Someone I follow on twitter said their wife called them a nerd for naming his drives after Star Trek characters. I think most geeks tend to have traditions for naming their computer drives and other gadgets.

For the past decade or more my home PC's C: and D: drives are always named "Crow" and "Servo".

Logic should dictate that the computer itself should be named "S.O.L." but it ended up being named "Bebop" when I was on a Cowboy Bebop craze and the name has stuck through successive computers. I had an uber geek moment last year when I got my first laptop and it was a special (red) charity one from Dell, so it had a nice deep red for the cover. What else could I name it but "Swordfish II"?

When I finally got an iPod years ago the first name that sprung to mind was "PipBoy". As I still keep it around for data storage I had to come up with a different iPhone name and went with "GLaDOS".

What are your gadget names?

I have never named a gadget beyond "Rory's iPod."

Superman's Dead

I named my Xbox Harddrive Xbox McGee, I think. McBox. Something like that.

My best friend has consistently named every gadget he has "The Bat (whatever)" for years. Bat Phone, Bat Computer, Bat Network, etc.

I never name my gadgets/drives, but my routers/networks tend to have names from DC comic locals. My wireless network is currently the Watchtower and my home network in the past has been Keystone [City] and various other things like that.

That's pretty clever. "Quick! Reset the Bat Router!"

The only thing I have name is the network and the PCs that reside there. Otomo, Akira, Kei, Tetsuo, Kaneda, etc.

Oh, and I guess the hard drives/partitions in all the machines get their own names too.

I never thought of naming my gadgets. I have stumbled upon new geek chic that I must try :)

When I was dual booting Win7 RC and XP, the OS's were named OXICLEAN and OXICLEAN MAX FORCE, respectively. Now that I'm dual booting Win7 and Ubuntu, with the Linux boot loader primary, once I figure out how to name things it's going to be "OXICLEAN" and "rag with spit on it".

Probably not very geeky. It's just to piss off some friends of mine who take operating systems way too seriously.

I don't name too many things. I've had a little red flash drive for years that I named "Rush Jet". As for mp3 players, they're named what they are: "Sansa4" and "Zune8"

The last set of names I used were of the three furies: Alecto, Magaera, and Tisiphone. At my last job I named everything after places in Middle Earth and then FF6 characters.

The two iPods I own are Starbug and Red Dwarf. Computers just get named for their locations in the house.

I tend to give my computers names based on myth and my vague sense of their personality. My main desktop is usually Poseidon. My work desktop is Hephaestus. My laptop is Apollo.

Two of my friends have computers named "JOOWANTAXE" and "IGOTAXEFORYOU". Always gives me a chuckle at LAN parties.

I name my hard drives/partitions Larry, Curly and Moe, with Shemp if needed.

Ink Asylum
12-31-2009, 03:16 PM
That sounds like a recipe for disaster. Larry's going to try to retrieve some files from Curly, only for Moe to spin up and accidentally smack him with a RAM stick, sending him head-first into the heat sink.

I name quite a few things Bat(whatever). My iPod is the Batpod, for instance. The computer I'm using is called DeeperBlue (a silly joke, I know, but it was my first build!). Right now I'm sticking to calling my Droid FUCKING AWESOME ^_~.

My PC's been through several iterations. It was originally Grendel, then Tiamat after an extensive upgrade, and is currently Horus. The only other gadget I have is my Palm, which is named Ghost.

On the not-so-gadgety side, my old car was named Judith and my bicycle is Bucephalus.

I name my partitions after the letter they are given. My win7 partition is named Cindy, my vista partition is named Dave and my zune is named Frank. I think I named my flash drive george. I generally don't name my gadgets though.

Old beat up computer was Galactica.
Got a laptop and named it Pegasus.
New desktop and new laptop are named Triton and Solaria.

Named them after Battlestars for those of you who never watched Battlestar Galactica. (Shame!)

I name all my computer gear based on the very old (but fondly remembered) Thieves' World books. So I have computers named Sanctuary, Tempus, Critias, Straton, Ischade, etc. Obscure to the average Joe, which makes the names useful to me.

I do IT work for my school and whenever we get a computer that isn't shitty (aka a computer for us) I name it after a specific Imperial Star Destroyer. My computer is named Eclipse.

I feel very art geeky now...
I named my boyfriend's first laptop Obsidian, his second is Diptych, and mine is named Triptych.
My jump drive is Liam, which means "determined guardian"... this is usually where things like term papers are backed up. I have yet to name my phone, as I have yet to encounter a situation where I want to yell at it.
I named my bicycle Eyler.

A think a more pertinent and telling question would be "why do you name your gadgets?".

Because they're my gadgets. Naming something is a way to declare ownership. It's also fun to come up with names that mean something to you.

I usually name my gadgets because setup usually prompts me for a name. Isn't that why everyone names their gadgets?

Some people just have no imagination.

I don't name much of anything myself except my Zune is Optimus Prime, but my dad works as lead comp tech and a large research lab and has fun with it. He's starting a Spartan army. Up to 127.

Actually, I must admit, I named my phone once purely for amusement on anyone searching bluetooth in public.

I once heard someone laugh when they were playing about with their bluetooth in a pub and came across "KingOfTheJews".

now it's just Myiphone on my current phone.

All my gadgets received Final Fantasy inspired names (which were inspired by actual mythology in most cases). However If I replaced the device, the name got another numeral added on. Hence:

Ipod: Leviathan II
PSP: Bahamut II
Ipod Touch: Cerberus
PS3: Ragnarok

Don't really name anything. My PC's computer name is roboninja-i7; not really creative in any way. Hard drive partitions? Well, my current D drive is called 640GB WD Black. Descriptive, but hardly anthropomorphic.
