Sonic The Hedgehog has been voted the most popular game character of all time in a poll at the London Games Festival this week, according to UK retail magazine MCV (http://www.mcvuk.com/news/32104/Sonic-named-most-popular-games-character-of-all-time).
The spiky blue hedgehog beat out the likes of Super Mario and Lara Croft in the survey of over 500 UK gamers.
Follow the link to find a breakdown of the top 10 as voted for at the show this week!
Is Sonic the greatest? Or are Londoners just weird! What would be your choice?

A survey of 500 UK gamers does not a definitive ruling make.

Huh. Maybe he was just higher on the list than Mario, so people saw him first? Or maybe it has something to do with how Nintendo is focusing on their stable of characters significantly less now in favor of a more minimalist presentation for their games?

Ryo Hazuki for me that man was wood in pixel form. "I should probably buy another."

Yeah I know Sega was more popular in other parts of the world than the US (Master System).
But Sonic is my favorite too.

Sonic?!?
Sonic has got to be one of the least compelling video game characters I have ever played as. His games can be fun, but he is still an annoying furry.
Carl Johnson and Max Payne remain my favorite videogame characters to date.

I loves me some Sonic. The art style in that series is the bomb.

Sonic 1, 2, and 3 were the best. Every other Sonic game fails.
Also: agreed with Sandman.

Sonic 1, 2, and 3 were the best. Every other Sonic game fails.
Sonic 2 is one of the greatest platformers ever created.
As for the rest being fail, have you played the DS Sonic Rush games? They are excellent.

I think we need a recount. Sonic, #1? I smell something shady.
Also, how did Mega Man not make that list? Niko Bellic??? He'll be around for another couple months and then be forgotten.

This thread should be retitled "Sonic Voted Most Popular Game Character Ever According to a Relatively Small Sampling of Irrelevant Humans".

I am surprised. I would have expected Mario first followed by Sonic second.

It depends. How old are the people being surveyed?
If they are too young for the NES/SMS era, then they probably didn't experience as much Mario mania. Super Mario Bros. and SM3 were the games that defined the Mario image, imo.
SNES had Super Mario World, but as a launch/bundled title, maybe they didn't play it as much either. For instance, if they got into games around the time of Sonic 2, Mario wouldn't make many notable appearances for quite some time.
I certainly wouldn't have picked Sonic over Mario, but Sonic would still have come in 2nd.
And since when is Lara Croft even in the same league?
Edit: Nevermind. These people have no business being allowed to vote on this, I mean C'MON:
7. Max Payne (4 per cent)
9. Niko Belic (Grand Theft Auto series) (2 per cent)
10. Blanka (Street Fighter) (1 per cent)
Who in the hell would choose them? Max Payne...I can sort of understand, but not really. Probably because the movie was just released and it's all they could think of. But Niko and Blanka? Do the people who voted for them even play games? :p

Can a character that hasn't had a good game (on his own) in 15 years be considered all that great?

When I first saw the headline, I was afraid this was referencing one of those GameFAQs character battles.
Probably a little over 500 people from a country smaller than Oregon? For shame.

I know, right? If you were going to pick someone from SF...wouldn't it at least be Ryu, Chun Li, or even Ken? But Blanka? I cast my vote for Balrog...because why the hell not. It makes as much sense. :D

Lies, damned lies, and statistics (hence, surveys). :) If it's accurate, I'm quite surprised the #1. Quite.

So, what do you think the answer would be if run by an equivalent mag in the US?

I'm pretty sure if you repeated the poll in the United States, in just about any city, Mario would easily take #1. We were playing SMB3 on the TV in the front room of the CS club space once, and people just walking by were sticking their heads in the door to say, "Is that Mario? Cool!"

I get that reference. I can't believe I do, but I get that reference.
I just want to say that Oasis is the best band to ever come out of England!
I feel like my nationality is being attacked, and yet I can't defend the Oasis choice. Oasis are alright. Some of the time. Maybe.
But Sonic? Sonic is awesome. I grew up to Sonic. And yes, the Sonic Rush games are amazing.
