Hello,

I have been on a cartoon kick recently but I have now officially run out of good shows to watch. I'm hoping someone here can help me find some new content. In the past few years I have watched:

Cowboy Bebop
Naruto (up to most recent episodes)
Batman Beyond
Justice League
The Tick
Avatar The Last Air Bender

Yes I know some of those are anime and there are folks out there that say those aren't cartoons. But nuts to those folks, if its drawn and animated its a cartoon in my book and its easier to use a general description.

I liked Cowboy Bebop, thought Naruto (especially Shippuden) was fantastic. Thought Batman Beyond was so-so at best and Justice League was pretty decent for the most part. Avatar was much better then I expected it to be and The Tick was hilarious.

So given those preferences can anyone suggest a new cartoon for me to watch?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Samurai Champloo, made by the Cowboy Bebop guys. Great show.

Full Metal Alchemist.
And FMA: Brotherhood (http://www4.funimation.com/video/?page=show&b=280) is really good, too.

Altho to be fair, I keep hearing great things about the Brave & the Bold series (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman:_The_Brave_and_the_Bold). . .

If you liked Bebop give Outlaw Star a watch. Or Trigun.

If you're looking for action...
Outlaw Star
Bleach (Good luck catching up, though. Seems to go on forever.)
Storm Hawks (I've only seen a few episodes on Cartoon Network. Primarily for kids, but there's some simple fun to be had.)

If you're looking for comedy...
Futurama
Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law (Funny stuff, but less than 40 episodes at ~15 minutes each.)

If you're looking for wtf?...
Ghost in the Shell, Stand Alone Complex (Forget the movie, S.A.C. is where it's at. But you have to pay attention.)

Samurai Jack is awesome as well as Venture Bros.
Batman Brave & the Bold has some great moments.

Inyuasha can at times be fun.

If you like fantasy and character development you have to watch The Twelve Kingdoms. (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=26) I seem to mention that in every vaguely anime related thread but it needs repeating. It's that good.

Based on what you listed you need to give Bleach (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=2369)a try too.

Forget the movie? Their is less talking in the movie than an entire episode of Stand alone complex. Sure you could pay attention...but why? They shit they go on about is really not very interesting. The movie on the other hand is subtle, beautifully animated and very cool.

and that's cute and all that your looking for "cartoons" but if your just looking for pretty much the funniest show on TV, then yeah, your going to watch The Venture Bros.

Exo-Squad
Gargoyles
Darkwing Duck
Transformers: Beast Wars

Someone already mentioned Samurai Jack, but I want to second that recommendation. Also, if you haven't watched the follow up series to Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, I would recommend watching that before any of the others.

Have you seen the Batman Beyond movie? By far, the best part of the series. Integrated really well with The Animated Series (which is also far superior to Beyond).

ugh... Darkwing Duck. Why would he keep Launchpad in his employ? I mean obvious Scrooge got tired of his shitty piloting and canned his ass. A fucking lobotomized monkey would be a better pilot. I always hated that guy. plus his duck bill..chin? looked like a ball sack on his face.

The Critic and Home Movies are two of my all time favorites that I don't think were mentioned yet.

Also, the recent newcomer on FX "Archer" is off to a pretty good start as well.

Gotta second... errr third... fifth? One way or another, I have to support Venture Bros, especially if you enjoy The Tick (one of my all time personal favorites). Venture Bros is simply one of the best animated series ever produced, and there isn't a single episode that hasn't made me laugh myself stupid. It's good shit™.

As for the Ghost in the Shell debate... I have a lot of nostalgic love for the movie, but if I'm being honest, I think Mamoru Oshii is a tiresome director. There. I said it. It's out in the open. Part of that opinion probably stems from the fact that I bought Avalon, and I doubt I'll ever forgive him for that shit-fucking-travesty-of-a-shit-gargling-film. On the other hand, Stand Alone Complex is an exceptional series that just flat-out feels like a better adaptation of Shirow Masamune's original work, and I can't recommend it enough. If you like a good detective drama, or the idea of cyborgs fighting terrorists, SAC is where it's at.

Because I don't think anyone has mentioned it yet, you really owe it to yourself (unless you hate you) to watch The Venture Bros.

It's not just a great cartoon, it is very possibly the best show on TV at the moment.

Super Jail! Bizarre as fuck.

And the retro shows are always great. Like picking up a DVD of He-Man, Inhumanoids, or something like that. I need to get those for my son for when he's old enough. Like the old TMNT show.

I don't watch many cartoons outside of Phineas and Ferb and the Disney preschool channels (which I oddly enough don't hate) so I'm out of the loop big time.

Futurama
*Edit* Oh, and I'll second Rocko's Modern Life, as well (mentioned below).

Also Space Ghost: Coast to Coast, if that counts. (Though the later episodes were way too "aquateen" for my tastes.)

As for anime, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Samurai Champloo, which were mentioned. GITS:SAC also has a second season, which you'll find under GITS:SAC:2nd Gig.

Will come back to this and post a few more later...

If you liked Rocko's Modern life type cartoons, Phineas and Ferb. The Perry the Platypus and Dr. Doofenshmirtz confrontations are great. I can't think of a villain I like more than Dr. Doofenshmirtz. I'm guessing Spigot is a big fan too.

To name a few that weren't mentioned already:

Gurren Lagann is perhaps the ultimate big robot show, and worth your attention if you like anything with action in it.

Detroit Metal City is hilarious. It's not as grim as Metalocalypse, but a lot wackier (in the same vein as Spinal Tap).

A lot of people seem to like Hajime no Ippo, but I don't like the DBZ/Naruto format of anime where single battles are stretched out over a number of episodes. But since you're caught up with Naruto, I think you would like this boxing anime.

Typical print > visual media conversion so no, it's worse. If you didn't like the manga don't bother with the anime.

I second the Death Note recommendation, although I have to recommend the manga over the series.

I watched 3 or 4 Trigun episodes and 2 Batman: Brave and the Bold episodes and its looking like neither series will be for me. I like comedy just fine but I'm really not looking for this kind of show. I've seen Venture Bros and think its great, but right now I'm more interested in an action drama show. I didn't even realize that till after I watched Trigun.

I had previously seen the first 2 movies of Ghost in the Shell. Having never watched the show I was mostly just watching it for the animation which was nifty but I really didn't understand any of the obviously complex backstory. It sounds like the series might be more my speed. That and Bleach which I have of course heard about before but know precisely nothing about. The comment that if you like Naruto you probably like Bleach is encouraging though.

I cannot recommend Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex enough. The 2nd gig is even better.

The movies were great in their own right but the series is completely different in terms of pace, focus and story-telling. Just amazing.

If you like that sort of existentialist drama in your anime, there are other shows to note in the genre, like Ergo Proxy.

If action is more your thing, check out Appleseed 2004 and Appleseed: Ex Machina. Code Geass (two seasons) is very entertaining.

I also second (or third/fourth) the recommendation for Death Note.

If one is to suggest Anime Fantasy, then I have to suggest Record of Lodoss war. It's story kinda feels like "Wait we need a plot! We need a magic item and have the babe get captured, stat!" later on, but still an awesome Fantasy series.

Just avoid the chronicles of the brave knight or whatever the spinoff was called. It's pure shit.

It is an action drama. It starts getting serious after 5 or 6 eps, if I recall correctly. Also Star Wars: Clone Wars, while not quite as great as the original, is still really good. But skip the theatrical movie, that wasn't good.

Clone High, Frisky Dingo, Xtacles, Venture Bros, Archer, and I've just started watching Roughnecks on Netflix. The animation is a bit dated but it's still pretty solid story telling and it's cgi isnt not a deal breaker.

Also Star War Clone Wars. Movies, no but both sets of the animations are pretty solid as well. I'd avoid that Clones War animated movie, but even that was better than the live action movies. Well maybe by only a little bit now that I think about Capote the Hutt. :(

Marvel and DC have also been putting out several decent feature movies.

It's pumped up with (Japanese mafia style) machismo & bravado, almost to the point of parody, which would normally turn me off of a series. But in the end, it's really about friendship, family, trust and betrayal. Though the story can be pretty ridiculous at times, the overall thread built something that I could appreciate. That, and the soundtrack is pretty excellent (by Tsuneo Imahori (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsuneo_Imahori), who also did the Trigun soundtrack).

Watched the series back on TechTV, eventually picked up the soundtrack and both OSTs.

Well I just finished Bleach (or rather I am now current with the show at episode 260). As you can guess that means I watched an awful lot of it and thought it was fantastic. I'm not sure if I like Bleach or Naruto more at this point. I think I like bleach more when its dealing with their main storyline and Naruto more when Bleach goes off onto tangents (which seems to happen quite a bit in the second half of the series).

At this point I'm starting Ghost in the Shell (only saw 1 episode but its clearly of a whole different caliber then either Bleach or Naruto). There have been an awful lot of good suggestions here, actually too many to sort through properly heh. So what I'm asking now is for folks to pinpoint shows that are similar to Bleach, Naruto, and/or Ghost in the Shell with emphasis on action rather then purely drama driven.
