This one definitely falls into the "about time" category. The seminal board game Risk is finally getting an XBLA version.
For the past half-century, millions of RISK fans have been consumed with ruling the world, underscoring the board game’s enduring appeal,” said Chip Lange, Senior Vice President and General Manager of EA’s Hasbro Division. “We’re now going to bring that masterpiece experience to life and add other amazing layers of XBLA-style gameplay that will take conquests to a new level, including the ability to battle players from around the globe for the first time, truly giving new meaning to the phrase ‘world domination’.
You'll also get new gameplay modes and unlock avatar rewards. I can't think of many games that are higher on my list than Risk, so I for one, am looking forward to playing this soon. How about you guys? Look for this in 'early 2010.'

Does this include online play? I'm pretty sure that Monopoly didn't have that.

As a kid I wanted to try this board game, even got it as a birthday present but never got anyone to play it with me. I don't even know how to play...

Expect some flak from NotJeff or myself for that. :D
XBLA has been seeing quite a few card and board games in the last year or two. Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride, Lost Cities, Uno. But unlike those games, Risk can run really long so I'm not sure I'd want to play this one over Live.
Plus it's Risk and I'm a board game snob, so I'm supposed to hate it.

Perhaps they will include some sort of save feature. I think that'd be the smart thing to do.

I'm hoping for a Risk 2210 expansion/release down the line. :D
But still, I'll be getting this. I miss old-fashioned Risk sometimes.

I am willing to bet that having this be electronic will speed things along nicely. I know it did with previous video game incarnations.

I'd buy this mostly because I don't own a physical copy, and this one would be cheaper. All the same, I'd only get it if I could play with people in the same room as me. I don't know if this would even be possible, though. Are you supposed to keep the cards you get a secret? It doesn't seem like it would be that important, but I don't remember for sure. One reason I would want to play with people in the same room is that part of the fun is watching someone's face as they lose a ton of dice rolls in a row after trying to attack someone with a huge army. Also, for as well as other games have been handled on XBLA (Catan, Carcassonne), the community leaves a lot to be desired. People tend to play whatever the new game is for a few weeks, then move on to something else.
Also also, I am not sure that the game the press release is talking about is even the board game version of Risk. It might be some other kind of gameplay entirely.

Yeah, I pretty much stopped buying multiplayer-centric XBLA titles after I figured that out. People just lose interest too quickly and move on to other stuff, even with games that don't really get boring, like Bomberman Live. Eventually it gets nearly impossible to find a good game, so you just have to hope you can talk your friends into pulling away from whatever they're doing.
I guess Uno is still popular, but for as much fun as it was with friends, that game could also provide some of the worst XBL moments. It was particularly bad when in a game with three people who knew each other, and you were just the random player. Also, everyone who gets drunk alone with their XBOX ends up playing Uno.

Exactly, HM. Bomberman Live is the one example that always irritates me the most!
Again though, give me the ability to play the game with others in the room and I'll get it as soon as it comes out. Carcassonne seems much better to me on Live than it would be in person, just because setup and scoring is so much easier. I would imagine Risk would be just as fun.

Is this the 'new faster' Risk or the old classic one?
And do they have the "Neutral" AI's from the old Mac version? Those guys were really challenging.

This will be a must buy for me!
If you have a Silver membership, can you still download games off of XBLA, just not play against others? I hesitate to add any points as I'm not sure but if you can, I'm buying this.

and they'll drop the second they start to lose.
I had Risk on ps2 and it was good fun when people came over to play. If it comes to psn I'll get it because out of the friends that come over to play the board game, only one would rather have the dice rolled for him.

Maybe neither? Unless I have no idea what the new version of Risk is like. If you read the press release, there's lots of stuff in there that gives me pause.
Developed by Magic the Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers studio Stainless Games and featuring cinematics from veteran animation studio Power House Animation, RISK: Factions will offer innovative ways of experiencing the timeless turn-based board game in both objective-based and world conquest modes. Players will be able to engage as one of five playable factions, each with different strengths, as they wage war on new maps with dynamic terrain in their quest for missile silos in order to strategically dominate the game. Additionally, as rivals go head-to-head during unique, animated combat missions, enemies will be able to trigger “Overkill” moments, based on the roll of the dice, and unlock avatar awards while attempting global supremacy. With a new animated art style, kooky humor and a choice of five oddball factions, RISK: Factions is sure to offer something for veteran RISK strategists and newcomers alike.
All I want is normal, old, everyday Risk. I probably have nothing to worry about, but I dislike how vague this is.

Of all the games that have come out in the last 6 months, nothing has been able to get me to dust off my 360. I will most certainly be dusting it off for this.

Unfortunately I don't think our readership would like this sort of game.
I also just realized that at nearly 30 years old, I've never played Risk. Huh. Is it akin to Axis and Allies?

Risk is sped up about a hundred thousand times when you don't have to deal with those fucking little pieces.
HOLYSHIT I LOVE RISK. This is a for sure purchase. I love. LOVE. Risk.

Correct. All you lose access to is the ability to play online with a Silver membership.
And yes! Been waiting, now next up: Stratego!

It's great. Risk and other maps.
edit: Axis and Allies is pure amazing. Risk is a way simpler Axis and Allies.

Apparently Camel is the only one who noticed that this isn't "classic Risk". :p
I bought Risk on Steam, and it was terrible. Even on easy the AI just hands my ass to me every single time.

For those that are interested in Risk and want to be able to play online I recommend http://www.conquerclub.com. They have hundreds of maps and extra rules you can use like fog of war, which changes the game quite a bit.
They take a bit of a different spin on it by giving each player 24 hours to take their turn. It's kind of like playing chess by mail but still alot of fun. Best part is it's free to play.

I never really got into Risk, as it's just too damn long to play usually. I would be more interested in an electronic version, just because I like the idea of having the computer deal with the fiddly stuff while I just play the game.
I would definitely like Stratego more though.

I remember great memories playing Risk. Yes, the game is long as hell; but it's fun when you got friends to play with and like to banter back and forth.
@Seabass: Thanks for that link, will definitely be looking into that for sure.

Kind of, although Risk is far less intense, has no R&D mechanic, (instead you are given extra units by combining 3 of the same card), no money mechanic and usually takes less time to finish a game.
Used to love playing both Risk and Axis and Allies (and the Iron Blitz version) on the PC when they got released.

An Update from Joystiq (http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/12/risk-factions-re-inventing-risk-on-xbla-in-early-2010/):
"You can absolutely play the classic board game if you like," an EA representative told Joystiq. "There's also the Risk 2008 ruleset." We'll hopefully have some assets and more details about how save games will be handled for the classic version soon. The game is also a standalone app and is not part of the Hasbro Family Game Night.
Great news to me!
