I was feeling in a retrogame-y mood tonight, and stumbled across a really nice Tempest 2000 clone -- Typhoon 2001. (http://typhoon.kuto.de/)
It's the best of the Tempest clones I've come across, and even includes the original soundtrack ripped from the Jaguar cartridge.
This might finally kill that desire in the back of my head to pick up a Jag & T2K. Maybe.

Dear God in heaven, I this had a "classic" mode, it would be the end of me. Good fun but it picked up too much of Minter's visual "noise" from T2k to be able to play for any period of time.
(Minter just got into a bad habit of overusing additive blending of a bunch of cruft and then telling you you just didn't get it when it wasn't any fun).

If you turn all the effects and alphas down/off in the visual settings menu, it gets a lot more cleaner and "classic" looking, but the pixel shatter explosions are still everywhere which are the main visual obstruction.
Did you try any of the alternate camera modes? (function keys) One of them is a mode where your claw stays centered, and the web rotates around the screen. It's pretty cool, and from my understanding, it's the original intent when Tempest was created.

Ahhh... much better, thanks. Agreed, explosions are still too chunky but I can now follow what's going on past the third level.
I'll give the alternate camera modes a whirl -- I could see why they wouldn't work on the original machine -- it would have wreaked havok on the guns in the vector tube.
