View Full Version : PSN Connection Test / Benchmarks?

In my ongoing quest to speed up my PSN capacity, I've bought a wireless network bridge so that I can get Wireless-N to my PS3 via ethernet (normally wireless-G). Helps with streaming from my laptop when its also wireless (since having any G client makes the router *only* G speed, and G->G device isn't too hot for video streaming)

After doing some benchmarking... I'm surprised at the inconsistent speed I get frankly.

The Speed Test in the net connection settings says the most wildly inconsistent results ever although the more tests I run the faster it seems to go (first said 2.8Mbit/500Kbit then the last said 7.8Mbit/1.5Mbit)

Benchmarking a 76MB download (well... stopwatching the rest of a 224/300 MB Beatles DLC) took 2:13 (133 seconds) which = .57MB/s = 4.56Mbps

My ISP is 20Mbit down / 2Mbit up.

The irony is that going to the various flash speed tests online in the PS3's own browser results in around 15Mbit down / 1.5 Mbit up (which... considering it is connecting through three different routers in my house alone isn't too bad of a drop)

Has anyone else run anything similar? What speeds are you getting?

Summary:

ISP (RCN Boston)= 20Mbit / 2Mbit
PS3 Speedtest.Net = 15Mbit / 1.5Mbit
PSN Download Avg = 4.5Mbit

(first try)
PSN Test 1.1 = 2.8Mbit / 500Kbit
PSN Test 4.1 = 7.8Mbit / 1.5Mbit

(reboot + DMZ)
PSN Test 1.2 = 2.5Mbit / 540kbit
PSN Test 2.2 = 6Mbit / 700kbit
PSN Test 3.2 = 11Mbit / 1.5Mbit

This is all through Google's DSN Service, which seems to benchmark the fastest via http://code.google.com/p/namebench/
