Here it goes again! Every forum needs one, and every time one of the films is about to come out the argument heats up again: who is your favourite 007 and why?
Sean Connery (1962-1967, 1971)
George Lazenby (1969)
Roger Moore (1973-1985)
Timothy Dalton (1987-1989)
Pierce Brosnan (1995-2002)
Daniel Craig (2006-present)
For me, I like the underdog: Dalton. As a fan of the Fleming novels, Dalton more closely resembles the literary Bond I know. My least favourite is definitely Moore. Far too silly! And, for the record, I thought Lazenby was a fine Bond. He just really didn't have any on-screen chemistry with Tracy, and the film suffered from it.
And no "Connery! /thread" nonsense, please! Elaborate why.
Aaand... cue somebody posting "Connery! /thread"

Brosnan is still my favourite. While the films he appeared in weren't always the best - and indeed, the later ones were absolutely awful - his delivery, appearance, and actions were spot on I thought.
The scene in Goldeneye where he adjusts his tie while driving the tank is one of my favourite Bond moments ever.

Connery and then Brosnan
Both because they're just, right, in the role.
Moore is my least favorite because he always seemed like way more of a jackass than a gentleman.

I thought about including him, but I figured I keep it simple and restrict the poll to the EON film "canon."
And... @Typical Michael: Brosnan? Really? I thought I knew you, man...

Brosnan was great in the role, although I didn't find his movies to be the best of the series. Honestly, I really like the dark and gritty Bond that Craig's shown us in the most recent film, and it looks like that will continue in Quantum of Solace, which is fine by me.

I watched most of those Bond movies back when I had no capacity for keeping track of actors' names, so, now that it's been too long for me to remember that much movie detail, I have no bloody idea.

I voted Connery as the his are still some of my favourite movies, I thought Goldeneye was excellent whereas I was not a huge fan of the rest of Bronson's movies. Though I don't mind any of the bonds truth be told.

My favorite is Brosnan. I had seen the older Bond movies with my dad, but Goldeneye was the first Bond movie I saw in a theater and I was like ten - it must have been an impressionable time, because he became Bond for me. Nostalgia, I guess.
My next favorite is Roger Moore, because my friend and I love the silliness. We've watched so many holiday marathons while making Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner, laughing about how ridiculous those movies were. Nostalgia again.
Dalton and Craig are very good "book Bonds", they'd definitely be my favorites if I preferred the books to the movies. I've read the novels and they're interesting, but serious Bond < Roger Moore Bond's cheeky lechery.

Dalton. And Lazenby was good, too (one of the best Bond films IMO). Connery gets credit for starting the film Bond, but I really like how Moore made fun of that Bond (though, he's my least favorite). But Dalton certainly came in with a very good Bond. Brosnan is just great too, no complaints there. Actually, Moore was originally wanted for the role, and after Connery's departure, Dalton was asked to fill in.
Craig is just okay. They purposely went in another direction anyway, which is still similar to the books but a little too hard in character.

I voted for Timpthy Dalton. His movies were edgier than the Bond movies before him. His movies were my introduction to James Bond, and while Brosnan and Connery have since become my favourites in their own right, Dalton's version of Bond will always have a special place in my heart :)

This is a pretty good split. Aside from poor Lazenby who generally fares poorest in these polls, there's a much greater spread than I'd expect. Obviously, we haven't had enough votes to get a decent picture yet, but this could be interesting.
There probably is a lot of bias towards the ones that you grew up with, or saw first, or have seen more often. I'm pretty young, so while I've seen them all, the pre-Brosnan ones are the 'old ones' to me, and are compared against him.

I think Brosnan was the best Bond. Shame about the movies he was actually in, though.

For action, I'd go with Daniel Craig. His athleticism makes Bond feel somewhat less preposterous to me as a character. For the rest of the Bond characteristics I'd go with Sean Connery. Brosnan was great in Golden Eye, and went downhill very quickly thereafter. Dalton was ok. Not as good as Brosnan in Goldeneye, but better than everything else he was in. The other two are best forgotten.

I will allow it. That general trend does seem to follow that your first would be your favourite. I, too, saw GoldenEye first and would have picked him as my fave if I hadn't gone back and watched the rest of them.
Now I'm tempted to post another poll, asking how many of the Bond films some of us have actually seen. We can debate pros and cons all day, but most of us haven't seen the entire canon. I, for one, have seen them all and own all the DVDs.

Like before, I'll go ahead and give it to Connery - he is certainly my favorite out of the bunch. Brosnan, on the other hand, just seemed so Bond-like that it was a shame the material itself wasn't better. I also like Dalton and Lazenby quite a bit more than most people. And, finally, I absolutely hated Moore and I'm not warming up to Craig too much.

The writing in Casino Royale was top notch. Not too much gadgetry, some solid intrigue and spying. When he jump started his own heart, it reminded me of John Rambo dressing his bullet wounds. We need not go into what happened in "the chair."
I found some of those scenes to be throwbacks to the punishment he took in Layer Cake. A must watch for any fan of gangster movies.

One of my favourite scenes in CR is the Parkour chase, which showed him more as a no-nonsense, pragmatic guy who knows how to get stuff done.
Comparatively, if this had been a Brosnan flick, Bond would have shown some mad free-running skillz and out performed/acrobaticed the guy.
If it had been Moore, he probably would have used some crazy rocket skis. He would also probably startle a monkey so that it fell into a ditch, which is also kind've awesome.

My favorite Bond would be Brosnan, mainly because he looks the part. But he also has the manners down, adjusting his tie while in the tank as mentioned before, but also adjusting his tie underwater in (from memory) The World is not Enough.
I liked the last Bond-movie with Daniel Craig, but I think he didn't look the part. I do want to see the next Bond movie, even though Bond looks like a Russian...

I was thinking about it and it seems to me that every bond movie before Casino Royale was really a Sci-Fi movie. I loved the re imagining that came with Casino Royale. It seems like up until now Bond was a guy who said snappy things, shot people and made love. Where Craig uses martial arts and.. doesn't make love..

Bingo. From Russia with Love is my favorite Bond film, followed by Casino Royale, GoldenEye, The Living Daylights, and OHMSS.
I voted for Dalton, because when I was younger and watching the Connery/Moore movies I always wondered why Dalton wasn't Bond, and then I realized that he was for a while! Ever since I saw Dalton in a few other things I had thought he looked like James Bond, and then someone told me that he had done two Bond films. I just wish he had done more.

Seems like the people who love Brosnan love him for his first movie, so I think one good flick is all it takes.
I voted Craig. I find him to be the most believable Bond, and he gets the benefit of being an early Bond (story-wise) so I'm hoping this next flick will let us see him grow even more 'Bond-ish' as he gains experience. Connery is a close second, then Brosnan, than Moore than Dalton. I've never seen the one with the other guy.

After I saw Casino, I read Dr. No and Casino Royale. I was shocked at how much of the "raw" dialogue and plot in CR was straight out of the book ("The bitch is dead" and the chair scene, to name two examples)! I think that Connery is the best film Bond, but Craig seems, thus far, to be closest to the literary Bond. Brosnan and Dalton would have been better with better-written movies (Daylights and Goldeneye being the only good ones for them).
Moore is just campy, which makes for great fun, but... its not really Bond. Live and Let Die and The Man with the Golden Gun are great fun to watch, but pretty silly. View to a Kill is worth it for Grace Jones (ugliest Bond Girl ever by far) and Walken as a Bond villain.
And Lazenby? He seemed to not take it so seriously. And he seems to regret turning down the role after Majesty.
Oh, and I love that my former marketing professor (who is Swiss) would make a perfect Bond villain. I could see him in a white snowsuit, skiing after Bond with an Uzi slung around him. :D

Sean Connery defined Bond, so he earns my vote. His British charisma, blatant mysoginism, and raw machismo made the character so great and enduring. Goldfinger is my favorite Bond movie,
Timothy Dalton made Bond a little warmer, and Pierce Brosnan followed Connery's charisma. George Lazenby played a more human and emotional Bond. All of three were good, but none can match young Connery.
I never really liked Roger Moore, even though For Your Eyes Only and The Spy Who Loved Me are two of my favorites. He was so campy and exaggerated, and most of his movies relied too much on gadgets and pratfall humor.
On Daniel Craig I withhold judgment. He played James Bond as a brute who punched his way out of danger. He lacked the charm of previous Bonds, and he gave up his job for a woman.
I liked Craig because he shows where Bond's character came from rather than just playing a caricature, but I want to see where he goes in Quantum of Solace before calling him best. "Call no man happy until he is dead."

Oh, it's right up there for me, too. In fact, it is a bit of a tie between that and You Only Live Twice; that movie just seemed such a perfect end to Connery's run...he really shouldn't have come back.
I voted for Dalton, because when I was younger and watching the Connery/Moore movies I always wondered why Dalton wasn't Bond, and then I realized that he was for a while! He and Craig share a similar, somewhat gritty style, but for now I give the edge to Dalton - that may change with Quantam of Solace (I mean, I haven't written off the new guy or the series just yet). I actually wish Dalton had a longer run than he did, since it was a nice change after Moore's exhausting and comical run.
My roommate (huge Bond fan) and I used to watch Bond movies all the time and constantly discussed the merits of all of them. I think every one brought a few perks with them.
Indeed they did...I can't really think of what Moore's was at the moment - apart from keeping the franchise from falling into obscurity, that is - but I'm sure he has something. :p

That's true, it was a big change. Then again, next to Roger Moore Jim Carrey would be dark. (I was about to say Will Smith, but that works too well...)
I think Brosnan was a really good choice after that.
