoW, Crysis, Command and Conquer 3, etc?
I took a couple years away from "serious" PC gaming because I just couldn't afford to keep up. I was also disappointed with the amount of difficulty I had - some games installed and worked perfectly, others required an endless amount of "which driver should I use" and "have I prayed to the right gods today" bullshit. I see I haven't missed much.
Even though I feel that with many games, especially first person shooters, you get a much, much better experience on the PC, I don't plan on trying it anymore.
Sorry for the rant. I know most people are having an excellent time with this game, and that's cool, because the game itself KICKS ASS.

You should go talk to MagGnome about his 360 issues...perhaps you two could swap gaming devices ;)

You'll notice that I didn't rely on the ol' standby argument that consoles are super-reliable. :) My 360 has gone back to MS three times, and is now with a friend. I bought an Elite that is thus far working flawlessly. My PS3...well...I haven't bought any games that I've actually beaten for it. Valkeyeurueuauuea Chronicles will probably be the first one.
I guess the advantage of my 360s has been that they either work completely or they are dead completely - no drivers to fuss with, no wondering if I have some corrupted file or some other bullshit, etc. I guess that, as a homeowner with a full time job and a wife I enjoy seeing, I'd rather the machine just give me a huge middle finger and die than make me waste 10 hours trying to get ONE fucking game to work.

True...I think those are the times I fall out of pc gaming. I go through phases where I'm pro-console or pro-pc...usually happens when something goes terribly wrong with one or the other.
Thankfully, right now I'm in a nice place in-between...until my 360 dies or my graphics card in my pc dies.
I have to say, too, that this does make me want to wait before purchasing Far Cry 2...

is this thread also used for discussion of the game or is there another thread somewhere? I can't search because Far and Cry are only three letters long.
