If you had told me 5 years ago that we were on the verge of a full on Karaoke game revolution, I would have said you were crazy. If you had told me that craze had nothing at all to do with the Japanese I would have had you locked up. Well here we are in late 2008 and games that come with little plastic microphones are all the rage, and none of them come from a Japanese development house.

Next up on the hit parade is Lips, Microsoft's in-house singing game first demoed at this year's E3. Set to debut on November 18th, the package will include the game and two wireless microphones for $69.99. The mics will also double as motion sensitive controllers, which will feature prominently in several game modes. There will also be versus battles, a 'back up mode' in which two additional players can use regular 360 controllers to simulate percussion instruments, and the popular 'Freestyle Mode', in which any DRM-free mp3 you have on your connected music player can be used in the game (albeit without any on-screen lyrics to sing to).

As for the game's tracklisting, here you go:

a-ha - “Take on Me” Nirvana - “In Bloom”
Alicia Keys - “No One”
Peter Bjorn and John - “Young Folks”
Aly & AJ - “Potential Break Up Song”
Queen - “Another One Bites the Dust”
Avril Lavigne - “Complicated”
R.E.M. - “The One I Love”
Ben E. King - “Stand by Me”
Radiohead - “Fake Plastic Trees”
Beyoncé - “Irreplaceable”
The Ramones - “I Wanna Be Sedated”
Blondie - “Call Me”
Rascal Flatts - “Stand”
Chris Brown - “With You”
Rihanna - “Umbrella”
Coldplay - “Yellow”
Roxette - “Listen to Your Heart”
Depeche Mode - “Personal Jesus”
Sara Bareilles - “Love Song”
Destiny’s Child - “Survivor”
Sheryl Crow - “Soak Up the Sun”
Dido - “White Flag”
Taylor Swift - “I’m Only Me When I’m With You”
Duffy - “Mercy”
The Bangles - “Walk Like an Egyptian”
Duran Duran - “Hungry Like the Wolf”
The Fray - “Over My Head (Cable Car)”
John Denver - “Take Me Home, Country Roads”
The Jackson 5 - “ABC”
Johnny Cash - “Ring of Fire”
The Police - “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic”
Leona Lewis - “Bleeding Love”
The Raveonettes - “Love in a Trashcan”
Lil’ Mama - “Lip Gloss”
Trace Adkins - “Ladies Love Country Boys”
Lupe Fiasco (featuring Matthew Santos) - “Superstar”
Weezer - “Island in the Sun”
Maroon 5 - “Makes Me Wonder”
Young MC - “Bust a Move”

As is the trend nowadays, Lips will be buttressed by regular digital downloads for purchase on XBLM.

Makes me wish I could sing...I love GH...want to play RB...i'm a late comer into the toy instrument genre but unfortunately I stop at Karaoke. My drunk days of doing karaoke are long gone.

I have a few friends who are really big into karaoke/singing, I'll have to let them know about this. Not really interested in having a home version myself though. Karaoke only works for me when I'm out at a bar, and I'm too drunk to care what I'm doing in public. :D

I wonder how Lips does with metal.

I'm interested, at least for my girlfriend and I to have some fun. The song list is a little wonky. Taylor Swift? I think she stinks, even for a country singer.

Needs more cowbell. And 80s music.

Does anyone know if these mics can be used in RB? IF so, I might get it.

I enjoy singing (even if I'm bad, it's something I can do with no one is home) but not enough to get a game for it. Unless that is, the wireless mics work with RB :D.

Well if these mics work the same way as the wireless headsets, then in theory, yeah they should work in RB.

My guess is they don't yet, but RB2 will be patched to support them. Which may be a reason to get it myself.

They should put that on the Lips box. Works with Rock Band. Wireless!

What I wonder is are they going to charge $2 a song too. I mean, it really should be less since if you buy it in RB you can also play guitar/bass and drums, not just the vocals.

After Rock Band 2, that measly 40 song set list does nothing for me.

It's a better list than I expected, but I still don't have any interest in a karaoke game. The Xbox Music Mixer (and a few drunken parties...did you know you could record your peformances?) was more than enough of that, thanks!

This doesn't do an awful lot for me.

But then I'm not the one they need to convince to pick up a 360.

Um, Doc, Lips is developed by iNiS, best known for Elite Beat Agents, a Japanese development house. Also, one of the two major karaoke franchises, Karaoke Revolution, is from Konami.

I love singing in RB simply because when I'm playing with others that means I'm the only one using a real instrument. I'm not expecting this game to do too well, although it does seem to have a lot of chick friendly tracks.
