It's Black Friday, and man do I have a deal for you. Just for reading this thread - just for being here - you get a game for FREE! For nothing. Nada. Zero dollars. Gratis. On the house. It's comped. And you didn't even have to get up at 4AM and wait in a big line! Do we know how to treat you guys or what?

It appears that I've been on a speed kick with my free games, of late. You may remember that in Issue 20 (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?t=13091), I brought you RunMan, the heartwarming story of a little star-shaped dude who wanted nothing more in the world than to run like the wind; to get the high score; to win the race.

Igneous (http://www.igneousgame.com/index.html), on the other hand, is a slightly less heartwarming but considerably more pulse-pounding story about a tiki totem who wakes up one day to find that his entire world is collapsing in fire and brimstone, and if he doesn't seriously book it, he is toast so move your ass. It's like RunMan, as directed by Michael Bay.

Whipped up by a group of seniors of the Digipen Institute of Technology (http://www.digipen.edu/) (for more products of Digipen students, check here (https://www.digipen.edu/gallery/games/)), Igneous is about tension, and panic, and looking really good, and sort of about physics, but primarily it's about speed. Out of control, oh-God-where-do-I-go-now, just-barely-surviving-each-jump speed. Did you play Mirror's Edge? (If not... play Mirror's Edge.) Remember the parts where Faith would be running from 20 soldiers, and a helicopter, and you knew that stopping meant instant death so you just threw caution to the wind and ran, taking each jump as it came and praying that you landed somewhere safe? Igneous is a whole game of just that. Those prone to anxiety need not apply.

If there's a distinct problem with this sort of level design, it's that it can quickly become overwhelming. When everything is a huge overblown spectacle, overblown spectacle quickly loses its impact. Luckily, Igneous is polite enough not to overstay its welcome - it's a tasty dessert of a game, over after just three insane levels, leaving you perhaps not feeling exactly sated but definitely glad you indulged. The last level does lend itself a bit to requiring memorization, but with a game this short I can't really complain. "Normal" and "Impossible" difficulties are offered - on Normal, the game is lenient with letting your tiki make some missteps and still survive, but on Impossible, you'll need to be pretty much flawless, especially on the last stage.

A final note: this game is beautiful. Not "for a free game", just beautiful, period. Colored lighting and heat distortion are used to great effect to represent the crumbling volcano you're rushing through, and the physics system allows everything to fall apart around you, creating new paths and destroying old ones in an instant. Screenshots really can't do it justice; you should see this game in motion. The developers recommend an XBox 360 gamepad, as do I (sadly, other gamepads won't work unless you have key-mapping software), but mouse and keyboard can be used if that's what you have.

Igneous is:

blazingly fast.
incredibly pretty.
quite the challenge, on "Impossible".
a bit of a tech demo, but well worth your time.

Igneous is for Windows PC's - go check it out here (http://www.igneousgame.com/index.html).

Since it doesn't seem to want to tell you how big the download is anywhere it's 114mb... i got about 15 minutes of fun out of it. Enjoyable distraction :)

Thanks Hotcod, I would've included that but I installed it a couple weeks ago and didn't have the install file sitting around to check anymore ;) Glad you enjoyed it! I probably got 20 minutes or so out of it my first time through, and then another half hour before writing this up as I tried Impossible mode out.

I don't think I can run this, which is kind of sad. :(

I loved the game, but that damn bridge level is broken. I don't care what anybody says. Just spent the better part of a half an hour trying to get past it and gave up. As a student developed indy game this is amazing though. Well worth downloading!

The bridge level is frustrating, yes, but it's beatable. I got through it both on Normal and Impossible modes.

The final level, on Impossible, I gave up on, but I might go back to it at some point.

I don't know if I accidentally selected impossible my first time around but the bridge kept having eruptions come up from below it. The second time I loaded it up I just had to worry about fireballs from above and I was able to pass it.

I can't even imagine the last level on Impossible. There's so much debris in your face towards the end you can't even really see where you're going.

Coooool. Hi Will.

Are you ever going to accept my friend request on Steam? I sent it at least two weeks ago! :(

Registered here just to say how much I love this game!

It's like the same rush I used to get from the Death Star sequence in the original Star Wars game, but with everything falling apart around you... 2nd stage on 'impossible' mode is ridiculously hard but just hilarious when you get a good rally going. Be nice if there was a difficulty level inbetween cos well, it really is pretty much Impossible on the other levels!

Amazing game - I just wish there was more! Can anyone recommend something similar?

neophyte - thanks for the kind words! Glad that you like the game and the column. :)

For similar games, it depends what it is exactly about the game that you like. For other games that involve reckless speed and struggling to remain in control, I would recommend Solipskier (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?t=19086) and RunMan: Race Around the World (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?t=13091) (also mentioned in the article above).

If you like feeling like you're running ahead of an imminent disaster chasing at your heels, Dino Run (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?t=9584) is a pretty good choice, and though we've never featured it here, Canabalt (http://www.canabalt.com) also captures that pretty well.

If you happen to have an iPhone / iPod Touch, there are two games called Hook Champ (http://toucharcade.com/2009/10/17/hook-champ-swings-to-the-app-store/) and Super QuickHook (http://toucharcade.com/2010/06/16/super-quickhook-review-%E2%80%93-the-spiritual-successor-to-hook-champ-now-with-blast-processing/) that are excellent examples of the same genre - sadly I don't think versions of those exist on the PC right now, though.

Hopefully some of those will tickle your fancy, if you haven't tried them yet. :) Thanks for reading!

I'm glad this thread got necro'd! I can finally give this a try on my "new" rig.

Hi thanks so much for your detailed reply! I've been checking out those games (plus a few other links I came across in the process). Sadly I don't have an iphone but I enjoyed trying those - although I couldn't get Runman to work properly (glitchy audio, controls not responding right - might be my Win7 x64 setup)

However, I still haven't found anything that gives me that crazy twitch rush of Igneous - it's kinda like the vibe I used to get off Robotron or Defender, but in glowing 3D - incredible!

Now I think about it, another 3D game I really got into a while back was Serious Sam (and sequels) - I guess I really enjoy that arcade style total mayhem thing :) Most modern games I try seem be too concerned with sneaking around or solving puzzles or some crap. I just want escapist, edge of my seat chaos with hundreds of enemies or twitch moves you don't know how you made!

PS. Just came across your blog I'll be subscribing.

Thanks! It's updated - well, erratically ;) - but as more people find and like it I'm sure I'll be guilted into writing more. :p

Let us know how it works for ya! :)

It took me nearly two weeks, but I finally played the game tonight. It's great! The action is intense, and instills a real sense of panic in me as I scramble to roll away from danger while dodging giant stone blocks and pools of lava.

I really wish I had a controller I could use to play this game.

The music definitely had me shaking my butt. :D

I ended up giving up on the last level after dying over and over again. Still, it's a fun little game.

Glad you like MagGnome - totally awesome game, I still can't find anything to match it... totally OT I tried out Civ5 recently which was amazing but I had to uninstall! -- too many hours lost mid-week!

So I've been fooling around trying to find some arcade mayhem for short gaming since... still nothing grabbed me much. :/

I hope Igneous becomes a full game! I wrote the developers but no reply :(

Any chance any of your designers got jobs at Sonic Team?

They could use the help. :D
