I thought this thread was going to be about The Behemoth and their incompetant handling of the Castle Crashers patch. (I hate those bastards.)

A few people who have said they've done this said their accounts got entirely deleted.

Considering I now have things such as my Fable 2 LE attached to this gamertag, I don't want it deleted.

I just want to remove myself from automatic billing cycles so I'm forced to keep better track of my finances, so I'll be going the route of XBL cards now.

I had to cancel my credit card to get them to stop. Why the hell is there not an in system option? Gametap is the same way, why can I not just click a link like with Netflix or a WoW subscription?

So MS wants to keep us paying? I'm shocked. Shocked, I tell you! :)

Oh well...you can only get milk from the cow if you keep it in the barn. It's even better if you can charge the cow money to be in the barn while you advertise your cheese and butter products as well. Even better yet is if you force the cow to have an avatar of an idiot rag-doll human that it has to display to the world. :D

To my mind, automatic billing cycles are the best way to keep track of your finances. What better way than knowing EXACTLY when money is needed?

Because if your someone like me and your memory is not so good, you don't always remember those things, and can find yourself in very unpleasant situations if you're not careful.

But isn't that exactly the sort of thing you want to get better at? Avoiding it won't help :P

Start planning. Get a calendar and mark when money comes out, how much, and for what. Then - assuming you're on salary and make a consistent amount each pay period - mark how much you'll get paid on the appropriate days.

You don't get more organized finances by avoiding the problem, you have to tackle it head on. Keep those bank statements and go over them to see where your money goes.

OR, I can just use game cards from the store.

I can't cancel my xbox gold. I was told they would take away my xbox 360...or worse make it RRR...oh wait that happens automatically when the warranty expires...;)

Cancel Easily Online: If you decide not to continue your GameTap subscription, you can cancel online at any time from your profile page.

Those prepaid cards are definately the best way to go.

Now, I'm not so sure about Gold, but canceling a Silver account is damn near impossible, even if I haven't used it in years.

I actually recovered from this! All you have to do is input a gold subscription card on your xbox live gamertag website and boosh, it works.

Buy XBL Cards, not pay with your credit card. Then you'll be fine.

What happens with your XBL ID if you have a prepaid card and it runs out? Do you degrade from Gold to Silver? If so, I'd actually be inclined to pick up one.

I've been a Silver customer for ages, because I don't play multiplayer, but for some (Too Human, Fable II) I'm interested in trying it, so I'd actually be willing to go Gold if I can easily downgrade back to Silver.

Kelegacy

Yes, you go back to Silver. That is what happened to me last year. I'll probably resubscribe eventually. Gotta play Gears with the boys, afterall. :)

Ditto. I'm amazed at how long it's been since I felt it would be worthwhile, TBH.. maybe Fable II and/or Gears will change that.

I've been a silver member since my sub ran out last December. Haven't felt the need to upgrade since.

However, I subscribed for Gears 1, so I may for Gears 2.

I forget the user, but don't you all remember the story from EvAv about the guy who had his house broken into, and among things like this truck, his 360 was stolen? The thief had hooked it up to the internet, and was using the EvAver's credit card to buy LOTS of MS points.

When he called in to cancel it, they couldn't even cancel it right away! They said the card would stay on the account until the end of the billing cycle. Meanwhile, the thief is still spending money. If I recall correctly, he even threatened to do a chargeback with his credit card and Microsoft threatened him with some kind of action if he did it. But maybe the last part was somebody else...I dunno.

Anyway. They make it damned hard to remove your cc info, because without that, they don't have an automatic customer every year, and you can't impulse shop for MS points.

Just buy a card and input the code. Your billing will switch to prepaid and when that time runs out, you're account will go silver. Even with a card on file I had to reconfirm CC payment to get my Live account running again after my prepaid card expired. They don't auto-renew.

I use my CC for my Gold subscription, and cards for points. (Except in a pinch, where I've used the CC once or twice.)

I actually like the recurring payments - Microsoft usually shoots me an e-mail a month in advance, and then the week before the payment actually happens. It's entirely easy to keep track of. Since I don't see myself getting rid of Gold anytime soon, it's just the easiest way for me to deal with it.

You can call in and get a lapsed account converted to silver now. You must have any/all ID information they might request to prove that it is indeed your account.

First time I tried this I didn't have the expired CC number so they wouldn't do it for me. Thing is, instead of telling me they wouldn't do it because I didn't have all of the information we went back and forth for 30 minutes about why it couldn't be done. I finally demanded to talk to a supervisor which she denied and eventually she said she talked to the supervisor herself and that they could not do it because I had not fully identified myself. Well wtf? Why didn't you tell me that 30 minutes ago?

I dug around my files until I found the old cc number, called back, got a different operator, had the automatic gold resubscription charges dropped from my account and the account changed to a silver. Took about 5 minutes.

Don't give up if you've lost your account this way and want it back.

I would really like to have MS fix the wallet access controls. Right now I have it set up so I have to enter a short code to sign in to Live. I'd prefer to have auto-sign-in on and just have it request password re-entry if I tried to buy something or add points.

...

That was a scary story, but apparently not quite scary enough for me to remove my card for buying points.

In addition to all the reasons stated, I'm for using a prepaid card for Live since you can almost always find a deal on those compared to what it costs to pay straight up.
