If you are reading this that means the emergency WeekDay thread has been issued. A big thank you to my cats for the assist. Some catnip is in your future. From the depths of sleep that I am sending this, what I played over the weekend while not scribbling out a paper:

Assassins Creed: Bloodlines- Finished. Game Over. Another one to the done pile. One that should be played by AC fans.

Assassins Creed 2- I might have dreamed I played some of this. Otherwise I was shut out of playing due to some paper that needs to be done so I can pass some class.

Persona 4- I made good on the pact this weekend. No shovelware in my future…yet. Only played a few hours but I can see why the love for this. P3 was great…this is even better. I tried to walk through my TV. I’m in the market for a new TV now…

How was your weekend? Filled with turkey leftovers and shopping? Or were you the others with just the shopping and just another weekend in the month? Either way, what went on and what did You play? And since I haven’t asked enough questions yet, what will you play with the week ahead?

Even your cats write in purple, you trained them well:)

AC2, which has so much shit to do I don't even know where to begin at times. Pretty awesome. Only thing lacking is the pathdfinding at times, I must have plummeted to my death a couple of times when I could swear I was properly lined up.

Ratchet CIT, my other big timesink at the moment. The most fun I had with the franchise since 2. Best Ratchet ever period..

I also checked out the GoW 3 demo at a friends. I still want it, just because it's GoW, but after playing the precise slaughter that's Bayonetta Kratos just felt sloppy and crude, also not as as polished or impressive as it could have been yet, Still, only a demo, maybe they will iron it out.

Persona 4 I didn't get to play all that much, what with our youngest not sleeping much and going to a concert (Skinny Puppy was awesome) on Saturday, but I did manage to save my first victim from the TV world. So far at 10 hours in it's Persona 3 but much more polished, though I'm not as keen on the characters yet aside from Chie.

Final Fantasy Tactic: The War of the Lions This game is perfect to play while watching mediocre football, and since I'm a Bucs fan, that's a lot of what I see. So far the new translation is excellent, and of course the gameplay is still great.

This week should see the return of my PS3 towards the end of the week, so Fallout 3 will also once again be competing for my gaming time.

Dragon Age:Origins- On my third playthrough now and finding quests or items I didn't find in the first two. I just wish there was a way to earn more money faster.

Modern Warfare 2- Mostly just playing multi, but have gone four missions in the campaign. I don't play this as much since I'm spending so much time in DA:O.

Thinking of caving in and buying AC2 from Amazon since I have some promo credits from buying other games from them. I did cave. Total price of $24.99 and free shipping.

Two games are going to occupy most of my gaming time this week.

Plants vs Zombies - This game is a lot of fun, and I can't wait to see what new plants and zombies I will encounter. It's hard to put this one down once I get started, and I love Crazy Dave.

Aquaria - This may have come out in 2007, but it is absolutely amazing and probably the best game I've played all year. It's gorgeous, fun, and absolutely huge. There are always surprises and dangers lurking around every corner, and some of the underwater creatures that I've encountered are genuinely scary! One minute I'm swimming along admiring a beautiful kelp forest, the next minute I'm swimming away from a giant, nasty seahorse as fast as I can. The main character, Nnaji, has great voice acting, and the story is genuinely interesting. There are tons of nooks and crannies to explore, and plenty of secrets to find. I'm also learning how to harvest ingredients so that I can cook!

How is AC: Bloodlines, anyway? I'm waiting for AC2 on the PC, but I'm curious about the PSP incarnation.

As for moi:

Borderlands - I'm 99% sure I'll be loading this up at some point this week. It's too damn addictive not to. Now if only Gearbox would relelase the PC DLC.

Aquaria - So very fascinating a game.

Devil Summoner - As I've said in other threads, still on Ep 2. Enjoying it, but a small part of me wishes I had pacted on Nocturne or DDS. Ah, c'est la vie.

I don't know. I didn't play much over the weekend and the same feeling of not wanting to start something is still here. I ordred NCAA Basketball 2009 from Gamefly for $5 so I will probably pop it in this week. I have not played a basketball game on any system in a very long time so I didn't want to pay top dollar for 2010. I also purchased a shit-ton of iPhone games this weekend. I do not need to sit in my house on Sunday with nothing to do but browse the app store.

I played a smorgasbord of games this weekend. Stupid Steam sale...

Lucidity (PC) - Ok. I can see why people aren't giving this game amazing reviews or anything but it doesn't seem to be worthy of the really bad ones either. It's a decent little puzzle game with a great art style and totally worth the $2.50 I paid for it. Not much more, but $2.50 was fine.

Red Faction: Guerrilla (PC) - After getting GFWL working (finally) I got to delve into the destruction porn that is RF: G. I can see why several of the bloggers that I follow loved this game when it came out this summer. It's just so satisifying to punch holes in EVERYTHING and it can be a fun mental exercise to try to see how little of a structure you have to destroy before the whole thing comes crashing down. I love my det-charges something fierce.

Dawn Of War 2 (PC) - Played a couple of missions of the campaign and some rounds of The Last Stand. Fun game that definately plays more like an real-time tactical RPG than an RTS... and that's fine with me!

Osmos (PC) - I can't get this to run on Windows 7 but it works just fine on my Vista lappy. Sigh.

Assassin's Creed 2 (PS3) - I'm back in Florence, I've started upgrading my villa and I need to find more viewpoints, statues and codex pages. Man, I love this game. Hopefully I'll be able to put more than an hour into it tonight.

L4D (PC) - Played through the first part of Blood Harvest with my son watching me and calling out zombies. Best parenting ever or BESTEST parenting ever?

I know I played a few other games this weekend. After writing up my Machinarium piece yesterday, I almost dove back into that to try to see if I could push through to the end, but instead I went back and played more Assassin's Creed 2.

And Persona 4 and Devil Summoner were calling to me as well. I might actually fire up Devil Summoner if I can get the basement tidied up today with the kids. It's a pig sty right now.

Yes, play Devil Summoner! :D

And I highly recommend RF: G. It's really fun, especially later when you get the 'special' gun and can start snipe-demolishing things. And people.

Dragon Age Origins: Having secured the Mages for my fight against the Darkspawn, I embarked on Morrigan's personal quest and discovered the truth behind the Witch of the Wilds, Flemeth. I also began Sten's personal quest to recover his sword. Unfortunately, my seduction of Leliana is on hold atm, since our hot and fiery passion for each other has made her personal quest undoable. However, all I need are a couple more trinkets, and the tent invite will be mine. Currently, we are in Denerim, performing side-quests and taking a break from the main Grey Warden mission.

Plants vs. Zombies: I'm part-way through level 3 I think. This game is a lot of fun and a nice break from DA.

Majesty 2: A nice upgrade from the original with the humor and Scottish accent intact.

PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe: I bought this for the PSP, and it feels right at home on my handheld. I've already put more time into it than PJM on my PS3.

If I have time (which I never do anymore):

Red Faction Guerrilla or Fallout 3 today.
Folklore
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (if the wife makes me--it's cute and somewhat fun co-op)

When next weekend comes, I hope to have Dragon Age here that I purchased on Black Friday.

I didn't get nearly as much gaming in this weekend due to all the stuff purchasing a house entails but there was some decent gaming done.

I'm slowly making my way through Lost Odyssey. I'm currently on disk 3. I have a sneaking suspicion this will be one of my last jRPGs. The game is good, don't get me wrong, the problem is, jRPGs just feel so archaic. I feel like the balance between running around doing things and random encounters is just aggravating when comparing to other, more western styled RPGs. We'll see how I feel when FFXIII comes out. I still have yet to play FFXII though.

I also got to play New Super Mario Bros Wii in 4-player co-op. What a clusterfuck of a good time! It's absolute chaos but if you can get everyone to cooperate, it's a lot of fun and when people don't cooperate, it's HILARIOUS.

EDIT: I almost forgot, there was a bit of Left 4 Dead 2.

The rest of my week will probably be more of the same if I can find time to play.

I played the demo for this back in late 2007 and fell in love with this. Sadly, I haven't gotten around to picking it up. Hopefully it'll be on sale during the holidays on Steam.

The plan this week is going to be:

Moar Borderlands (PC): Finally found some time for it this weekend, got to Level 21 and the second "zone," which is more fucking desert from what I can tell so far. Can't believe it took over a third of the game to enable fast travel, but okay, I'll go with it, I guess. Also can't believe how easy the second boss was; I dunno if I just got better at the game or if I was overlevelled or if he was just easy, because I circle-strafed his ass and he dropped in no time. Despite those complaints, I'm enjoying it, for the most part.

Sins: Diplomacy Beta (PC): My regular co-op buddy let me know that this was up on Impulse last night, at least for pre-orders, so we'll probably give it a poke and see how it holds up.

Since I got my PS3 over the weekend, I spent most of it playing the bundled games: Arkham Asylum and inFamous. I also bought Flower over PSN, and played through that (as well as coming back to a couple of the levels just to fly around). I love Arkham Asylum, the melee combat system is incredible; they manage to make things cinematic while keeping it engaging. There are some interesting puzzles as well, at least when it comes to the challenges that the Riddler leaves laying around. If I had one complaint, it is that it is easy to get turned around.

inFamous is a lot of fun as well. I can't imagine how much work was put into building the city, making sure every building was scalable, sometimes in fairly interesting ways. The combat is a bit iffy, I seem to rely on zapping enemies from far away, as their guns hurt... a lot.

Assassins Creed 2 & Dragon Age: I started DA when it came out but the end of semester got in the way of committing (I've played all of the origins), I'll really have to work at getting back into it now that I'm hooked on AC2. I really enjoyed the first AC (played it in parallel to Mass Effect), and they've fixed pretty much every complaint I had, mostly by focussing on stronger plot & presentation.

Like always, I continue to to play Valkyria Chronicles on and off (currently on the second map of Chapter 10), so I decided to play BioShock (PS3).

Replaying the game on the higher difficulties opened and forced me to come up with all new strategies for tackling my trip through Rapture, and relying on very few plasmids to get the job done. Even on "Medium/Hard" difficulties, Big Daddies were an actual threat. But having completed "Survivor" difficulty over the weekend, it was very challenging and rewarding. Now, I'm restarting a new game in "Survivor", since I took the easy route by harvesting all the Little Sisters and racking up the Adam, I'm going to do it by rescuing them, limiting what plasmids and tonics I can afford.

And a little Space Invaders Extreme/Extreme 2 on the side.

My weekend got completely turned around gaming-wise due to the insane deals on Steam over the weekend.

Plants vs Zombies: What the heck? How is a 5 dollar Pop Cap game so awesome? I played through the whole damn thing and loved every minute of it. I'm sure I'll be going back now to earn money and buy some of the plants that I don't have yet as well as tackle the puzzles and challenges that opened up.

Borderlands: A few of my buddies convinced me to go in on a 4 pack. We spent Saturday night playing until 2 in the morning.... after we figured out how to bypass all the Gamespy nonsense. What a fun game (although I'm not sure how much I would enjoy it by myself but multiplayer is a blast). I choose the Siren but my special power seemed kinda meh. I may switch to something else.

Left 4 Dead 2: Another 4 pack deal. (freaking Steam!) Played through two of the campaigns. The first one (can't remember the name) and Dark Carnival. I didn't care for the first one all that much but Dark Carnival was awesome. They definitely took the intensity level up a notch from the original. I felt out of breath by time we cleared the finale. Spitters suck!

Tomb Raider: Underworld: I got through the first section and started in on the Thailand level. It looks and plays just like Legend but that's not a bad thing. I'm going to need to go back and read the synopsis of the events from the first game though because I have no idea what is going on. The game feels weird after just having played through Uncharted 2. It's a lot less forgiving on the climbing and jumping puzzles. Not a bad thing, just different. The gunplay is still so horribly bad. Thankfully it isn't the game's primary focus.

Ratchet and Clank: CIT: I've got 10/40 Zonis now so I figure I'm about a quarter of the way through the game. I got the hover boots and they rock. This is a fantastic game. The Clank levels are an ingenious addition and really break up the gameplay nicely.

Persona 4: I played for around 2 hours last night in order to keep the pact. I'm intrigued by the story already and can't wait to find out what happens next. I'll echo what Gorvi said... the characters in this game aren't quite as appealing to me as Junpei, Yukari, Mitsuru, and the gang were from P3. I'm going to give it some time though. I spent so long with the others that I got attached. I also have mixed feelings on the setting. Tartarus and the dark hour were really cool / creepy. I'm missing that vibe as well. Only 2 hours in though. I'm sure I'll be singing a different tune once I scratch the surface.

Wow... that was a lot of gaming. Way more than I usually do. Man I love 4 day weekends...

Anniversary, Legend, and Underworld can practically be taken as a trilogy, and I like them quite a bit. I wish there was some more replay value, because those games have a lot of style. That developer's (Crystal Dynamics?) Lara Croft is a likeable character, and fun to play.

I don't have good feelings about the future of Tomb Raider, though. What little bit has been teased about the next game already feels like too much of a departure.

Give it time, guys. The characters in P4 are every bit as adorable as the ones in P3, if not moreso. The only quibble I'd raise is that the S.Links aren't quite as weird as in P3.

And to keep to the pact, I cleaned up my basement so I might just be able to fire up either P3 or Devil Summoner tonight. That said, I'm busy reading through the first Dragon Age book and really want to get back to the game the more I read.

I have been playing the heck out of Tiger Woods on the phone. I can slip off and get a hole or two in and I finished up a round and a half while at lunch. I am about to complete my first PGA event. My only complaint is the game is too easy. Even if I screw up the approach I can sink most puts with little effort. I guess I would rather it be a little too easy than too hard. Makes those quick holes easier to deal with.

I guess I do have one other complaint, I crash out of the game sometimes just after returning to the game and loading my PGA tour. I didn't notice that happening at all when just playing a regular round of golf.

I might be the only person on this planet who felt that way about GoW 2. I didn't feel at times the control was as precise as it was in GoW 1. I'm sure it was just me...but it's why i'm not running out yet to get GoW 3. Although I did that with both GoW anyway. I played them long after they were out.
Two games are going to occupy most of my gaming time this week.

Nice to see you gaming more Mr. Gnome...i'm going to find a way to get Acquaria too..
How is AC: Bloodlines, anyway? I'm waiting for AC2 on the PC, but I'm curious about the PSP incarnation.

It's a mini AC 1 on your PSP. If you liked AC 1, then you'll like it on the PSP. The story continues with Altair, sort of a story between AC 1 and AC 2. The game looks really nice but we don't play games just to look nice (well most of the time...). I was really surprised the game control for the most part worked well with nub. Moving the camera is a minor pain (shoulder button + square) but luckily you don't need to move the camera unless you are stationary, not fleeing or chasing someone. I have minor quibbles with the controls, which is a flaw with the whole series including on the console version...sometimes when you are rushing, Altair makes moves you had no intention of making. There are two missions that I can think of that were frustrating due to this. Again, minor quibble...but it's there. As for the what the hell you do in the PSP version...the side missions are fun enough. Nothing earth shattering, but if you are a fan they'll work for you. If you like a challenge...the "messenger" missions I found to be a royal pain. You might like the challenge against the clock. As for the story...I liked it but i'm not that difficult to please. It's AC storyline...no Desmond though...you just play as Altair. The game is a bit linear if you have no interest in the side missions.

inFamous is a lot of fun as well. I can't imagine how much work was put into building the city, making sure every building was scalable, sometimes in fairly interesting ways. The combat is a bit iffy, I seem to rely on zapping enemies from far away, as their guns hurt... a lot.
The upgrades help the combat to be a bit more bearable. It's nice to see someone else enjoy the work that went into making the environment so scalable. That was easily on of my favorite parts of the game...just to go around to find ways to climb, leap and slide along electric lines...

This is why I argue TR and UC are different games. TR is more about exploration with the combat thrown on. UC is still more shooter than exploration. Now it balanced the platforming and some exploration with the shooting...but it's still has different goals as a game than TR. And I can't wait to you proceed more into TR:U. Some great stuff ahead for TR fans...

Anniversary, Legend, and Underworld can practically be taken as a trilogy, and I like them quite a bit. I wish there was some more replay value, because those games have a lot of style. That developer's (Crystal Dynamics?) Lara Croft is a likeable character, and fun to play.

It's all rumor at this point.
http://kotaku.com/5312553/rumor-tomb-raider-reboot-art-details-leaked

Here's some highlights.
...Tomb Raider reboot sequel, which figures to be both open-world and survival horror.
...mounted Lara (on horseback, stupe) firing arrows at zombiefied creatures with gnarly, ouchy-looking appendages...
...Lara herself has a look that backs off the overt sex appeal and makes her into a more athletic, ass-kicky fighter.
Regarding the third point, I don't necessarily mind them backing off of the sex appeal, although it's too little, way too late. (Do a Google image search for Lara Croft. I dare you.) I'm more concerned about whatever comes out the other side of their ponderous machinery being an unrecognizable paste.

As for the rest, I can best sum it up by saying it could either be really cool, or really awful. Sadly, the concept sounds like it's throwing away her two buddies that were introduced in Legends. I liked those guys, and the "elite team" vibe.

Geez, how many people have to jump up and down about it at this point? How many times to I have to gush about it? AC2 delivers the goods.

I'm just glad I got my insane gushing out of the way early. It's much more fun to sit back and watch everyone else fall in love with it now.

Battlefield: Bad Company - Modern Whatfare? :p The past couple of nights I've jumped into a multiplayer match or two, then into the SP for awhile and then finish the night with a few matches. I'm having so much fun.

I beat AC2 thanksgiving morning, it was fucking fantastic!
definitely my pick for GotY.
I"m also playing a bit of the GoW collection, and boy those are some ugly cutscenes. But it's good for me to refresh my knowledge of the story before 3 comes out.
I also picked up Star Ocean: TLH used from the exchange. Only copy there, and unfortunately it seems the second disc won't install to my HDD for some reason. I think I might just chance it and keep it, since the disc seems to be in excellent condition. The game is very pretty, but this makes me so glad for custom sountracks, since not only does it cover up the soundtrack entirely, but it also drowns out most of the horrible dialogue.
And my wife and my brother's girlfriend threw my brother and I a surprise 30th birthday party, And gave me a copy of Red Faction. Man I'm only a couple hours in and I wish I could have played through it before the Multiplatform GotY voting is up because I feel this would have been a strong contender in my lineup.
Oh and some Battlefield BC 2, man, is that beta great fun.

I played the demo for this back in late 2007 and fell in love with this. Sadly, I haven't gotten around to picking it up. Hopefully it'll be on sale during the holidays on Steam.

Let me know if you pick it up! I'd love to get a bigger conversation going around the game, like what happened with Eschalon earlier this year.

There are a few areas that I cannot get to yet as I don't have certain powers, but hopefully I'll unlock new abilities soon!

Sims 3 - It's the only game I'm listing for now because in spite of my desire to play some other things too, I can't seem to stop playing this. Actually, playing may not be the right word. I'm still trying to design and build a house, and I'm determined to get to a place where I'm happy with it.

Silly extra work time. *grumble* This is definitely the sort of thing where I need a few hours just to sit down and grind it out.

One thing I will say, this stirs up some old Dungeon Keeper 2 feelings. I know, Sims 3 making me think of DK2? Nonsense! But one of the things I was so entertained by was building the dungeons.

I've been breaking out the DS at work when time permits. It's so nice to have something you can play coherently with in short bursts. I'm sure there will be some MW2 multi as well, as always. All you MW2 players lurking in this thread had better be on for MW2 Wednesday this week.

Played some Bigs 2 and Red Faction yesterday. Bigs 2 is definitely better than the first game and I've only played a little. Red Faction is destruction-porn.

I'm thinking about either running some ethernet cable (ordering a hundred feet or so) through the basement and into the living room so I can hook up the 360, or buying a bridge. The living room tv is excellent (and PS3 games look stellar) but my office is just a 32" Westinghouse and therefore I've been buying multiplatform games mostly for the PS3 because games look better on it. The other fix would be just to get a new tv, which my wife has been asking for. Put the Westinghouse in the bedroom, as that was it's original intention, and get a better one for myself. But I missed all the Black Friday sales, so I'm pretty much screwed on excellent sales probably.

Hooking the 360 up in the living room would suck in some regards because that's our family tv--having both systems hooked up would mean I can't escape to my office for gaming when the wife wants to watch one of her shows.

Dungeon Keeper is one of my all-time favorite games. I have so many fond memories of playing the original DK. The sequel was alright, although it was a buggy mess at release and EA really dropped the ball on supporting the title. The first will always have a special place in my heart. I really should reinstall it sometime.

Assassin's Creed 2 - Finished this over Thanksgiving while using it to delay working on my papers. I think it is definitely the best open world game I've every played. Does a great job of introducing new gameplay elements and making the missions feel less cookie cutter (after the first 3-4 hours anyway). Just ignore all those "Assassin," "Race" and "Beat Em Up" side missions. They are more repetitive and you don't even get any achievements for doing them.

Resident Evil 5 - I know people are probably tired of hearing me praise this game, but I finally finished all 1000/1000 achievement points. I'm toying with working on the multiplayer download stuff, but that versus stuff really isn't my bag. So I guess this will be going on the shelf for a while, at least until the add-on content comes out in March. I can't wait for that.

You don't have to do all the collectable/side missions and I recommend that you don't. There are the 4 Assassin's Tombs, which are pretty interesting. Then there are 20 Glyphs, which might be worth tracking down.

I wouldn't bother with all the feathers or the other side missions. I did neither and still managed 925/1000 achievement points. The feathers have two low point achievements attached to them, the other side missions have NO achievement points tied to them and are pretty repetitive and boring. You don't even get an achievement for finding all the "look out" points this time. The main game is long and interesting enough though. I would just ignore the bullshit filler they put in. That stuff is for bored kids on summer vacation, not for adults whose gaming time is limited.

As an adult whose gaming time is quite limited of late, I haven't found any of the side missions in AC2 to be a waste of time. Of course, I'm still quite early in the game, but I've been dragging my heels to do all of the extra stuff while only doing the story missions at the last possible moment.

I know there might not be a big trophy/achievement reward at the end of finding all of the tchotchkes in the game, but they all just feel like something important that I should be looking for. I never really got that from the first game outside of filling in the Animus and getting a full map via the viewpoints.

That said, the Races are pretty annoying. Ezio needs to stop tripping over his own feet. I found that I'd have to redo a race about 5-6 times in order to figure out the proper line to run and to keep from falling off the roof.

I'd love to get about a 40 inch one (or bigger), though that's not necessary. I sit close enough to the tube so that 1080p would probably be justified. I was using my 32" for PC and 360, but anything bigger would be overkill. I could always hook up my PC monitor again and just use an HDTV for console gaming.

But I should really be SAVING money, so unless a killer deal comes along I'll have to stay put.

F*** racing/messenger runs in AC 2/Bloodlines. I rather not hurl my controller toward a wall. I know I totally suck at many aspects of gaming but the racing/messenger parts of AC show a flaw in the game. I don't understand how the same game company can make a game like PoP with a character moves so elegantly...then have AC's character move at times like he's from a Resident Evil title circa RE 1 & 2.

There were a bunch of deals for tvs around 250-500 on BF, but the cheaper ones are of course the shittier ones.

My 46" has that damn glossy coating which makes it look like a plasma and therefore gets lots of reflection during the day if I don't pull one of the blinds. However, I don't like a lot of light on my other matte screen either. And the big tv does give out better colors because of the coating...it just sucks on a really bright summer day.

EDIT: I just got a phone call as I was typing this that my wife is getting a $600+ rebate check back from her former car dealer because she had an extended dealer warranty on her car...and since we sold the car, that warranty is a refundable service. When we bought the new vehicle, the dealership said we should call them up and ask for a refund. I'm so glad we did. But we need that $600 for other shit right now, though the first thing that crossed my mind was of course putting it towards a television. :)

Screw you, Prizefighter, and your savant ways too! Sure, Ezio moves like Ezio, and 90% of the time that's a delightful mish-mash of fluid free-climbing and almost bumbling grace. Then he tries to run a race and it's all I can do to keep him going in a straight line.

Granted, I fault the camera for that sometimes. It takes a second or two to get back behind him when you're doing a race and that's when you can lose your way unless you're familiar with the terrain.

Ah well. It's a slight gripe and not nearly as bad as I'm making it out to be. The first race I did was fine but the second was incredibly frustrating.

Well this is one of those game play mechanics that some just get past. I just read others who have had issues with movement in the game, which often is when you need to run or flee in a hurry. Doesn't mean it's a broken game mechanic totally...just enough where some notice. And compare the smooth way the Prince moves in PoP and Enzio...and yeah, I realize they have two different goals as games...but even still...I still like to ask Ubisoft...what's up with the huge difference? I think the all free moving movement in AC needs work. But I don't begrudge you that you don't have a problem controlling Enzio.

Exactly. Trying to race in an AC game is suddenly a chore. When you are moving quickly, Enzio doesn't move smoothly. The moves aren't even close to being what you want them to be. fluid free-climbing works until you have to run in any timed events. Bah, i'm nitpicking...but it's still annoying...

I got my PS3 back last night in perfect working order, so once again all is right with the world. I made sure to back up everything that matters last night that I could (too bad Demon's Souls is locked), so I won't be caught in that mess again. It's incredibly quick and easy to just copy saves over to the PSP, so I'm going to be sure that I do that regularly from now on.

I made sure to catch up on some demos that I'd missed in the past few weeks:

Gravity Crash I really enjoyed it, the game feels like a classic arcade game done very well and the music is simply great. I'll have to be sure to pick it up some time down the road.

Mushroom Wars and Comet Crash Both tower defense games essentially, each with their own unique twist. For me, that's a big no thanks, PixelJunk Monsters taught me that while the genre is interesting, it's absolutely not for me.

Smash Cars Meh. It's a remote control car racing game, not bad, but not something that screams "buy me" either.

This morning I dove back into Fallout 3, man that felt good to play again. I'm currently in Greyditch (?) killing fire ants, I think it's the quest called Those!. Fun times indeed.

Google and Craig's List. I just searched PS3 & Repair & my county, and a few things popped up. To be honest, I think I just got lucky, there are a ton of places that repair 360s (relatively, anyway), but not as many who do PS3s. I did a bit of calling around until I found one I was happy with, but even then I had second thoughts. The guy who did it is an auto mechanic who does it in his spare time, but just by going there, he seems to do it a lot for all consoles, and he knew his stuff, plus offered a 90 day warranty.

Yours is a simple drive replacement, so it shouldn't be as hard to find somewhere that can do it, as that's a bit simpler than what I had to have done I think.

And hell, best of all, I saved $75 from getting it fixed by Sony, I got my same console back with all of my files still there just fine, and I got it back the very next day. I'm very happy with it, all things considered.

I had the most amazing dinner tonight. Two fresh veggie burgers that I picked up at the co-op, topped with Bubbies bread & butter pickles, organic ketchup, and organic brown mustard. Organic tater tots* on the side.

I washed it all down with a Magic Hat beer. All while listening to Simon & Garfunkel. That actually sounds good. What kind of Veggie Burgers do you eat? I pretty much stopped eating red meat a few years ago. I have tried the Morning Star Farms Garden Veggie Patties and Spicy Black Bean Veggie Patties. I've also had Bocca original. I like the Spicy Black Bean but the others were a little less than great. I'm not sure what to look for if I start looking at 'fake' meat outside of the prepackaged stuff.

I have not played any games this week outside of things on the phone. I've decided I am going to sit down tonight and fire up Demon's Souls again. If it doesn't suck me back in I'm going to move on to Persona 4. If that doesn't work I am going to continue going through my current library until something sticks. I'm a gamer and I better start acting like one damn it.

...and great news about the PS3 Gorvi.

Amazon says that Dragon Age should be here on Friday, but I got a tracking update from USPS that says it arrived in my town this morning. So...if it's there tonight, I'll be happy. But we have a mildly ill child (some fluid in his ear the Dr. says) so I don't know if I'll have time to dick around with it tonight.

I also ordered Riddick: Dark Athena this morning from Gamefly for $10. My first real game purchase of December and we're only 2 days in.

I've never had a pre-packaged veggie burger that I was very impressed with. The ones that I occasionally treat myself to are hand made at the co-op that I shop at. I buy them at the deli counter. They are called "Burgers Florentine" and I've noticed them at a few co-ops in the area. You could probably find a recipe online. They are actually a little thicker too, at least compared to frozen veggie burgers, which is nice.

I'm glad that Gorvi got his PS3 back. I kind of wish I had one instead of my 360, which has turned into a Netflix box.

You raise a good point. I could easily go with just a PC and be perfectly happy. I bought the 360 in an effort to replace my PC, and that ended up being a bad idea.

I should just sell the 360 and put the proceeds towards the new PC that I want. Honestly, the only thing making me keep the system at this point is the money I've already invested into it. $500 for the system (I bought the elite when it came out), two years of live, 10 or so games, plus the digital games. Just thinking about it makes me want to cry.

Something $999 or under. I don't want a cheap throwaway tv, but a rather nice one. bapenguin linked to one that was an LED 120hz at $999, but I'd rather spend less than that. Probably because I don't have that much on me right now to spend on a tv.
I was at Target today. I'd keep an eye on them. They had a 40 in Sony for $800. They also had "brand names" for around that with the same screen size. If you really are looking, i think the sales will get even better. Wish I had that kind of cash...
But they're so fun to make! ;)

Well, I'm in the process of pricing components and such right now. If you are just looking for a case and components, then you can get something pretty good for around $600. The build that I'm pricing right now is approaching the $800 range, and that doesn't include a few things I need, such as speakers. I may end up spending more than I wanted to, but I think it will be worth it. Maybe I'll sell the 360 after all. :p

Oh, and plenty of sites sell pre-built systems, or you can get a "barebones" system from a site like Tiger Direct. It includes pretty much everything in the case except the video card, which you would buy and install separately. A good video card can be had for $150, which is crazy cheap!

The PC thread has some good recommendations. If you don't feel like sifting through pages of that, I believe Karak is big on Tigerdirect.com. I want to update my previous post. I've been researching computer components all afternoon (it beats laundry!) and I think I've got a good system going now for around $650. That doesn't include Windows 7, which is $105 for the OEM system. Still, if you have XP and are fine with that, $650 for a new PC is a great deal.

Of course, I'll have it paid off in a year, but it's more than worth it to be back into gaming with everything maxed out after years and years of not being able to do this.

Gorvi: Yay! Congrats on getting your PS3 fixed. Though it is kind of sad that we have to congratulate people on getting their electronics repaired and returned with no data lost...

I pulled rank today at work and left early. I only have about 30+ hours of lieu time to use at some point in the next few months so I figured I'd take half of my shift off today. I used that time to buckle down and work on AC2. Just got my third seal (in Tuscany) and it was great. I also did all of the assassination missions available in Florence which were pretty fun, esp. when I had to assassinate a bunch of guys in the midst of a rumble. The last PC I configured was in 2002. I had it built by a small company in my home town. My following two computers were a laptop (graduation present) and my current iMac, so I hadn't kept up with hardware for seven years.

Like you I had no idea what anything was anymore, but I've quickly come up to speed. Listening to the Maximum PC podcast and reading the hardware forum here have helped a lot. I feel like I have a pretty good grasp on things now.

The computer I configured isn't a super-beast, but it's more than enough to run everything that's out now and will certainly last a couple of years at least without upgrades. I can always add more RAM later or even upgrade the video card down the road if I feel like I'm getting behind. $800 seems like a lot of money, but it's not that bad considering that I'm starting from nothing. I haven't decided if I'm going to add a monitor or not, which would push me up to $1000.

Still, factoring in the money I save on PC games, how much I love PC gaming, and the fact that now I'll have my own custom system to play with, it's definitely worth the extra expense. :D

Edit - I've been working my butt off doing overtime at work, so this shouldn't even hit my budget all that hard! Then again I'm done working in a few weeks, so perhaps the extra money should have gone to savings.

Why AMD over Intel?

Price is the main reason. AMD is cheaper than Intel. An i5 setup was over $100 more than the system that I configured. Granted it would be faster, but most of the performance gains are apparently in 3D animation and video editing, two things that I have little interest in. As far as gaming goes the Phenom II is more than enough, for a lot lower cost.

Plus I've always had a soft spot for the underdog. :o

Edit - The price difference may have been closer to $150, maybe even more. I'm too lazy to double check it now.

Yeah, see, I wanted to start with a Super Beast that I could eventually make into a Paragon Of Power if need be. But I was also really trying to overcompensate for the last one where I skimped. Plus I just don't have a lot of time and energy left anymore to build a machine.

I made sure to scour the system of pretty much every piece o' crap bit of software once I got it though. That crap is awful. And thankfully I'd just bought a new monitor last spring, so that cut down a lot on the possible costs.

Do you have Broken Steel installed? Because if not, then it does.

I made a point to try to avoid the main storyline as much as possible if only because I was having so much more fun goofing around the wasteland.
I've got the Game of the Year Edition, so everything is already there by default.

EDIT: And thank you, Fallout 3, I can't get this out of my head:

I lied yesterday. I said I was going to force myself to sit down and play Demon's Souls instead of an iPhone game. Well, let's just say Dungeon Hunter was better than I expected and two hours later I realized I was not going to be playing Demon's Souls.

I think the 360 version has two discs (one base game, one DLC), but with the PS3 version you just have everything right there from the get go. The good thing about the 360 version is that if you have a friend who wants the DLC that disc can be installed to any 360 then you just play the game from the base disc like normal.

Heh.

Considering one can only be found *if you know its there*, and another is via a puzzle that gets you to an item which you then have to drag to another obscure location, they're pretty off the path.

I only managed to get one of the 3 without a guide.

Yeah, we all know what you were compensating for. ;)

There's only 3 in the game. And you'll know when you have them all, there's an achievement. You'll probably need a guide - in true asshattish fashion, two of the three can only be gotten by the average player if you're looking at a guide.

Hopefully I can find all of them with little trouble. I've been exploring every single nook and cranny, even going so far as to label the in-game map extensively. I'm so glad they let you put down markers!

I was able to make it to Rivet City last night before my son decided to wake up, effectively ending my gaming for the night. I think I'm going to try to focus on the main story in Fallout 3 for the most part, then do side stuff once I'm done. Beating the main story (Brotherhood of Steel aside) doesn't close you off from any sidequests, does it?

Heh... the main story is failboat. If anything, that would be the part I'd ignore, at least after you've gotten power armor training.

TR: Underworld for PS3 is $12.99 and Quantum of Solace PS3 is $10. 50 Cent is 360-only.

Normal, it was doable, not easy though. But I haven't maxed all my weapons yet.

Fallout 3 levels with you if you haven't hit an area yet, but if you did visit it the areas the level get's locked and you can revisit it with a higher level. At least that's what I experienced. Great way to get rid of freaking fireants:P

It would have been easier on Hard if ammo hadn't been an issue, but I was always running out of ammo, so I was forced to fight with the wrench a lot. With the RYNO, that wasn't really an issue, as the ammo pickups you get with that are enough to keep you going. That, and it plays that cool music when you're shooting for more than 5 seconds. :D

Well, hrm. I played this Bayonetta demo, or as I would refer to it the "hit random buttons and all kinds of crazy random shit happens" game. And I just don't mean crazy looking combos, I mean like, giant caskets coming up for you to shove enemies into and and a giant sandworm springing out your characters backside to devour an enemy the size of a school bus.

It sure has enough crazy Japanese quirk to keep me interest, but something just feels kinda off about the combat. The running around and dodging doesn't feel as tight as Devil May Cry. But maybe that is something you'd get used to. I just wish the demo was longer for me to find out. That extended tutorial where you were on the floating rock really doesn't count. The actual level in the subway station is all of three short battles.

Dragon Age arrived today but my son woke up after I gained control of my city elf character. So...I probably won't get to play until tomorrow night. Maybe tonight if the wife is nice. :)

While the boy slept I also took some games from my office 360 and put them on the big screen in the living room. The contrast ratio and color depth make games look MUCH better. But it's in the living room, meaning I can't game to my heart's content when the wife is home. The 32" Westinghouse has like a 500:1 contrast ratio (compared to the 10000:1 of the Samsung) and while a lot of the contrast ratio stuff is marketing bullshit, in this case it's obvious. I can crank down the brightness to make the blacks darker, but it makes the games less bright. Making it go higher makes the blacks grayish and washed out. Contrast, if I knock it up even a bit from the default makes the whites too white and loses lots of detail. The setting options suck ass and since it's a cheap tv even AVForums don't have much on it.

The TV was good for me before because it was better than nothing. But now that I play my PS3 in the living room and bounce back to the office to play the 360, I can tell the difference quite easily.

Looks like a new tv is in my future. It's sickening...we already own 2--another would be overkill. The wife does want a small cheap one for the bedroom, which is what the Westinghouse's purpose was initially until I stole it and used it as my 360/PC monitor so I could game while she was watching tv.

Grrr.

I can't even tell you what kind of contrast ratio or whatsiewhosits my HDTV has. I know it does up to 1080i and it's an Acer, but beyond that, I have no idea. It is ok, but I think it has a bit of burn-in (grr) and the picture quality is good, but not amazing. That said, I bought it back before I had much of a clue what kind of specs to look for in an HDTV and it still serves me well. That said, even my wife is starting to notice the burn-in which prompted me to make an ill-advised comment like, "So, time to look for a new TV, eh?"

That couch sure is comfy...

Oh, and remember how this morning I was twiddling my thumbs at work and looking for something to do? Boy howdy, have I had my wishes fulfilled. Grumble grumble.

I just don't let them watch the awful shows. :) Spongebob isn't that bad, and I've started slowly getting my older son (he'll be 3 in January) interested in watching The Science Channel and the Smithsonian Channel with shows on historic cities, the ocean, and space exploration. Reading about how Kelegacy is buying all these cheap games has me itching to buy more...despite I really shouldn't. The insanity has me wanting Shellshock 2:Blood Trails. Is it a bad sign that I can't stop doing everything in AC2 except the story missions? I basically clear out a city of every optional thing (feathers aside) before moving on to the next story mission. I'm going to take 40 hours to beat the bloody thing.

I did the same thing with AC2, Spigot. You'll never be wanting for cash, upgrades, etcetera. And when you do get around to the next story mission, it makes it even more satisfying, like dessert. It's the way it was intended to be played as far as I'm concerned.

If you set the story aside, some of the side assassination missions were more interesting than the main ones.

Purple, QoS isn't great. My copy was $10 and it came with a free 007 shirt, which is actually quite comfortable and I wear it on the weekends or as an undershirt. I traded the game in immediately after playing. It's okay, just not exceptional. I haven't even seen the movie because of that game.

I've been intrigued by Shellshock because of the zombies, but it's still supposed to be terrible. (though I am forgiving of shooters more than any genre) Turning Point had a great premise but felt like it was made in a garage.

I'm trying to swear off certain cheap games (the unanimously bad ones) because if I stayed away from 3 $10 shitty titles it would almost buy one good one. But the trade-off is I don't like to spend $30 or more on a game that is short. That means most games these days.

The game is short. But as you say sometimes...if you buy a game cheap enough...it really depends on how much you like the experience in TR games. I'd say if you liked legend, you'll like TR:U. But it's short. Is it s a fun ride? Yes. But if you felt gyped playing TR:L because it was short...and that is your only complaint...i'd say pass on playing. But TR:U is a gorgeous game, some of the best platforming adventure you will experience. The puzzles are never stupid, instead intuitive never forcing you to feel you'll never figure them out. Now if you wanted to gift it to someone...yeah, a good gift to a family member.

If that was on the 360 I woudl definitely buy it. I haven't played Uncharted 2, but for for all the hoopla the original Uncharted got, I thought TR: Legend was a better game by a good margin. Without a doubt, Uncharted had a better narrative presentation, but TR: Legend gave you a much better sense of exploration and didn't make you play a crappy Gears clone to get to the good stuff.
