EliteXC “Night of Champions,” scheduled for Nov. 8 at the Reno Events Center in Reno, Nev., has been cancelled as the promotion heads into its final days of business, Sherdog.com has learned from numerous sources.

Joey Villasenor (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Joey-Villasenor-528), who was slated to challenge Robbie Lawler (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Robbie-Lawler-2245) for the EliteXC middleweight crown in Reno, was informed of the show's cancellation Monday evening.

TJ Thompson, a Pro Elite executive, said he'd been informed Monday morning by the company that they were closing its doors for good this week and that bankruptcy paperwork had already been filed. Thompson's Hawaii-based Icon Sport promotion was purchased by EliteXC's parent company, Pro Elite, in 2007.

As of Monday afternoon, Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director Keith Kizer said he had not received word that the event had been cancelled.

A notice posted Monday evening at graciefighter.com read, “We are confirming that EliteXC has folded. What this means for our fans and supporters is that there will not be a Nick Diaz (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Nick-Diaz-2831) vs. Eddie Alvarez (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Eddie-Alvarez-9265) fight on November 8th.”

Graciefighter.com is operated by representatives of Diaz’s camp, who was slated to face Alvarez for the vacant EliteXC 160-pound title.

Representatives from Pro Elite did not return calls Monday.

Pro Elite, which has accrued $55 million deficit during its two years of operation, had been in need of a helping hand in recent months.

On Sept. 17, Showtime Networks filed public notice with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission announcing its intention to enter preliminary negotiations for the purchase of the fledgling company.

Showtime, a subsidiary of the parent conglomerate CBS Corporation, already has broadcasting deals with the Los Angeles-based company on both its premium cable channel and CBS. Showtime also has a 20% ownership stake in Pro Elite.

Discussions of Pro Elite’s purchase were said to have gone well and a deal looked imminent as of two weeks ago when EliteXC held its third installment of “Saturday Night Fights” on CBS. The Oct. 4 event, which was funded entirely by Showtime, drew 4.56 million viewers and almost matched their initial May offering on the network.

But negative press surrounding questionable conduct before the main event between Seth Petruzelli (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Seth-Petruzelli-2738) and Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Kevin-Ferguson-22388) have overshadowed the ratings success. Petruzelli, who stepped into the headlining bout on an hour's notice and beat Slice in 14 seconds with a short right jab, intonated afterward on a Monday morning talk show that promoters had given him added monetary incentive to stand with the less ground-savvy Slice.

Pro Elite officials later denied any wrongdoing, calling the pre-fight locker room discussion a "knockout bonus" offer, but public outcry led the Florida State Boxing Commission to open an investigation on the matter.

I know we have an MMA topic but this is a bit bigger. Elite XC is one of the top MMA companies whether you like them or not. Their deal with CBS ensured fighters who normally wouldn't fight on UFC cards a chance at the spotlight. The real victems here though will be the female fighters who at this point have no other national promotion to go to. UFC isn't interested and no other promotion in the US with major exposure has a women's division. Only time will tell if another US promotion can rise to compete on the level with UFC.

And I only ever watched those specials to see Gina Carano. Can we start a "Save Gina Carano" fund?

Wow, I mean I knew there was a chance, but I didn't expect to see it so soon.

You would either have to A) fund your own MMA promotion which is damn expensive or B) buy Dana White a new money hat.

It's pretty clear they were conducting in shady business practices, it's an absolute certainty that they were going to try anything to make sure the Kimbo hype train went full steam ahead. The Shaw's were all about building Kimbo up to be a huge draw so it's not surprising to hear they tried to keep the fight standing the other night.

It clearly didn't work for them, in huge display of irony Seth kept the fight standing for a whole 14 seconds as he put down one of the weakest K.O's I've ever seen, and then proceeded to lay the final Smackdown on Elite XC, ruining the chance they were going to receive the funding to continue.

If there is a god, Gina Carano will start a women's league for the UFC and she'll have a job for a long long time. I mean, she could come live with me, but I think someone would have a problem with that.

This is the best thing to happen to mixed martial arts in years.

Yeah, me. I envision a world where me and her mate like Klingons. After her dripping in syrup and a few broken noses maybe some busted teeth and either me(most likely me) or her in a hospital. We have a bundle of raged full joy in nine months. And his name will be Ryu, like all great fictional fighters. :o

Ummm, don't tell Utada about that.

Damn, the store link for Elite XC is already down. I was going to see if they had anything that might turn into a collector's item.

The only way Xerxes will ever get her is by a hologram. Meanwhile, all I have to do is buff up my body and mojo subtly turning myself into a JamesAustin PowerBond. It's the only remotest chance I could ever have to get that lady *Curses whoever gets her*. :(

I think Gina Carano will single-handedly be the reason women's MMA survives this. They're going to be picked up by someone on the strength of her fan appeal alone.

That would pretty much rule...I'd love to get her in the north south position.

You don't want people do die, do you? Schnoogs just masturbated for 30 minutes on a tame picture of her. Can you imagine if he saw a nude photo of her? He'd die!

I think that you bring up a pretty valid point here. She's got a lot going for her, as I think she's pretty much THE face of Women's MMA.

If Dana was a real business man, he would let Carano and Cyborg go at it as a co-main event. It would be a huge draw and then see what happens from there.

It's a fight everyone wants to see, why not give it to the fans?

Because he's an idiot who'd never go for that? I don't know. You'd think it'd be a freakin' no-brainer, but Zuffa/UFC just doesn't really seem that into airing women's fights.

That would rock if they could get the two of them in the Octagon. Seriously!

I think the last thing he wants is for the UFC to do gimmick types of stunts like midget wrestling or female fighters when all he has been striving for is to get MMA to the point where its accepted everywhere as a legit sport.

Dana White has been outspoken against female fighting...BUT at the end of the day he's a business man and if there's a lot of money to be made he'll go for it.

He could at least keep them close by putting them in the WEC.

Trump is invested in Affliction, is he not? I wonder if he has any say in what goes on there because if he does, I could really see him wanting to scoop up a crowd pleaser/eye candy like Carano.

I read somewhere that Dana said as recently as last week that he thinks Carano/Cyborg would be a big draw, and wouldn't be completely against promoting that fight. Never say never...

I definitely would not be opposed to passing out in her triangle choke.
