SUPER EDIT: IT'S OUT, GO DOWNLOAD IT

Perfect Dark is being remade for XBLA with sweet multiplayer and HD graphics. I'd peg it with either a late February or early March release *crosses finger*, and it's going to be fucking sweet.

EDIT:

Trailer from X10
http://www.rare.co.uk/movieplayer/

Also... March release date, $10, 8 player online multi, 1080p @ 60 FPS constant.

Having played Perfect Dark Zero and having enjoyed it somewhat (though, I did fight the controls), why is it people bag on Zero, but love the original so much? I haven't played the original, but isn't it just going to play like Zero? Is it level design? Story? What makes the original so much better and isn't there a chance that the update will ruin it? Or even just the change from an N64 controller to a 360 controller?

The original is probably the most comprehensive, fully-featured FPS of all time.. I can't really think of a game that offers the amount of options that PD does. And no, going to the 360 controller will only make this game controls 3x better.

I think Rare is really doing a remake the right way with PD for XBLA.

Perfect Dark and Goldeneye were very, very much a different pace of shooter than PDZ. Goldeneye especially was the rare exception where a console shooter out-innovated PC shooters of its time, with thoughtful, detailed gameplay. PDZ threw all that out the window.

I think it's pretty clear from the port they did of Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie that they're not going to pooch this one.

Zero felt like a completely different, average shooter which borrowed some of the PD names.

The real reason Zero gets a lot of hate is because virtually nobody who worked on PD was around to create PDZ so it lacked any of the stuff we liked from PD.

Perfect dark for me was a such a huge improvement over Goldeneye. It did so many little things right, and the multiplayer was the best I had played at the time.

PDZ on the other hand had great graphics, but that's about it. The story was cool, but the gameplay was actually a step back for the genre. There was one spot in the jungle where you walked into an area, where you can see guards, and they don't know you're there, then you walk past a set point on the ground and they ALL immediately know where you are and start shooting you like crazy. The game is filled with lazy programming like that.

And the MP? Oh my god it is so much worse then the original. My main beef was with how much damage it took to kill somone. I shot someone with three or four clips to the body before they dropped. Sometimes It took two to three shots to the head to drop someone, depending if they had armor on.
It just made the MP matches painful to play. In short, it sucked.

PDZ was a good/average single player FPS launch title, marred with a pathetic MP mode.

So many awesome deaths where I would be running unarmed from an opponent and see a gun on the floor, only to do a 180 and run the other way when I realized the weapon in front of me could be a sneaky Dragon.

Also, the K7 remains the finest automatic rifle in the history of videogames.

GoldenEye had a better, more consistent campaign. The multi in PD is still something to aspire to. I put my hours into PD, though. I got every medal in the shooting range. I don't know how many of you cats can lay claim to that.

I have a lot of fond memories of Perfect Dark. My buddies and I played it for hours on end. The Anti-Coop mode (I forget the name) was pretty fun, and the multiplayer was incredible at the time. It's still one of my favorite FPS, and one of the few that I've ever gotten really into.

Edit - I wonder if they will spell "Facility" right this time? :p

my ex-brother in law and i used to play this game for HOURS before Sunday dinners at the inlaws house. It was great, the AI in the multiplayer maps was awesome.

PDZ... omg it was horrible. For many many reasons. For one, the controls were BAD, for a n64 game to have superior controls is just sad. They also treated you like you'd never played PD or a FPS before, FOLLOW THE LINES. The story, ugh. The graphics... half the time you wouldn't even be able to tell there was a enemy infront of you and if there was moving to do anything was impossible. I got rid of that game quick, and i bought it at launch. what a pos.

Robin, to the Youtube-mobile!!

You could use the delay in activating the Laptop Guns secondary fire (it folds up and goes off screen). Face the back wall of the range, activate the secondary mode and as soon as the gun is off screen cancel the challenge and immediately start up a different one. Time it right and the challenge starts as you throw the laptop sentry onto the wall. It'll shoot all the targets for you and you don't need to do a damn thing.

The only game I've played that even comes close is Halo 3. And even with it's map editing options, it still falls short. Kinda sad that modern FPS' can't match the options of a decade and a half old piece of software.

There were several maps in Perfect Dark that were straight from Goldeneye, and they didn't change the names on any of those.

I still think it was a misspelling. Either that or just very odd, as the name "Felicity" doesn't make any sense.

I wanna say Perfect Dark was the first game to introduce the adrenaline pill, where time slowed down. That shit was absolutely fantastic back in the day. Charging into a room and mowing down 20 bad guys before even one could get off a shot. It's done a lot now of course, last game I remember was CoD:MW2, which exaggerated it even more.

I think what also set it apart was that the AI was really well constructed. Even better than Goldeneye IMO. Perfect Dark was such an obsession for me, and when PDZ game out I was ecstatic, but then really.....really disappointed.:(

Perfect Dark did have that, but it was Max Payne that put "bullet time" on the map. Pretty much every game that has had it since is riffing off of Max Payne/The Matrix.

Did anyone ever understand why there were controls in that game to close your eyes. It wasn't in the instructions manual but if you crouched and pressed the down C button again your character would close their eyes.

Was this their secret method of stopping screen cheating back in the day. It will be awesome playing this again, without my friend and I building a huge cardboard divider across the screen like we used to.

I'm not the only one that did that right?

Yes the Farsight gun was the cheapest weapon in video game history. It didn't matter if you were standing still or running down a hall. You were dead. Me and my friends vowed to never play with that gun cause all it turned out to be was a race to the Farsight gun. Who ever got there first won.

Other crap we always turned off:

N-bombs
Poison knives

Both of those were bugged. I hated how you would get hit by a poison knife, die, respawn and still be poisoned and woozy.

Knowing xbox live, every custom game will be nothing but laptop guns, n-bombs, poison knives, and that gun that turns into a proxy mine when you throw it.

I am equally disappointed in the lack of system link functionality. Fortunately my friends and I have plenty of Gold accounts to spare, but it's still a kick in the ass.

If I had to pick one feature that makes the XBLA version better than the original, it'd have to be the significantly more fluid switch between primary and secondary fire. Either that or letting you cycle weapons both ways without having an awkward button combo.

Also, forgot just how punishing the game could be, I screwed up G5: Infiltration a few times because one guard kept switching spawns and always made it to the alarm.

I downloaded this yesterday. Holy shit is it amazing to see PD running this smoothly. The new textures are great, and hearing that soundtrack again is stirring up so many memories with each new tune.

The voice acting really does stand out as being incredibly corny now... I initially thought they re-recorded Joanna because she doesn't sound the same at all, but I do think it might just be the compression on the old cart that makes her sound different. The rest of the voices sound exactly as I remember them.

It's amazing how much easier this game is then it's not running at like 15 frames/sec.
