View Full Version : Steam/Far Cry 2 Question

I just made my first Steam purchase - I pre-ordered Far Cry 2.

How does that work now? Does it pre-download the files? It doesn't seem to be downloading anything. Or does it wait until the unlock day and then download everything all at once?

Seems like it would make more sense to have people download the files over time when possible, instead of having everybody try to download them all at once.

But I dunno. Can anybody tell me how that works?

It pre-downloads it, and on launch day you are given access to an unlock patch, hopefully. Let's hope Ubisoft is not cluster fucked like Take 2 was on Bioshock.

Wrong. There is no pre-load on Far Cry 2.

Well, I am not buying it, just going by every other one I have pre-ordered. No need to get testy, my banana riding friend.

I'm not the one on the defensive.

Son of a bitch. I didn't realize there was no preload until I looked here, less than a minute after purchasing :(

I won't be able to play it until I get home anyway, so I'll just start the download before I leave for work in the morning.

Crisis averted.

You THINK that, but I just looked at the Steam forums, and they are widely agreeing that the official release time is 7:00 PM EST on the 22nd!

So instead, you will get home, maybe wait a bit, and THEN start the download. :(

True. Steam itself says "This game will unlock in approximately 23 hours."

So not only is there no preload, but I have to wait until the evening to even download it! Poor showing, Steam.

Blame Ubisoft. Steam would probably be more than happy to allow preloading over a couple days vs. having a shit ton of people doing it all at the same time.

When I think what a fuck up Valve and Take 2 have had on just unlock patches, my mind boggles at how Ubisoft is going to support all of these simultaneous full downloads.

i've seen lots of people get pissed at valve and steam over this but what exactly can they do? It's take 2 stuff, valve can't just wade in and sort it out... in other words take 2 droops the ball and steam gets the blame? or am i missing something

My analogy is to how with Half-Life and Orange Box, as well as Bioshock, the simple downloading of an unlock code, borked the servers, be they Valve's or Take 2's. And those were major, prepared launches. What will a full game do?

ohhhhhh sorry i thought you where talking about the missing steam codes in the take 2 nba game or what ever it is.

There getting much better as time goes with the server stuff but ya the whole point of a preload is that you avoid the god awful server traffic your in line for... unless there's a hell of a lot of servers put in place it could get messing. I'm presuming it's something to do with not wanting the game files to be out there... which is silly since there's already retail PC dvd clones up on torrent.

I doubt the Windows Update servers could handle something like this. There is a reason Blizzard pre-releases patches via a torrent client and Relic has been Beta testing one. This is expensive, and any hiccups can spell disaster. Day 1 problems? Even worse.

There either not expecting big sales on steam or don't care... either way it's a bad idea... then again hopefully if it all goes tits up in the US if it comes to steam over here it will be sorted out heh

So, the first guy that you meet up with and start working for was given a horrible voice actor. His sentences keep running on even though there are periods and his voice remains monotonous, it's quite disturbing.

:p Awesome. I loved how bad the story and dialogue in Far Cry was!

Yeah. It's as if he was in a real hurry to go back home from the recording studio and read all his lines at 4x speed in a breathy/gruff voice.

Once I made that post I went back to the game to play the multiplayer. It's always fun killing other people who you know are probably raging on the other side of the connection, but it takes A LOT of shots to kill somebody, like almost an entire clip. Two to three shots with a sniper rifle, too. I've only played Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch not the CTF and whatever else, yet.
