View Full Version : Next Blizzard MMO Will Not Be a WoW Sequel

It shouldn't be a surprise that Blizzard is working on an additional MMO to further bolster their efforts to accumulate enormous wealth. But with a Starcraft II and Diablo III in the works, what other IP does Blizzard have available for a new MMO? Well, it's definitely not going to be WoW 2.

"So let's just say it's going to be different and it's not going to be a sequel to World of Warcraft. It will be different. We're not trying to replace World of Warcraft with this new MMO. We're trying to create a different massively multiplayer experience, and hopefully World of Warcraft will still be going strong when that one is released."Why does this remind me of a Penny Arcade comic (http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2006/06/16/)....?

Systems of StarCraft (my title) would sound pretty cool, but still wouldn't get me to play an MMO. StarCraft would be more of a PvP and RvR type rather than the PvE they seem to have cultivated.

Starcraft would be hard to pull I think. Who would want to be a zergling, when you could be a Hydralisk? I would love a good space mmo, maybe something a la Planetside.

I am almost inclined to think it will be Diablo based or an entirely new IP.

Blackthorne MMO, obviously.

Could Lost Vikings work as an MMO? Even if the answer is "no", I still want another Lost Vikings game.

I'd love to see Blizz take a shot at the Starcraft MMO they actually announced as an April Fools joke a few years back.
I knew it was a joke while I was reading it, but I couldn't help but think "damn, this sounds really good!"

Warcraft III was still in the works when World of Warcraft was announced, so I don't think the announced games reduce the chance of a Starcraft or Diablo MMO.

As I believe that Diablo and Starcraft are set in the same universe (just at different time periods), I think it will be an MMO covering a period in-between.

I see your user name, but I can't help but wonder what you're smoking. ;)

Has Blizzard started printing their own money yet?

Whens an updated Blackthorne game coming!?

My money is on them taking a small team and remaking Lost Vikings. That was a great puzzle game.

An MMO Lost Vikings would be interesting indeed.

This new game was mentioned during Blizzcon, and MMO Champion (http://www.mmo-champion.com/index.php?topic=20436.0) states that it will be set in a "brand new universe."

I am not sure if that means "completely new," or "different than WoW," but I assumed the former (which would rule out all the suggestions above).

I was playing a bit of King's Bounty this morning and I realized that I would LOVE to play a single player game made out of the Wow engine. I know morrowind and Oblivion fall into this category but I've never really enjoyed them for some reason.

Any games like that that you guys can think of? Controls like WoW's with big open worlds to explore?

God I miss WoW :(

It's called an 'RPG (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_role-playing_game)'.

I've actually thought that myself quite a few times over the years. I loved EQ and WoW, but I hated paying to play it every month. Since I tend to go solo it would be nice to have an offline RPG that is just as big and epic as WoW or EQ. Oblivion seems to be the closest to that but I haven't played it yet.

Before WoW, if you had asked what Blizzard property they would turn into an MMO, Diablo would be at the top of that list, not one of their RTS franchises.

Plus, what is an MMO these days? Lots of people in one place trying to get quests done.

I hope you're right. I'd much rather see something new come out of Blizzard than even a Starcraft MMO. They have enough money to take the time to make a new universe.

Well I can't think of any WoW classes that are directly pulled from WC3 units, besides of course the Death Knight and whatever other "hero" classes come out. I would imagine something similar happening in a Starcraft MMO, where they take a lot of liberty between what we saw of each species in the RTS and what classes we get in the MMO. I will admit they'll have to get pretty creative, especially because there's not quite the spread of races in SC that WC has. It would have helped if Blizz had added a race or two like they did with WC3.
