What video game characters do you really hate and why?

I understand that. Truth is that these are purely my opinions. A players connection to a particular character is what's really going to leave that lasting impression. I'm very much in agreement with what you say in regards to Freeman because as I mentioned, I adore the Half Life series. I was simply putting it in a very sterile, non-emotional context.

Basically, in regards to the Free man, I can personally see the validity of both sides of the argument. Simply depends on which angle you choose to look at it from.

I agree with you fully. Gordon may never talk, but he interacts as we interact with the world. And it's clear, through all the NPC dialogue, that Gordon is respected (or feared depending on who you are listening to) and makes his mark on the world believably. In the end I know a lot more about him than I do many other video game heroes. I daresay he's more fleshed out than some movie action heroes.

What's more disconcerting about the game's characters is the truly horrific voice acting found throughout. Zak basically sounds like a reject from the show Will & Grace.

Definitly Otis. Oh god, I still relish my first playthrough of Dead Rising in Survival Mode. Finally getting a chance to end that annoying prick's life was one of the most satisfying moments of gaming history.

Also, I'm going to stand up for Duke Nukem. I know he's a complete rip off of several popular movie characters, but to me, that's what makes him so great. He's the ultimate action movie cliche', this larger than life personality with an ego big enough to have it's own gravitational pull. Sort like the Last Action Hero, only more iconic. In my opinion, the persona is basically a characature of the FPS genre and it's penchent for barrowing heavily from the action movie industry. I'm probably projecting alot of this and kinda doubt so much thought went into the character, but I can still see it's relavence.

See, I found Roman to be totally self-aware and insecure, and that's why he was acting out. He basically admits this later in the game, which made his actions up to that point even more believable. He is a flawed guy and ultimately not cut out for being a gangster.

I've been reading this thread, and I've noticed that many times people are choosing characters that were made well, but that they just didn't like whereas I think the worst characters ever are from games that simply had no characterization at all, or had extremely shallow characterization.

In very simple games, like Cooking Mama, there is not really a need for characterization, but it would HELP. Look at how much the King of the Cosmos brings to Katamari Damacy.

Still, bad characterization is often worse than having nothing at all, and when I read the thread title, I immediately thought about the infamously annoying Otis just like so many others.

Nishiki, Yakuza. (spoilers for the whole game)

At the start of the game Nishiki kills a yakuza boss who was trying to rape one of his friends, Yumi, and another of his friends, Kazuma, takes the fall for it in his place. Yumi is so traumatised by the event that she loses her memory and eventually goes into hiding. One friend in prison and another missing because of some yakuza peice of trash thought he could take whetever he wanted. Sounds like some pretty good motivation to want to bring down the crime families.

That's what I thought when Nishiki reappeared as a member of the Dojima clan and someone had stolen 10 billion yen from them. Tearing them apart from the inside, right? Yakuza scum messed up the lives of his friends, so this is his revenge.

If only. As the story goes on it turns out that not only was the missing money part of a plot for Nishiki to become a crime boss but that he wants to destroy Kasuma because he was jealous of him. Nishiki secretly loved Yumi but she loved Kasuma, so Nishiki's out to prove that his dick is bigger. He gets a dumb tattoo. He learns some kung fu. He acts like a prat. Heck, Kasuma took the fall for Nishiki so he could look after his sick sister, but still Nishiki wants to ruin him. It's impossible to empathise with the guy, he's just an outright asshole.

Nishiki could have been great, one of those guys who seems to be a villian but turns out he was doing the right thing all along. Instead he was a dumbass.

Also, the pig guy with fart pants in Beyond Good and Evil.
