LucasArts and BioWare are teaming up to create an epic Star Wars MMO that will make everyone forget about Galaxies.

http://www.colonyofgamers.com/images/newsimages/SW-TOR-logo.jpg

The MMO takes place 300 years after the first KOTOR II, which puts it about 3,500 years before the film. You can choose between two factions, the Galactic Republic or the re-energized Sith Empire. You can also align yourself as a Dark or Light Side character in either situation. Two classes have been revealed: Jedi and Sith, both of which can use lightsabers and the Force early on.Source - Massively (http://www.massively.com/2008/10/21/star-wars-mmo-announced-as-the-old-republic/), Joystiq (http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/21/star-wars-the-old-republic-mmo-unveiled/)

I have never been into MMO's but I was in the Galaxy beta as my first and really only experience with them, so that might explain it. If this is good I would definitely be interested. I think it would take a Star Wars MMO to get me into the genre.

The MMO takes place 300 years after the first KOTOR II...

What the fuck is the first KOTOR II?

Either way, like I said in that other thread, I would have rather had another single player RPG.

...and what does this mean for Mass Effect II? I can't be asked to wait longer.

Star Wars deserves a good MMO. The potential is there, we just need the proper execution.

I guess Penny Arcade was right then.

This is very much a wait and see for me right now. Far too early to make any real comment on it yet. I mean it's only very early production now, so there's definitely a lot more to come. It was very nice to see them to commit to a date of 'When it's done'. At least you know it'll have time to get beyond the potential of being good phase.

What the fuck is the first KOTOR II?
Clearly this means that they'll be remaking KOTOR II, and the new version will cover events that take place a bit later than anything in the first version.

It's the only logical explanation.

Absolutely nothing. This is the first project of their Austin, Texas studio, so it shouldn't affect the work being done in Canada.

As soon as Bioware explains how they will be keeping the population of Jedi down....and by down, I mean like 10-15% of the total population of each server can only be Jedi, then I might be interested.

Galaxies has left a bad taste in my mouth....like cheap tequilla.

I don't follow.
Well, referring to the first KOTOR II implies there will be a second KOTOR II - presumably a remake. And since they specified that the MMO takes place 300 years after the first KOTOR II, presumably this second KOTOR II covers a slightly different timeframe, or there would have been no need to specify.

Or they may have just made a weird mistake.

Why would they have to do that? They are using a pretty unexplored section of Star Wars mythology, why can't there be a billion Jedis? Besides, its a fucking game, who cares?

I wasn't really interested until I read that each class has a separate story arc. If they can pull off something interesting for smugglers, I may be down. And I don't play MMOs.

I'm the opposite, I hope it's near 100% Jedi on each side. SWG's biggest mistake in my opinion was designing a game that didn't really include the franchise's most iconic character; it was more Raph Koster's vision for a sandbox MMO in a generic sci-fi setting with the Star Wars license tacked on. (To clarify I quit long before the NGE).

I'm hoping almost all the classes are force-based because frankly if they have to balance Jedi so they're no more powerful than the guy that picked the "Generic Republic soldier" class it'll be really sad.

My will to play another new game built around a grind is growing weak. I enjoy playing WAR, but I find myself realizing I'm only level 25 out of 40 and I feel the desire to play fading.

I want to play an MMO where you just play instead of seeing how fast you can fill up a transparent bar with color.

Massively has a good interview up (mostly hyping the awesome story). One good point they make is about how the lack of a save really gives the choices more impact since it might be 15 hours into a character arc that would have to be repeated.

2 things:
Why would anyone not want to play as a Jedi? (They'll probably have to make it so Jedi can't do certain things like crafting or piloting or something.)

How do you balance the damn thing? Jedi are awesome. A level 70 Jedi (in the lore or whatnot) could only be killed by another Jedi or by surprise.

there lies the rub.... ...when Bioware explains how they will be keeping the population of Jedi down to 10-15% they will lose the casual market. IMO, part of the reason WoW is successful is even if you are a casual player and don't raid or play hard, you can play any class you want and reach level 70. Most if not all can be solo'd to 70. You may not have the best gear but your character will get there. I think it is this accessibility that brought many of the casual gamers on board and kept them playing.

i should be really excited about this but for some reason i'm just really not... they've made a few of the choices i hoped they would make but they've simply not taken it far enough. They had the change to do something really really new but they didn't. They should make every one a jedi (with classes) along with a team of followers to fill out the other classes and all but give every one a ship from the off and go from there... instead we get one person following us around and the nightmare that is balancing jedi againts any other class.

It's not a bit; hallway level design is a antiquated way of doing things, especially for RPGs. It's the kind of thing that should have never made the transition from PS1/N64 to PS2/GC/XBOX.

Over $200 million? Wow.

As far as the "first KoTOR II"? I think maybe they are not making KoTOR MMO KoTOR III because they want to save that for the next game. I still have hope that they are making KoTOR III.

They've also said that they are putting more into this game than they've put into all of the other games they've made combined. That's a lot of effort, if this game sucks, well then shame on them. What a waste. I have a feeling it will be good though, and it might just be the first MMO that I play. (I played CoH and Matrix Online at a friends house, but I've not played a MMO on my own yet.)

Given that Bioware has never really made a multiplayer game, this is scary. NWN was all about user created content, and was probably their closest attempt. I am nervous that this will just be KOTOR + friends with a monthly fee.

Hotcod

they've said when talking about being pressured by fans to do a kotor 3 that "there's enough content in here to call it kotor 3 4 5 or 6" or at lest something like that... and i'm not sure what to make of it since that is either them just saying there's a hell of a lot of stuff and people who want them to do kotor 3 will be happy enough until kotor 3 comes around oooooooooor more worryingly it can be taken as them saying 'we don't need to do a single player kotor 3 now' which is a bit gut wrenching to think about beacuse the kotor games are close to being my favourite series ever...

Which is why it's odd that i'm not more excited more kotor based stuff from the same people? i should be dancing around... i just feel that they will have to pull something amamzing out of the bag in an area they've never worked in before doing something that has never, with good reason, been tried before. I'm just not sure they can do it and if they are favouring this over any more kotor games i'm kind of sad about it.

I can but hope as we find more stuff out about the game that it starts getting me excited but ah well if i stay pessimistic i can only be surprised heh

It's not the same people, just the same company. They started a new studio in Austin for this project.

They have MMORPG experience - it's what the studio was set up for. Just looking at the one top guy (Gordon Walton) mentioned on Wikipedia, he worked on Ultima Online, Star Wars Galaxies, and the Sims Online.

Just gonna say, the beloved Everquest team made Vanguard. And I doubt anyone would brag about Sims Online or Star Wars Galaxies.

Someone mentioned making Jedis not THE class to be. Simple, make them the tanking class. Least played classes in most MMOs are the tanks and healers.

Considering the (unfinished) ending to KOTOR 2, I expect that's where it is (or was perhaps) headed.

This is exactly the fucking setting Star Wars setting Galaxies should of been, where not only are there Jedi everywhere, but people who know how to kill them and the equipment to counteract some of their shit like cortosis.

It's true. I always thought it was retarded to see twenty Jedi running around an Imperial city in SWG, and I think most players did too.

I doubt BioWare will limit Jedi numbers in this game, and frankly they shouldn't. They'll just balance Jedi/Sith with other classes so the ranks are even.

As big if a Bioware/KOTOR fan I am, MMO's aren't really my thing. My interest in this hinges just how much Bioware can manage to get away from the MMO formula that WoW has entrenched into the genre over the last 4 years, and offer me something new and different. That said, I'll definitely be watching this one eagerly, which is more than I can say for any other MMO that's come out since WoW.
