View Full Version : XBLA size limit is dead
Portal: Still Alive is a 629 megabyte download. So apparently the old size limit no longer applies, or at least they'll make an exception for games that are sufficiently awesome. The description does note that "This game requires the Xbox 360 hard drive."

The limit was a bad idea to start with.

The limit wasn't the bad idea, the bad idea was the "optional" hard drive and figuring they could get away with a pissy 64MB memory card. The limit was just damage control after the fact.

Seriously? You're spinning this negatively that they finally removed the hard drive requirement?

I'd say it's the latter and not former. Valve got to break the rules with the Orange Box too. Games are limited to 65 achievements total, MS allowed Valve to include 100 in OB.

They've been breaking the limit since about a year after launch. This can only be better for us, after all more game for same price sounds good to me. I do agree that having the HDD as optional is one of the dumbest decisions MS has ever made.

Ironically, you call yourself a Trophy whore. Another thing Sony didn't consider... right?
As long as it changes for the better, who cares when it was considered? You personally should know this more then anyone considering your recent "whore" thread.

Hopefully the limit is gone for good. With the 60GB HDDs out there now, there's no excuse for it.

For what? I know they raised the limit, but I don't remember them breaking it before.

In before obligatory "WTF!? I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO BUY!" comments. I agree with you though.
Edit: Ondo: I guess your right, usually it was a single game that prompted them to raise it though.
So Destructoid has a brief article about this here (http://www.destructoid.com/we-warned-you-portal-still-alive-breaks-xbla-size-record-108762.phtml). Most interesting bit is the blurb from Aaron Greenburg from TGS about the cap:
"We don't want to limit developers from a creative standpoint," he told us. "So if they want to create bigger, more immersive-style games for digital distribution, [we] absolutely want to support that."
"At the same time, you want to also not forget about efficiency," he warns. "There are ways you can make your games smaller and more efficient and not impact the experience."
So how often have they raised the cap? It started at 50MB, and I remember it being raised to 150MB a bit after the 256MB memory cards came out.
Looking through Google, I see it got raised to 250MB, then 350. Frankly, once it will no longer fit on a memory card I don't see the point of having a cap at all. Also, they have ignored the cap before, for Symphony of the Night - which was around 100MB when the cap was still 50MB.

On one hand this is good, since it will allow more potential for bigger games like Portal. On the other it means I'm that more likely to fill up my pweeny 20g HDD and have to pay extortionate costs to upgrade.

Nope. The PSN version has the full CD quality version of the soundtrack due to the lack of limit. Also, Siren was about 10GB.

They named it Arcade. The idea is that arcade would have small arcade games. You know, like you'd find in an arcade. You shouldn't need more then 50-100mb for a simple arcade game.
Now that it's more of a non-specific DLC service, the cap is gone. Mind you, not too many of the games coming out now would still be considered 'arcade games'.

Consider what? A limit they've clearly decided to ignore?

I think he was referring to the lack of an included/standard storage device.

I wish that more games were allowed to break Microsoft's ridiculous limits. For example: Bionic Commando: Rearmed would have been much nicer with animated cutscenes and voice acting.

That's the one thing they didn't consider. They made shoddy hardware and they didn't make a hard drive standard. That's the two major complaints made against them this generation.
Duke's post sounds like he's criticizing Microsoft for this decision, not the earlier one.
