Are there any good ones?

By and large IME it seems to be largely dominated by terrible EA ports, which is a shame, because I wouldn't mind having at least a good football game to play for it.

What's out there that isn't terrible?

FIFA 09 is out for the PC. You did say football. ;)

I've always enjoyed their ports of NHL and FIFA (even if the graphics never seemed to keep up)

NBA 2k9 is budget priced at 20 bucks or less. I know that EA has NHL 09 out, 2K does not have a hockey presence.

Madden was pulled off of the PC some time ago.

Getting out of the team sports. Sierra 3d Mini Golf on Gametap is a lot of fun.

Threadspace Hyperbol is sort of a futuristic style sport game.

There are also the racing titles like Trackmania, Trials, Pure.

The PC is also the home for most of the manager/coaching sims.

If he wanted something boring and stupid, he'd have just said soccer outright.

Out of the Park Baseball (http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/cms/index.php?page=ootp-baseball) is pretty awesome if you're into baseball stats and management. Of course, there's Championship Manager (http://www.championshipmanager.co.uk/) if you want a more worldly sport.

Text sims may not be your thing, however. It's definitely an acquired taste.
