View Full Version : Display woes - can't get 1920x1200

Okay, so I bought this monitor today (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?t=1297). Beautiful monitor that I can't seem to get to run in anything more than 1920 x 1080. I don't even get the option to run higher than that, even tried to create a custom resolution that fails. I have an 8800GT which has a max resolution of 2420x ??? whatever.
Has anyone run into this situation? I've heard that running through the VGA port that it may correct the issue. My problem is that my card only has 2 DVI outputs, so that doesn't work (tried a DVI-VGA connection).
So...before I try the great rollback of drivers or actually purchase a new video card (4870 is beckoning me), has anyone run into this problem?

By "can't get it to run" do you mean the display setting is not available? You change the settings but they do not stick? Or you make the setting and everything goes wacky? Also are these things you are doing in the desktop(right clicking on it and hitting properties/same as display in control panel) or with the video card's little system tray app?

Can't get to run =
- no option to go above 1920 x 1080.
I'm thinking it's a driver issue, either a monitor driver, video driver, or Vista driver...I'll crack this one yet...
Tried both the Nvidia display and the Vista display options, no luck there...really weird...I'll update this after I try some re-install...definitely close to the time for a Vista re-install.

Have you unistalled your display drivers, and reinstalled them?

Max resolution is supposed to be 2560x1600 (http://www.evga.com/products/moreInfo.asp?pn=512-P3-N806-A1&family=GeForce%208%20Series%20Family)
Resolution & Refresh
240Hz Max Refresh Rate
2048x1536 Max Analog
2560x1600 Max Digital
Yah, it's late..and I'm frustrated. I've uninstalled and re-installed the drivers. Taking the long way to completely clear everything out. Went back to an Nvidia driver from last year to see if it was a new issue. I'm thinking it's just getting confused with with my old monitor...so...considering it's time to do a Vista re-install, I'll try that and see what happens.
Just trying to document it just in case someone else runs into this issue...such a gorgeous monitor, I want to maximize it's usage ;)

Listings for this monitor have it pegged at 1920x1200. Its pretty rare that a 24" will do above 1920 but you're still missing 120 px vertically.
Tried updating the monitor drivers instead? XP has something like "hide modes that monitor cannot display". Dunno about vista.

This monitor does 1920x1200 at max. Weird that it's stuck at 1080p, though.

Yah, it's odd. Before I wipe stuff though, I just remembered I have a laptop with XP available so I'm going to attach the monitor to that and see.
Edit. Dang. Re-installed Vista and the newest drivers. No dice. So, I'm going to try a different video card or else i'm going to return this monitor. :(

Set it to single display mode and then try.
Don't futz around with vga, DVI will work fine. You're dealing with a) a software issue, or b) a display that is misreporting itself via plug&play.

It is single display mode.
Last night, I was thinking it was Vista, Samsung or NVidia. From all the digging I did, it may be NVidia. The Samsung driver reports it as 1920x1200, but the latest NVidia driver (and older rollbacks) from both NVidia and E-VGA both don't seem to do much, even after trying the E-VGA solution of a driver cleaner program.
Samsung was pretty worthless with support..."Buy a new video card".
I re-installed Vista, no go. Going to try an XP laptop tonight.
Tried new cables and switching ports...no go.
Going to grab a 4870 (or 4850 if my PSU isn't up to it) and see if that solves the issue, by going ATI.
Otherwise, I'm returning the monitor or trying a replacement monitor.

Return the damn monitor and buy a new one.

Well...I'm unsure if the monitor is the problem? Can a monitor not allow a video card to display a higher resolution? Even if I disable the checkbox that hides resolutions the monitor can't display?
I'm going now to get a 4850 card...if it works, I'll return it and get a 4870 and a bigger PSU (don't want to replace the PSU if I don't have to tonight).
Otherwise, I found this nice utility called Powerstrip (http://entechtaiwan.net/util/ps.shtm) that may help me figure out if it's a EDID issue with HDCP over DVI or something. It should at least help me dig into the drivers.

Since we're on it, how are ATI's vista drivers? I am thinking about going vista but unsure about the driver support!

No idea yet. My local stores are sold out of 4870's. They should have one in for me tomorrow :). From what I hear, they're no better or worse than NVidia's.
ps...brought the monitor back in...apparently it was a mixture of NVidia Vista driver's and the monitor's firmware (worked fine on XP because the NVidia drivers aren't so hard core about checking the monitor's EDID)

I did try those when you mentioned them elsewhere. Seem really neat. I'll definitely be installing them when I get my new card.

Be sure to uninstall the stock drivers. No auto update is so Windows will noy put them back on. Also just good general advice. Seriously try them now and see if it fixes your conflict.

Nah, I tried them already...from a fresh re-install. It is/was a hardware/software issue...a perfect storm of issues. They are ordering me in a new monitor as I type this :)

Try downloading some drivers off Samsungs site for the monitor. When I got my 24" Samsung, I THINK I had a similar issue (I think) and I resolved it by simply installing the drivers...
Pretty sure I did...

Yah. I tried those too. The monitor had no problem when tried on XP SP3, but the two Vista machines I tried with both sets of drivers had the same issue.
Oh well. It's in the hands of NCIX's service department now.

And that is why I absolutely HATE ATI.
Finding drivers was a total bitch, and only found them through a link from a friend.
Bad experience.

Windows update will find your drivers for you or the company web site. Or go with Omega.
How did you have issues finding drivers?

Problem has been fixed :)
Monitor was faulty...hardware issue.
Also works fine with my new ATI card, so that problem is fixed as well :)
They didn't believe me at first, but a couple of days after I dropped my monitor off another guy had the same problem...
So, watch out with these monitors, apparently there are some bad batches out there. I'm just ecstatic to be playing in full 1920x1200 now :D

Have fun upgrading every 18 months, I know I do. Gotta say, After getting my large widescreen, I cannot imagine playing on anything else. COH is amazing at high res.

I should stop visiting this board. When I build my system last summer it was because my last one was fucked. Now, its a Mid-high range gaming PC. Now I want a huge ass monitor. You guys are the PC gaming devils!

Come to the Dark Side, Luke...ahem...<cough> <cough>
Yah, it's fun. Neverending, but fun. I knew I would have to upgrade my video card with this monitor, but I tried to resist it...that lasted about 3 days.
