New buttons are incoming... these are a temporary solution.

vBulletin doesn't allow for anything but .gif and you have to use the same imageset for each template unless you hard code which specific image to use in every instance it appears in the code.

I'll find a way to get it to .png so I don't have to use weird block backgrounds, but right now it appears I'd have to edit the entire piece of software to do so (and the add-on that lets you use .png files cheats and uses a redirect, causing longer load times).

For the ~4% of you using IE6: First, what the hell? Second, I know a way to cheat and make .png transparency work for you. I might not implement it right away, but hey.

Great job, and good to know the new buttons are on the way.

You should put up a list of usernames so we can publicly mock them...with .png graphics!

That's exactly what I was thinking! Damn IE6 making developers waste so much time and effort so things don't look crappy for those unwilling to let a crappy browser die.

I've decided to no longer support IE6. If an user refuse to or does not know how to upgrade his/her browser, then said user does not deserve the awesomeness of what I am presenting.

I don't even implement the hacks anymore so when an IE6 user sees all of the fubars, it's up to that user to question it. And hopefully, that path will lead him/her to making a change -- and that's how we can get rid of IE6.

Is the forum hosted on a Unix-like environment? If so, I'm curious whether you could trick the forum software by symbolically linking (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ln_(Unix)) your gifs to PNGs. I just ran a quick test in Firefox, and it doesn't have any trouble opening a PNG with a .gif filename, and Opera's the same way. They must be reading the MIME type.

Just an idea. I haven't the foggiest clue whether it'd work or not. Actually, on second thought.... if that worked, you could probably do it by just renaming your PNGs to .gifs, and somehow I don't think the forum software is that stupid. Hrm.

...and ugh... people are still using IE6? I feel sorry for them. That's not a fun browsing experience. :(

I bet some of the people who are using IE6 are surfing from work, and they work at a place that isn't exactly up to date with tech stuff.

For some reason I've never managed to figure out my friend, a web designer and general tech head, still uses IE6 and gets annoyed by Firefox. Such a weird quirk.

I finally upgraded to IE7 last weekend. I had no reason to move because I'm in bed with FF2 and all her plugins. :)

They look good so far, very consistent with site colors/banner. Nice job!

If I had to pick at the graphics on the site (and I guess I will), I'd say that the font on Lights Out! is too dark. If it was white for the standard text, I'd use it.

Some people use IE6 because it's the only version certified to work with our Electronic Medical Records software =)

My work still uses IE6. Considering the size of my company world wide, trying to make sure every web app we use (there are a lot) work with IE7 and then fixing the ones that don't isn't very cost effective.

But since I can't stand IE I got admin rights and installed FF. It doesn't work with the work Apps that are IE6 specific but at least I can browse here ok.

Edit: Oh, and I had hunted down this thread because I wanted to say I like the new buttons thus far.

Yes :) I'll move when it's most convenient. I don't expect it to take almost 2-3 years like IE7 did for me ;)

Nice work Pher!

As for IE6, I believe that my mobile phone's browser uses (or identifies as) IE6. Other than that there is no reason to use IE6 on a modern computer!

Are the new buttons here already? The ones with the orange all caps letters?

Er, if so...I donno like. Sorry! :o

LONG MAY IT LIVE!!!

Actually, you know, I've been using IE7 long enough that I should probably switch over here on my work computer.

Then again... nah, sometimes I get a kick out of bucking the trend.

If I may make a small suggestion, the close kerning on the letters, while it works on the large masthead graphic, is very difficult to read on the small buttons. I'd push the letters a little farther apart so they can be read.

I agree with that 100%. Actually, the kerning on the banner kind of bothers me as well, but I suspect my opinion there is a rare one.

It doesn't do it for me on the buttons either, but as I said, these are temp.

The kerning on the text logo is exactly how I want it.

pheriannath

The problem is that the kerning is uneven from letter to letter in the typeface itself, It's a bitch and a half to adjust it and make it look right at a small scale.

The default? I'm not generally a fan of tight tracking to begin with, but the gap between E & R is inconsistent, and draws too much of my attention (IMO). Each to their own, I guess.

Just thought I'd add that in there. And what font are you using? I really dig it. In both the buttons and the main header logo.

The new buttons are super sharp, pheriannath -- great work! The forum is going to look awesome when you've got the rest finished :)

I have a vaguely related request: is there any way to alter the "This image has been resized" banner that appears above large photos? The feature itself is absolutely fantastic, but I find the large banner notification really detracts from the image..

Either making it smaller, or - particularly for people using the Lights Out theme - more neutral/grey would go a long way toward keeping the focus on the photos, rather than that UI element.

I'm probably one of the only people it bothers, and only really began to think about it after posing in the Photography thread, but I figure it never hurts to ask ;)

pheriannath
10-21-2008, 09:34 AM
I'll look into it again, but I believe the color tweak on that particular notification is forum-wide and not per-theme. If I can get it a little more neutral, I will.

Thanks for reminding me!
