Uber Entertainment, a relative newcomer to the game development scene, has announced their first title, a third person shooter for XBLA called Monday Night Combat.
In the grand tradition of Rollerball, Death Race and Running Man, you're now fighting on TV for money. You choose from one of six different classes - each with their own unique weapons - and level up as you play. As you can see from the trailer, it's not exactly taking a realistic approach to the genre, with a bit of humor and over the top finishers.
Monday Night Combat is slated to hit XBLA "soon."

The netcode and maps will determine if it's a winner or not. Like the premise based on what I've seen so far . I guess people on PCs already have Team Fortress 2. (I know so does 360, but it was busted last time I played so long ago)

Interesting. It takes the idea of the Halo/Unreal/Team Fortress idea of team based combat, and further moves it toward a sport like environment. I like it. I will keep an eye on this.

This looks awfully close to TF2's style. Wonder if Valve is going to take a legal interest.

I don't see what Valve could actually take them to court over.

Looks interesting. Netcode and how tight and lethal the shooting is will make the difference for me.

Yeah, I don't think you can sue because something reminds you of something else. If that happened the people that created Babylon 5 would have gotten sued into the ground by the people that created Deep Space Nine.

It should have been the other way around, actually. Goddamn thieving Paramount. Ahem, please excuse my B5 fanboyism.
The reason I said what I did about Valve is because watching that trailer I was thinking about TF2, since the style/imagery is so similar it almost appears they were trying to copy it.
Of course the game might suck, and then no one will care anyway.

Yeah, it's an XBLA game so it's a 50/50 chance of that.
On a side note I remember thinking Halo was a ripoff of Quake because the helmet the MC was wearing looked a lot like the Quake marine. I wrote Halo off at first because of that, and refused to play it. Funny how things work out.

They said the same about that online class based shooter with the stylized look from EA too.. BattleFront Heroes?

You've got a point there.

Nice work devs, you nailed it...it's totally TF2's art style that makes it one of the best MP games of all time. Keep going with that train of thought. It worked for BF: Heroes, right? I must have sunk minutes into that game.

I would think they went with the style cause it's simpler.

That very well might be, but when your promo even apes they style of TF2's promos, then I have a hard time giving you the benefit of the doubt.

Why didn't they just make the one team red instead of orange? Then it would have just been TF2 in the future.

I was going to say it looks vaguely like UT meets TF2. :)

Man...the way you guys are talking, it sounds like looking like TF2 is a bad thing...I'm not a fan personally but it's obviously a good game. That many people can't be wrong, right?
Writing it off because it looks like TF2 doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, especially if you like TF2.

Did you watch the video? It's more than just "looks like TF2." It's a competitive class based shooter. In short, it's a TF2 clone that looks like TF2. It might be great, but the fact that they need to ape an art style of game they are aping the gameplay from makes me think this team doesn't have anything original to offer.
I'm fine with games taking a successful aspect of another game and putting into theirs, but when everything I see is aspects of other games, you're going to need to prove to me that your game is worth playing.

With how god awfully broken TF2 was on the 360, I sure hope this is a winner. For being an Arcade title this could definitely be pretty valuable if it's even half as good as BF1943.

Wow, Wolvie. You could not be more wrong about Babylon 5 and Paramount's DS9. B5 came first, B5 was pitched to Paramount first, B5 was rejected by Paramount, and then suddenly there was this new show called DS9...
Fact.
You are right in one thing -- you cannot sue over similarity of ideas, or plot. Storylines have been used and re-used over and over for thousands of years. You cannot sue over it.

Yeah I just looked @ Wikipedia and saw which was released first. DS9 came out first. But yeah, you guys jolted my memory. I do recall someone in a previous thread like this talking about Babylon 5 getting pitched first, then Universal basically stole every idea for DS9 from Babylon 5's "bible".
My bad, I was just trying to use it as a reference to show how someone can blatantly rip someone off, yet make it just different enough to avoid a law suit. Monday Night Combat seems to fall into that category perfectly. I just got it backwards. *shrugs*
Edit: Ah and I see this is your first post. Welcome to Colony of Gamers my friend. :)

Wasn't DS9 the original pitch, but Paramount didn't want to work with JMS, so they just ripped off the basic premise (basing it on a space station instead of a ship like the other Star Treks), but abandoned the over all arc and structure? Then JMS reinvented his idea with an original IP, and Bab 5 was born. Bab 5 was so successful that Paramount looked at it and said, "Wow, we fucked up. Go out to the dumpster and pick up that plot documentation." Then they just turned DS9 into a B5ish drama, with a similar story arc.
That's what I always heard.

why so uppity over them stylizing their characters, should Valve have exclusive rights to this "sort of thing"?
also, DS9 and Babylon 5 both sucked.

That's what I always heard.JMS says that he pitched B5 to Paramount as far back as the late 80s, and they rejected him. He certainly thinks that they cribbed elements of his story for DS9 - mostly the mystical/Emmisary stuff and some of the aliens - but it wasn't close enough to bring before a judge.

Wow... The Emmisary and wormhole aliens were actually the suckiest part of DS9 too.
Pixar legal is on the line, want me to forward them to you Mr. Newell?

You noticed that too? :p The hard sci-fi and military stuff were always the best moments in the series. That's what I remember DS9 so fondly for, not "Hurr space Jesus."

Really. Sisko was a great Captain who could have stood on the ground of his character alone. That gimmicky shit would of been better suited for Janeway or something. Hell, a alien would of been a good excuse the all the ignoring of prime directive she did. Ugh...
I was so hoping one day we'd get a show about Section 31.
