While it doesn't have a big time pedigree, Bethesda and Splash Damage's Brink was one of the hidden gems of this past E3. The developers promise seamless blending of single player, co-op and competitive multiplayer in a shooter they also describe as "massive." The above video highlights the game's S.M.A.R.T. system which lets players navigate around the war-torn hovering techno city known as the Ark.
But the news is not all good. Previously slated to release in the Spring, the video now tags it's release as Fall 2010. Are we beginning the exodus from the Q1 2010?

You know... this kind of makes you wonder why no one thought of this before? Actually, why no one has implimented this before?
I bet once the game launches they'll get sued by some patent stalker.

The S.M.A.R.T. system definitely looks cool, but I'd really like to hear more details regarding the blending of the various game types into one unified gaming experience. It seems like that idea was all the rage a few years ago with games like "The Crossing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Crossing_%28video_game%29)", but no one has yet to actually make good on the concept.
The fact that Splash Damage is sitting in the dev chair also worries me a little. They always have phenomenal ideas for game play mechanics that look great in all their development diaries (I'm looking at you Quake Wars) but when then turkey finally comes out of the oven I've been a little disappointed in both of their titles.

I saw this at Quakecon. Tons of gameplay.... truly awesome.

Oh wow, that is pretty ambitious. I can imagine it leading to some really entertaining stuff.
Has anyone else seen some of the new footage for the Aliens vs Predator game that's up and coming? The SMART system would be so perfect for it. More so for playing as the alien or predator, but as they just demonstrated it still would work good for a human type character as well.

Looks cool, but I would like it to be a little more like Mirrors Edge where your input was meaningful to how successful your acrobatics would be.
Probably SMART makes more sense for this game since it's heavy on the fps elements, but I would still like a little less automation and a little more interaction.

I am really interested in this, having gone back and played some ET:QW recently, and discovered it to be just as crack like as when I played it a year or so ago. I'm glad the two things I most liked about it are being expanded on by the team - the fluid (compared to every other MP FPS) movement, and the custom mission system - both of which made the game really interesting and sort of, naturally extensible.

I don't know, it seems a bit unnecessary since there is already the crouch-jump and alien leap attack. They just need to add some sort of slide and the ability to grip and lift yourself up a ledge and you have the SMART system without the automation.

Ya, I'd really prefer to be in complete control rather than this semi-automation. Besides the slide(why hasn't that been done before?) all the other abilities have been done in some game or other before.

As I understand it, all of the abilities exposed through the SMART system can also be bound to keys. Of course, it remains to be seen whether that's going to survive the next 12 months or not.

Yes but, playing as the alien or predator, it could account for a kind of "instinct" IDK. Just think about a climbing animal like a monkey or squirrel moving through a tree and how effortless it does it, the system they appear to have come up with could allow you to move though complex structures as the Alien with ease like you'd expect one to do so, and make epic jumps the way a Predator should be able to as well.
but I still hear ya on the automation though, I too am torn. Perhaps their could be a drawback to using it, like the Alien makes a bunch of noise when you activate it or it has a cool down / stamina meter.

I thought we already had that? It's called jump, crouch, and sprint. ;)

The way I see it is that I get more satisfaction running, jumping, and climbing over obstacles if I'm in complete control instead of one button that does all of them. In the video he said these weren't just canned animations but I was disappointed he didn't show himself interrupting the middle of one of the animations and going in another direction.
