View Full Version : When Does Uncharted Become Cool Again?

So I start the game, the game is beautiful... lush. There is a perfect balance of interesting puzzle solving, platforming, and little gun play. Throw in some cut scenes with good acting and it's the best game ever.
Then all of a sudden, now it feels like I'm playing Gears of War. For the last 3 levels it's been nothing but hide behind a rock... shoot/shoot/shoot. Pick up ammo, more guys come out then hide behind a rock... shoot/shoot/shoot. Then walk in a room, hide behind a pillar... shoot/shoot/shoot. It's getting to the point where I dread any time I see boxes or pillars in a room.
This game has gotten to be a chore. I'm finally at the Jet Ski level... so please tell me it gets interesting again soon. Please tell me those cool little puzzles come back and that platforming. I'm sooooooooooooooooo tired of shooting the same guy over and over and over again. When do I get that cool game back that I started playing a few hours ago?

I never thought it got "bad". The platforming was all very simple and my 2 year old could have figured out the puzzles (if you could even call them that) with all the hand holding they did. The fun was in the combat and the hunting for hidden treasures. That, and the characters had a ton of charm.
I think you're maybe half way through the game at the point your at, but I could be off, it's been a while.

Sorry to tell you, but in my opinion it gets worse.
I loved the game overall, but I definitely felt as you, that there was way too much action and not enough platforming for the entire second half of the game.
I'm eagerly awaiting Tomb Raider: Underworld and hoping it'll give me the fix that I was expecting from Uncharted.
Again, I still think Uncharted is a really great game, just a bit too combat heavy in the second half.

Wait... Gorvi said I'm about half way through and you say the combat is too heavy in the second half? :(
If this keeps up, I really don't know why everyone is shouting from the rooftops about the quality of this game. I'm starting to think that people are seeing this game through exclusive first party googles. It's getting to the point where I don't even want to play and I'm say "oh, not again" when I enter a room with pillars because I know I'm going to hear someone say "there he is!!!" and it's going to be hide and shoot for another 20 minutes with the same 3 enemies I've killed 100X over.
I'm going to try to dredge through the game I guess just so I can finish it. I have a lot of other games to play for the system. I have a little faith though. I did the driving part through the jungle and that was super fun so I'm going to cross my fingers (or just lie to myself) and hope that more cool stuff like that is coming up.

I had the exact same feeling as you did almost right around the jet-ski part too. It really does become combat intensive the more the game goes on. That's not to say it's a bad game overall or that it wasn't fun (especially at the start), but by the end I was forcing myself to finish it, especially in a couple of the larger end-game shootouts.

OJD, if you don't like the story or characters quit now and play something else.
I enjoyed the game to the end but I definitely felt there was too much combat in the second half, not to mention that they throw in the end game shooter cliche by adding aliens/mutants to the mix.
If it's getting to you that much at the halfway mark and you're not finding any redeeming features in other areas then I don't think it's worth your time.

I liked that twist. Why didn't you like it?
Because it's a "twist" I've seen one to many times before.
EDIT: Big spoiler wall sorry...
Also, I forgot because it meant that some of the final levels played more like survival horror, which I found a bit disconcerting.
I'm sure some people would like it, but it was the same reason I loved the first half of the movie Shaun of the Dead but hated the second; the change of tone from comedy to pure zombie horror was really jarring for me and I didn't like it at all. I like zombie movies when they SET OUT to be zombie movies, but not when they're basically comedy and suddenly everything gets serious. Uncharted was the same for me, I loved the outdoor settings and the humor of the characters and then suddenly getting locked in an industrial basement with monsters was just really disconcerting for me.
Again, I actually loved the game overall and will buy the next one, but it did have some elements that weren't quite to my personal taste.

You're right about the change. But it was a change I liked. I like it when a game can adapt to the story and provide additional styles in gameplay. Half-Life 2 does this so well.

I like the characters and the story. But if I wanted to play Gears of War, I'd play Gears of War. I think I was sold on the game thinking it was an adventure game not just hiding and shooting for hours on end.
I'll finish it... just disappointed that it's turned into nothing but a shooter. At least I'm getting my headshot trophies.

I agree with that only if the change in gameplay is well done and not tacked on.
Yes, HL2 did it well, but for me the change in question in Uncharted meant a dumbing down of combat to give cheap scares. i.e. the monsters just blindly rush at you over and over, you can't use cover and by this point I was already feeling the game was too combat heavy anyway.
But if I wanted to play Gears of War, I'd play Gears of War.
Pretty much how I felt about it.
There's nothing wrong with diverse gameplay when it's done right and is not obtrusive to what the core gameplay is/should be.

Enjoyed it from end to end, just as I would that woman in the picture above---given the opportunity.
The only real negative for me would have to be the final boss battle, a problem Uncharted shares with Bioshock. Two different fights entirely at odds with everything that came before. I suppose the fist fight in MGS4 fits that bill too but somehow it just worked. By that point in the MGS saga we wanted to beat that guy to death with our bare hands so I suppose it worked out. :)

I bet you didn't see it coming in that game though.
I saw that coming very close to the beginning, when looking at the carving at the idol creche and they wonder whether the figures worshiping it are human or not.
There are also skull totems and other things early in the game that Drake focuses on. It was a highly telegraphed twist.
I did love the game, but I was also pretty tired of the combat by the end. I wanted more of the platforming and puzzle solving.

Shoot the boss a bunch, end games can fucking die. There were so many problems with cliches and bad tropes. Decent puzzles, combat was fine. Story, who gives a fuck? I want to see the sequel, where the problems are addressed.

I think Uncharted is better than Tomb Raider and Gears combined, how's that?:P
Seriously, I thought as a shooter Uncharted was more interesting because I shoot mostly real thugs and pirates. This beats the hell out of space lizards and felt really refreshing. The setting was beautiful, the story well told, characters down to earth and realistic and the whole game just screams fresh and different for these things alone. Finally a game which doesn't feature a big boobed slut or some thick neck space grunt saying oogah all the time. Gunplay was decent as well. I liked it way better than Gears.
The exporation was rather simple, but at least it was done well, and the visuals really made it interesting.

I bet you didn't see it coming in that game though.
Not seeing something coming doesn't mean it was well written. It's actually really easy to throw out twists if you simply never give good clues what the twist is.
If it turned out 80% of the way through Resident Evil 5 that the whole virus was made by magic space unicorns, it wouldn't make that good writing that it came out of nowhere.

Acutally, they hinted at it pretty well.
They hinted at it with glimpses of "something" out of the corner of Drake's eye, all the little symbols made out of bones and guns, some odd footprints, etc.... I didn't see the twist exactly how it happened coming, but I knew there was something up.

OJG, it's not going to get better for you. I felt the exact same way as you as the game turned into a shooter. Towards the end of the game, it is essentially all shooting/action. The exploration and adventuring part of the genre, most notable in the Tomb Raider titles, is completely absent. You're just too busy trying to stay alive and kill the bad guys.
I am in the camp that expected something different from the game and was disappointed as I forced myself to finish it. Luckily, it was a rental.

Yeah, I already had the feeling at the scene at the very start were the statue was supposed to be. It was so obvious you couldn't miss it. The rest of your remarks only amplified it.
If there's one single thing wrong with the game than it's that whole part though. I was seriously thinking "OH FUCK NOT THE SAME CRAP, AGAIN!"
It was really going very well without it.

Aww man, and you are close to the point where it gets really bad. The combat gets worse. Much worse.
Then, you will start to miss the annoying combat when the game goes all Farcry on you. Seriously, people enjoyed it when the game went from decent combat against fairly intelligent brown people to dumb ass monsters that run straight at you?
And that final boss fight with the dude using a sniper shot gun was just retarded.
Not a terrible game by any means, but I found it to be very overrated.

I going to try to fight my way through Gears of Uncharted for a few more hours but if it just keeps on being this same hide/shoot/shoot/shoot stuff over and over again I can't see myself wasting anymore time on it.
I thought it was going to be an adventure game so I should have researched it more before going into it. I borrowed it from a friend so it's not like I'm missing out any cash. Just disappointed that I think the game could have been so much more then just a non-stop hide and shoot game.

I beat the game on hard my first run-through, and had plenty of "die, respawn, try tactic, die, respawn, repeat" moments but I still enjoyed it. Hiding and shooting pissed me off and I avoided it as much as possible, just as in GTAIV, so I would hold my gun out and peek around edges to kill enemies, bounce grenades around cover, even run around and try to beat single opponents to death. I would get creative if just shooting didn't work, and it helped. The "change" near the end did make the game feel like a survival-horror game, forcing me to calm my nerves so I could concentrate on taking out the enemies as quick as possible as you could die in one hit if they get close enough. However, I still enjoyed that. They were scary and I like being scared! The end boss fight is a huge bitch though. Lucky I didn't break my DS3

Apart from the end I think the thematic problems in 95 % of the other games are far more apparent than here. At least you're not saving Planet X from Evil queen number XX. It's more mature in it's handling of it's characters than any game I played since Half Life 2. Girls aren't portrait ed as sexual objects for instance. The bad guys aren't obviously so. Drake itself is a like able fellow (I can't remember when I actually liked a main game character this much without him or her being a complete stereotype or empty grunt. It actually tells it's story in a very decent way. And a lot better than a Tomb raider.
i agree the end fucks it up, so do a lot of games and movies. I feel no need to be harder on this game than on any I played the last 3-4 years. And I really don't get why suddenly this game deserves all the "hate".

You thought the ending was easy? With the sniper shotgun that can one hit kill you, cover that gets blown up easily, and more and more enemies spawning? I thought it was pretty darned difficult.
The QTE finishing was easy, if lame, however.

QTE was easy, yes, but the last level wasn't too difficult. My main problem was running out of ammo. But aiming for the head solves that.
Basically the last level breaks down in 3 sections I believe, before the QTE area. Each area has the "boss" and some goons. First you must take cover, aim everything at the boss (who follows a simple pattern where he needs to reload after every shot) and once he has enough he'll run away. Then take out the goons. They don't respawn. I think the last area before the final boss square-off a few enemies do come running in, but that's it. Kill them, move on to Navarro.
And he's tit. Hide behind the boxes, he breaks them with his shotgun, run to the next set of boxes. Repeat until you reach him and trigger the QTE.

There is no "hate" all of a sudden, if you read the thread you'll see that I loved the game to death when it first started but it got to the point where it has become repeditive with nothing but gun fights over and over and over again so I started the thread asking if it let up anytime soon and if the cool part of the game that I really enjoyed at the beginning was going to come back.
The only hate on my part is believing the hype from this game from people yelling from the rooftops that it's a AAA title and a must play. While it is a great game when it starts with puzzles, platforming and a little action gun fights, it just seems like they ran out of ideas and just have you have constant gun fights for the vast majority of the game. As I said before, I actually groan anytime I enter a room and there are a bunch of pillars in there. I'm very excited when I enter an area and don't see any boxes or pillars in the middle of the area because that means I'm not going to be shooting the same three guys over and over again for the next 20 minutes.
It's a good game IMO, just not a great one and one that does not need to be held on the pedestal that it has been for the last year. I'm not hating on this game, but hating on false hype that it's been given only because there wasn't anything better for the system at the time. I guess I just expected more from Naughty Dog since the Jak series was so great.
I'll play it through, I'm still on the Jet Ski level. Once I get tired of the Call of Duty 5 beta, I'll go back to it and try to finish it before all the next wave of big games comes out. But I will always recommend this game as a rental only and tell everyone to stop playing the game when they feel the gun combat is starting to take over the game too much.

OJG, I think your expectations were just off. Most of the game is the gun combat. Sure, there are adventure elements, more in the beginning than anything else, but the game is much more comabt focused than anything else. This isn't Tomb Raider.
I still haven't played HS. I may get around to it some time, but I'm not feeling terribly compelled to do so. Maybe once I can grab it for ~$15.
I was expecting Dude Raider, not Gears of Uncharted so yes... it is my fault for not further researching the game and just going by other's opinions. I just wasn't looking for a Gears of War clone and think the game could have been so much more then what it turned out to be. It is a little false advertising in the beginning of the game though, you can't deny that. The gun fighting only over takes the game after chapter 5 I think. It was after I escaped the half sunken boat that I felt the game took the turn from Raider to Gears.
As for Heavenly Sword, I thought the game was decent but there comes a point early on where they force you to use the sixaxis and it's horrid and really uncontrollable so I stopped playing it and put in Uncharted. Now if you can turn off the sixaxis that is great but I refuse to play that game if I'm forced to use broken controls. The animations are fantastic though and the ground combat which is a little repetitive, is pretty decent. It's worth a rental IMO.

But that's at the very beginning of the game. Well, maybe half an hour to 45 minutes in. Before that, you didn't have anyone to shoot at anyway.

There was a demo that they put up on the Japanese PSN that never came out here that had a portion where you controlled her sister shooting arrows that was SIXAXIS controlled. It felt a bit loose, but it worked well enough. Is it worse than that? I do remember hearing about some overused hat throwing thing, but I don't remember specifics.
Regardless, the demo that we all got didn't impress me too much, the combat didn't feel right. It seemed like it'd be worth playing at some point, but nothing to rush out and get.

I can't believe you're comparing it to Gears of War. They are nothing alike. So the guy hides behind debris to kill pirates. Big deal.

Of course not. In fact, I had the most enjoyment out of the SixAxiS in heavenly Sword. He's referring to some points in the game where you are using a catapult to kill things and use the SixAxiS to redirect them. It's fun as shit.

You're right, it wouldn't be a big deal if it wasn't 90% of the f'ing game and nothing else. The other parts of the game are so much fun. Like driving in the jeep in the jungle shooting cars behind you... that was fun. Hiding behind the same boxes/pillars and shooting the same EXACT three guys is boring and repetitive. I understand that you like the game but you cannot deny that the hiding and shooting is repetitive and shouldn't be such a major focus in an "adventure" game.

Yes, the catapult is what killed it for me. Made me eject the disc and put in another game. Even Lair was patched to not force you to use the shitty sixaxis.

I enjoyed the fighting. I enjoyed the puzzle solving. I enjoyed the whole game. Best action adventure game i've ever played. And I beat it four times.

I guess I didn't see a big problem with it. It didn't last that long.

Personally I didn't really enjoy the jeep or jet ski sequences. They were okay simple as a change of pace, but I wanted to get back to the cover shooting most of the time.
