View Full Version : Command and Conquer 4 Gameplay Looks Fun

As seen in this 5 minute developer walkthrough. The big change this time around seems to be the addition of fixed classes such as Offense and Support (the video demo shows off the Offense class gameplay) and upgrade crates seem to play a vital role, more so than in the previous games.
Check out the HD trailer from GT:

Command & Conquer 4 is set for release in March '10.

Nothing more needs or begs to be said but if you insist... it's looking to be dull boring stupid uninspired unoriginal rubbish and I now feel like I've expended more time and energy on it than it warrants. I have been a die hard fan of C&C and RA for the longest time and the way EA have gone about murdering the franchises has been pretty much unforgivable.
Or in other more simple catchy and just as valid words, that sum up my view and opinion... it looks stupid, and not in a good way.

I'm not all that thrilled by what I saw.
It might be alright, but it just looks... off.
Then again I'm not exactly a huge fan of tank spam type RTSs anymore, so even if it had stayed traditional C&C I probably wouldn't have liked it. I seem to recall something stupid about their DRM or something so I wasn't going to get it anyway I guess.

On the other hand, I'd been playing plenty of RA3 last year and this looks like its right up my alley. I'm not looking for anything ground breaking or revolutionizing, if its good ole C&C gameplay with added shit then its good for me. People release sequels with far less all the time.
I hope the online isn't a disconnect-fest, though.

how is no base building and resource nodes good old C&C gameplay?

I was referring to the combat and resource-capturing.

So they're moving in the same sort of direction that Dawn of War 2 did? Less about base construction and more about resource node capture? And it looks to me like infantry is pretty much gone...
I don't know. I've enjoyed Dow2...but it doesn't at all feel like Dow1. In some ways good, in others not so much. I'm working on C&C 3 on the xbox right now. Honestly, I'd miss having more control over the type of base I build and the sort of units I have access to...
I'll guess there'll be a demo here at some point soon. I think I'd wait until I have a chance to try it out before I get to worked up one way or the other.

I got a strong DOW2 vibe too. With the only difference being it lacks the same type of unit/counter balances that DOW2 has.
I don't know why, maybe its because I'm a huge fucking turtling bastard but I just didn't 'feel' it. Although I did enjoy DOW2, I'll probably give this a whirl if it gets good reviews.

both of which seem to be changing dramatically from "good old C&C"... now don't get me wrong I'm not trying to attack you for liking the look of the game. That's a matter of taste but honestly there's really not very much "good old C&C" left from the looks of this new game... and that's sad... there are other games that are doing what they are trying to do much better than it looks like they are doing it so far but no other RTS games that have such a licence to go old school and not to reinvent the wheel and have people want them to do it.

I skipped Red Alert 3, but enjoyed playing C&C3 a lot. I'll play this.

Have you played Red Alert 3?
Aside from the absence of air units, I'm not seeing much different. To each their own, as you're saying... I guess.

Absent from the C&C4 video. Not RA3.

I am a die hard C&C fan, and some of you may remember my rants, especially on EvAv.
BUT, I think it's time for this change of gameplay (and it's nothing like RA3. All RA3 introduced was alternative modes for every unit). I'm a fan of DoW and CoH, so I welcome a C&C themed version of that RTS-style. I think this looks fun, and I am very excited to play it. Especially as a closer to the Tiberium universe...or so they say.
In the end, I still prefer base-building RTS's. Rarely do they it right and I do Love Kane's Wrath. I hope the Tiberium franchise come back in the future with less of a cartoony look but with the original base-building.

Yes, and it was alright for the most part. But we are just clearly seeing different things... in the end if i want DoW2 or CoH i'll go play them, if i want C&C or RA seems like i'll just have to boot up the old games.

I actually enjoy base building, so a lot of these RTS titles that get rid of it (and Dawn of War 2 was FAR from the first) don't really interest me all that much.
The only non-base building RTS I've ever really enjoyed was the MYTH series.
Edit - I keep seeing Company of Heroes mentioned, but that game has base building! Why the comparison?

Because base-building was rather light. Normally, if you got to the point of being in the enemy base and able to destroy a structure, you are pretty much ending the game. Whereas in C&C, you can take out powerplants or refineries that will change up the game even only half way through.
Also, CoH focused more on the units. Trying your best to keep them alive...no one is fodder. That's the route C&C4 is going. No more massing and just sending them to blow everything up.

You're right. The base building in CoH was much lighter than C&C, Age of Empires, Starcraft, etc.

Well thats... just, stupid. For half that video they where in fact winning me over with the concept idea of the network but then they show how they implement it and I honestly faceplamed. There's a comment from some one who says they've beta tasted the game and that it's awful and people are saying that a lot of the feed back from other people and game sites that have played the game (i've not read these my self) are all very negative.
The more I'm seeing the more I'm becoming willing to just write it off and move on... which is a shame :(

oh god. I decided to try and see if that was just one bad article, and dug around for as much info as I could.
I think I facepalmed as hard as you Hotcod. What the fuck are they thinking?
It's a shame, as some of the concepts sound solid, but the implementation sucks. They really need to redesign the whole thing, but I think they will just push it out to die in the cold.
It's going to flop big time. I guess I can always pick it up for £5 one day to see where the story went.

I also enjoyed the C&C series before EA ran it into the ground. I'm not looking forward to CC4. There has been chatter that the dev team has been told they will be gone once the game ships.

If they manage to nail a Generals sequel, they'll be back in my good books. Right now, I won't trust them after CnC3.

Did you play Kane's Wrath? When Riccitiello came in, he made the team write an apology letter to the community and made Kane's Wrath the way the fans wanted. Obviously this is bad if the devs can't get it right to begin with, but luckily this was fixed.

Command & Conquer 4 won't have LAN support or dedicated servers (http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/20/command-and-conquer-4-wont-have-lan-support-or-dedicated-servers/)

It's basically the Ubisoft plan for DRM. One could argue that because C&C4 offers persistent server-side experience tracking and cheat detection, they have more of a reason to go with an always connected DRM plan, but it still suck for us old-school people.

The NoDVD crack teams surely have their work cut out for them this year, it seems. :p

Actually no. I kind of stopped following/playing it within a month and never looked back heh. It's too late for CnC4 for me, after that fiasco even if they fixed it, and with Supcom2 on the way... I wash my hands of them.

It is odd for this type of game, isn't it. It's probably part of the DRM, as someone else has said. I don't think I would really mind except on principal. Whenever I lan, we always have an internet connection and would probably go online; especially since this is a 5v5 title.
On the actual game, I'm not sure I would prefer this over an original style RTS. Maybe I'm not high level enough, only 10 or 11 now, but it seems very rock-paper-scissors. Even more so than most. At the start, without some good scouting or like newbs they build right on a control point, you build whatever. If he builds the counter, you get destroyed and counter his army. Then he rebuilds. It's ok in a 4v4 or 5v5 though I guess.
It doesn't help that I am really liking what is coming out of Chris Taylor's mouth though :P It has yet to be seen if he delivers though.
