Knitting is badass. Beth is a freaking yarn monster.
I tried making myself a Slytherin scarf once and it turned out abysmal. I'd be better suited just buying a bunch a yarn and wrapping it around my face. Though when I was a wee one I did use one of those store-bought-kit-things to make an over holder for my mom. It was awesome.

Alls I have ever successfully knitted was a scarf for my mom, and then a bunch of scraps for my cat to destroy.

I have all this freakin yarn that I feel like I am never going to use...I wear bandannas, and was knitting a pretty cool ridiculously fluorescent green one, and then I screwed up and ripped it out in frustration.

Guys are QQing because they think it's too "pointy" but the don't understand that being a knitting item will curve it out a lot.
I think it's beautiful.
A knitting friend suggested a better way to make the hair for yours. This is going to be so funny.
I do a lot of pixel art, which is essentially (exactly) what you are doing with these patterns... if you wanted it slightly less pointy I bet I could do that. But if it will work out in the knitting, don't worry about it. Still (looking down) it could use a little of a bulge and then a rounder tip.
All in all it looks like a very good depiction of a penis scarf :)

The increases will be on the inside not on the edge, so it will come out nice and round. If I was to make a knitted circle I would do it like this.
I've also been informed that "a peener scarf is incomplete without a spurt" so I'll be adding a spurt to it. LOL.

While I am a big *ahem* fan of the penis scarf and other assundry naughty bits in yarn as well as the awesome controller blanket, I have to say I'm shocked. Shocked that a knitting thread could exist without mentioning the granddaddy of all knitting schemes:

I am making a black k2p2 scarf for me for when I go to NYC in January, and I really want to put some Batman logos on it. I found one awhile back, but I dont think it would fit right. I cast on 32, if anyone ever finds one that works.
Alatheia
10-08-2008, 10:05 AM
Images don't work too well in ribbing. You'd have to put the image on only the part that stands out, which would only give you 16 stitches to work with and that's a bit small for a logo to really look good.
If you want to do a yellow scarf with the logos on the end I have a chart (not on the comp though) that'll work great :D

Typical_Micahel, my wife made me a Batman cup cozy. She can't sell it because of licensing issues, but it is awesome. I should take a pic of it and post it up.

I am just learning to knit... so can anyone suggest any good books for beginners?
Allimonster
10-16-2008, 08:42 PM
The Stitch N' Bitch books were what I used to learn to knit. They have great instructions that aren't too technical ("stick it in the part that looks like a butt" and such) and lots of pretty basic projects that look a lot harder than they are.
Debbie Stoller wrote them - there's quite a few out there now. Go with the original, though.

Thank you! They look pretty awesome :). I realized really quickly that I am not nearly as coordinated as i thought I was. That being said I have been practicing just the plain knit pattern on a scarf to work on my coordination...so far it is erratic and looks like a 6 year old is doing it. My husband is enjoying laughing at me.

My girlfriend wants me to point any knitters to Ravelry (http://www.ravelry.com). It's a beta site, so you have to wait for an invite, but once you put your email in there it's only a four day waiting list.
She says it's the best knitting community on the web, and I have to say from looking over her shoulder, the forum is impeccably designed (in fact, we could take a few of their ideas, like the 'radar', which shows new posts as they appear, all on one screen, so you don't have to jump from thread to thread to keep up).
Anyway, she's on there as Stegosaurus Rex if anyone wants to friend her. She says she's learned a ton just from being on the site.
She's knitting me some fingerless gloves right now - kindof like yarn gauntlets.

I would have friended her, if that was her name on ravelry... search turned up no users.
Another resource for learning new knitting stuff is http://www.knittinghelp.com/. They have videos on there so you can watch someone do it then attempt for yourself. :D

I just picked up Teach yourself Knitting Visually...I'm a very visual person, so this book is really good for me. It has color photographs, instead of drawings, and sooo many stitches. You should see my practice piece, it's kinda cool. But that's the main thing I was looking for, I've caught on to knit and purl but that's as far as my itty bitty beginner's book took me.
Anyhoo, I just finished my first project (scarf for my stepdaughter, she seems to thoroughly like), and am now working on a Doctor Who scarf for Strax. I've already screwed it up slightly, but hopefully not too noticeably.

Knit and purl are basically it. Everything else is just variations of them, or a combination of them.

My wife is currently knitting me a scarf and I saw that last night and told her to just drop that project and get to work on this. She told me that she saw it already via a craft blog she follows and put it on her list to do "at some point in the future". I'm hoping that translates to "Christmas 2009". :D

Funny enough, I talked a friend of mine into knitting or crocheting (she can do both, and I'm not toooooo picky) me a pair of fingerless gloves, so that I can play guitar with warm fingers. So excited to get those. The trade is, incidentally, that I have to learn to knit, and make a simple, baby-sized beanie, and donate it. To babies. (Via the local hospital.) Should be next weekend that this exchange takes place.
The other trade option was I could have taken her out for ice cream, but I'm lactose intolerant, so that wouldn't be very fun.

Oooh, a knitting thread. :)
I just started to learn how to knit back in January. After about 5 or 6 times of starting over due to a mess up I couldn't fix (I had a good 5 inches knitted at that point), I finally finished my first project (a scarf) in April. Currently, I am in the process of a simple baby blanket for a friend, and I have a hat lined up for the next.
If any of y'all are interested, I'm on Ravelry as well (tortiekat on there, too). Just need to update my stuff there at some point.
