View Full Version : Recommend me a Blu-ray movie

Ok, I really want to like Blu-ray... I really do. I'm trying really hard but so far I'm not even close to being impressed with it. When I first got my PS3 I rented Batman Begins because I heard that it looked fantastic on Blu-ray but when I started to watch it, it just looked like an upscaled DVD.
So I'm going to go to blockbuster tonight and get another one but this may be my last time before I give up on the format for good. So recommend me that one Blu-ray title that blows all else away, one that looks great and is a good movie one that shows that Blu-ray is leaps and bounds all else.

Iron Man and Transformers were meant for HD, and look fantastic. I had already purchased the Transformers DVD and thought that it looked great just being upscaled. The blu-ray version is that much more crisp and clear than I thought it could be. Genuinely surprised me.
Flags of Our Fathers and The Fifth Element are also great.

I could barely stand Transformers when it was in the theater but I haven't seen Iron Man since the theater so I'll maybe give that one a shot. I could get Flags of our Fathers... but I'm afraid with the Fifth Element considering they fucked it up and had to do a double dip on it.
Planet Earth (http://dsc.discovery.com/convergence/planet-earth/planet-earth.html)
I have Planet Earth on HD-DVD so I'm going to guess that the Blu-ray version isn't going to impress me that much in comparison.

Iron Man, Fifth Element, New Hulk movie would all be good choices.

They actually did a replacement program for The Fifth Element, see here (http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/705). That was the first thing I checked too. The one cool feature with watching videos on the PS3 is it shows the codecs used. Once I saw AVC, I knew it was a new copy.
I do know that Transformers isn't really for everyone, still the visual quality is there, and the BD-Live is pretty cool. It's a HUD showing all the Transformers, and information about them. Also lets you know when one is damaged or killed. Iron Man has pop-up trivia for it's BD-Live.
And if you don't have the HD-DVD version, the 5 disc set of Blade Runner is a bargain at $35 regular price. Though, it still is 3 BD discs and 2 DVDs (last I checked)
Keep your HD-DVD of Planet Earth though, I think that's the only HD one with Richard Attenbourough doing the narration.

How about something like House of Flying Daggers or Hero (if you're into those types of movies)? If not, they're at least very cool to watch.
A friend bought a Sony XBR4 when it was first released, and House of Flying Daggers on Blu-Ray looked amazing, but less epic because the refresh rate was so high that it reminded us of a Chinese television drama.

Blade Runner. Best film ever made, made better.

I cannot, in good conscience suggest someone buy these movies. It makes DVD prices at FYE look like sales.
Bump up your Netflix account, and go nuts.

I'm curious what kind of setup are you using? What kind of TV, what wires, are you going through a receiver for video, stuff like that.

The only two Blu Rays that make me want the format are The Godfather (Coppola Restoration) and that complete Matrix set.

So far, I've only owned two Blu-Ray movies: Talladega Nights (came with the PS3) and Superbad (gift). I've since sold both (for being possibly the worse things ever put on film), and haven't added anything else to my collection since - at almost double the price (in some cases), it just doesn't seem worth it to upgrade from DVD.
So, until the price goes down, I don't think I can really recommend anything.

Absolutely. Worth having a Blu-Ray player for this movie alone.

Well, that's a bit more competent a response than I'd expect from a Superbad fan. ;)

2001: A Space odyssey. Even if you are too stupid to like it, it looks awesome on your big-ass TV.
...for being possibly the worse things ever put on film...
You sir, have no taste!
EDIT: Blade Runner collection is awesome. Matrix collection is great just for having Animatrix in HD. God I want it so bad! Release a stand-alone damnit. Also, The newer releases have the same MSRP as DVD's, though they are never the same price. Oh, and when it releases, Dark Knight!

I think Casino Royale looks fantastic on Blu Ray. Other than that, I think this thread has already covered most of the highlights of my collection. Iron Man, Transformers, and I think Curse of the Golden Flower looks spectacular.
The Pirates films also look really good.

Go here (http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/reviews_video.html). Sort by 5 star video quality and find a movie you like.
I've watched SD-DVD's on my PS3, which is supposedly a great upconverter, and I've watched Blu-Rays. The Blu-Rays always win in my mind.
High Def discs always look better to me. Of course, I notice the difference on my 50" more than on my 37", but the sound quality alone is worth the high definition price tag.

If my taste ran towards an endless stream of dick jokes like those movies, I should consider cutting out my tongue.

If you aren't seeing anything special in Blu-Ray, I still think this is a legitimate question.

I am sorry, it wasn't the dick jokes, it was the general tomfoolery that men indulge in when they are together. Of course, you wouldn't know anything about that :p
I am talking about Super Bad. Will Ferrel can be funny. He just doesn't want to be.

I was really impressed watching 300 on a friends set up. Ridiculously sharp looking.
I've also seen Iron Man, Matrix, and Batman Begins. The only two I was really impressed by were 300 and Iron Man.

I can Immagine that unless you are watching Batman in a pitch black room on a projector, or in a pitch black room with a Plasma, the greying out of the shadows and the overall darkness gets lost.

But Super Bad was complete garbage. The man has impeccable taste, and is absolutely correct :p
EDIT: As for BR picks - of those that I've seen mentioned here, and have seen on BR myself - Blade Runner and The Prestige are both great. Blade Runner on BR looks amazing.
I'm also curious about your answer to Mr. Murphy's question about your setup -- there are a lot of factors that go into making sure you're getting the best picture with these new components, and if you're not seeing what all the fuss is about, it's possible there's something out-of-whack.
It's also possible that people have different opinions about things ;)

That's an oxymoron...with the amount of post processing done to that movie to achieve the intended look it's almost impossible for it to be sharp.
300 is actually a movie that many videophiles recommend that you DO NOT demo your setup with.

Damn, valid movie. Sure, the content may have been meh, but I'll be damned if the visuals weren't downright crazy colored. Good for a rental though, not really a purchase.

I agree with this, I have it on BR, and while it does look great, the fact that it's Hi-Def just means you can see all the grainy post-processing - it's like the noise effect from Silent Hill, only you can't turn it off. Like in Homecoming. WTF.

Good for a rental though, not really a purchase. for an early-summer popcorn movie, it gets a solid C from me. Which is pretty good considering most summer movies of the kind are all really pretty and have zero content.
Another thought on the format.
We have ONE (1) disney/Pixar movie, Cars and looks awesome! It was literally the first time my wife took notice of the HD format. Plus, Pixar makes fantastic movies. Actually Disney as a whole seems to have top-notch releases. So, you might want to start there.

Cassino Royale and Blade Runner.
If you like animation get the Pixar movies, Cars and Ratatouille looks amazing. I will replace all my Pixar's DVDs for Blu-ray as soon it became available.
