Coffee doesn't do much for me. That isn't to say I don't drink it, because I drink it like it's going out of style, but it seems like the caffine doesn't really affect me. When I put sugar in it, that's different, but I usually just drink it black.

I like coffee. I'm not really much of a snob with it like I am with beer. I'll drink Folgers or the spendy stuff, whatever is there. I started smoking cigars recently and discovered that they go phenomenally well with a steaming cup of joe.

All you coffee shop drinkers (Starbucks, Caribou, local coffee shop, etc.) you should pick up a reversible (and reusable) Cozy Corset Cuff (http://www.cozycorsetcuff.com) for yourself (there is elastic instead of the tied ribbon) or the females in your life.

Yes, this was a shameless plug. My wife and her friend make these, there are plenty more available than what is in the shop currently. Just haven't had the time to do pictures.

Get rid of the cardboard and go fabric that won't burn your hand!

I drink one cup of coffee every day. Have since I was 10 years old.

I love, LOVE coffee!

A properly brewed coffee from freshly roasted beans is right up there on the scale of magical culinary experiences with your fine wines, artisanal cheeses, white truffles, etc. -- and at a tiny fraction of the cost. I fucking love it.

I brought one of these home recently, and it's been in almost constant use around our house ever since:

http://www.jlhufford.com/images/ascaso-dream-aluminum.jpg (http://www.ascaso.com/cafe/2005/eng_cafe05/dream.html)

I only use it for espresso, but my GF has been making some seriously delicious looking foamy things with it. The great thing is that it's actually cut down on my coffee intake since I just can't be bothered to pay for something that tastes nothing like what I could get at home :p

That is the real deal. Mine only really gets used on the weekends anymore because it is too much work to try to do that plus everything else in the morning before work. However you really cannot beat a freshly ground french press of coffee. Shit I think I might have to make some when I get home now.

Strangely enough I wake myself up with a glass of cold water. It's not that I hate coffee, but I've tried (albiet slowly) to change my dietary habits, and removing Caffene was one of them. I'm not 100% caffene free as I'll still drink coke and ice tea on the weekends, but gave up mountain dew, coffee, etc for the majority of time.

For those of you who say coffee doesn't affect you... it's only because you've built up a tolerance. Remove coffee from your daily/weekly diet, and I'll tell you the effects definitely change.

I have the Keurig Mini Red. I love it for a quick cup of coffee. Especially Tully's Kona.

I drink a lot of coffee. I'm not above K-cups or a pot of Folgers. I also have a Senseo, french press and an espresso maker. A machine for every need. :)

I think my go to coffee lately has been Starbucks Sumatra. I've been drinking it much more than other blends. There are several others I like better but I get tired of them quickly. That doesn't seem to happen with the Sumatra.

I have a Keurig and I love it. You have to find good deals on the coffee but I honestly haven't found any store/cafe coffee that I like more than my favorite Keurig cups.

I also drink my coffee black as black can be, so YMMV. If you fill it up with milk and sugar and other pansy stuff, you may not need something with nitrogen-packed coffee cups. ;)

I wasn't paying attention one morning and broke my french press (and my heart) not too long ago, and ended up replacing it with an Eva Solo Café Solo. (http://www.evasolo.com/products-cafesolo.html) Anyone looking for an utterly amazing cup of brewed coffee really owes it to themselves to give this thing a look:

http://www.evasolo.com/billeder/products-cafesolo-dele/cafe_foto2.jpg (http://www.evasolo.com/products-cafesolo.html)

It's ridiculously simple -- as the picture shows, you just pour in the water, give it a stir, put the silver mesh filter/spout thingy in the top, and wait 4-5 minutes. That's. It.

Where it differs from a french press - and where I think the noticeable upgrade in taste comes from - is that there is no plunging involved which could force some of the unwanted bitter components out into the coffee. You get absolutely none of that. Instead, the grounds are just in constant, gentle contact with the water until you're ready to drink it. Because it doesn't have to move, the mesh is also a little bit finer which gives you somewhat less silt in the bottom of your cup (although there's still a bit).

The result is an incredibly smooth, insanely full-bodied brew that reveals every last sweet nuance of your bean. Couldn't recommend it highly enough to any fan of the french press :)

My girlfriend is serious about her coffee and so are her friends. They talk about the scientific details and when acids and whatnot are released at what temperatures for what kinds of beans. A few of her friends bought their own coffee bean roasters, importing beans from Africa and can tell by listening when the bean has reached roasting perfection. Me? I love diner coffee. But all of them point to this device as the best way to make regular coffee (non-espresso):

I like both cheap "diner coffee" as civil calls it and and richer, dark roasts. Sometimes you want something that is rich and full, and sometimes you just want something that is really easy to drink.

However, my partner is a member of this coffee of the month club that mails him fair trade beans from different regions of the world and I have to admit, I LOVE the smell of grinding them. The coffee tastes better too, but that is really negligible to me. It is the smell that makes them worth it.

Yes, the Chemex is the best filter brewer, bar none. I used to use one, but eventually passed it along to a friend. I found that the filters were a bit on the pricey side for my liking (although there is no question that you're buying a serious step up from your basic supermarket paper cone).

Also, the wide top opening and lack of insulation meant that the brewing temperature tended to drop off very quickly (at least up here in the frigid arctic tundra it did), which wasn't giving as full an extraction as I like.

Contrary to what you might think, the neoprene cover on the Eva Solo isn't so much for keeping your brewed coffee warm (although it does do that). It's for keeping the brewing temperature stable, which is actually really important. 'Science in a cup' and all that :p

But that's not to say the Chemex does wrong. Those things will definitely brew an absolutely incredible, clean cup of coffee. For people who can't abide any silt in their cup, I don't think there's anything better.

I like both cheap "diner coffee" as civil calls it and and richer, dark roasts. Sometimes you want something that is rich and full, and sometimes you just want something that is really easy to drink.

I'm actually much the same. At home, I'll go to all kinds of ridiculous lengths to get the best brew I can, but if I'm out and about, I'll happily drink whatever's on offer. I have a definite soft spot for diner coffee.. somehow that's the only coffee that still has the power to give me the jitters ;)

I LOVE the smell of grinding them. The coffee tastes better too, but that is really negligible to me. It is the smell that makes them worth it.

Freshly ground coffee has to be one of life's greatest smells.. our bedroom is loft-style right above our kitchen, and the smell of ground coffee in the morning will cut through any brand of sleep without fail. It would be annoying if it didn't instantly make me happy.

Oh God...I LOVE coffee. I admit to being a coffee "snob" but it only goes to the extent that I want the freshest beans possible (still having the oil on them is key) and not over roasted. Ground in a burr grinder. You have to get pretty decent stuff if you drink it black. If you're going to add cream, flavoring, sugar, etc. then it doesn't really matter what you use. I've been contemplating roasting at home to get the absolute freshest and green beans are relatively inexpensive. There is a local roaster that sells in the grocery store that has been my favorite, though.

That Eva Solo looks really sweet but what warrants the $100 price tag?

That Eva Solo looks really sweet but what warrants the $100 price tag?

Well, I suppose part of the answer to that question lies in how much pleasure you derive from an absolutely superb cup of coffee :p But to be perfectly honest, there's not a lot of objective justification for the $100 MSRP (which, BTW, I believe is an old price).

The product itself is, however, one of those rare examples of design where form and function are in almost perfect harmony; the thing is really meticulously well thought out and executed considering how simple it actually is -- there are ridges on the bottom of the carafe which create just enough turbulence as you stir to swirl the grounds upwards as well as sideways so that you only need to give it a few good swoops and let it do its thing; the filter has an integral lid that 'flips' open when you pour just enough to let a small stream of coffee out, and then closes as soon as you stop, preventing any unnecessary heat loss; the way the filter sits in the carafe is designed such that you will never have any drips running down the side of this thing. Seriously. Never. You could drink coffee all day long on fine white linens without ever worrying about the pot making a ring if that's your idea of a good time. How they accomplished that is both stupidly simple and completely brilliant, and i have no idea why every spout in the world hasn't already been switched over to their system.

In the end though, all of that comes together to do the only thing that actually matters, and that's to make some fucking genius coffee. They gave it a 10/10 over at coffeegeek.com (http://coffeegeek.com/proreviews/quickshot/evasolocafesolo), which is truly no small feat..

So if you're like me and are a sucker for brilliant design and amazing coffee, this thing will kick your ass every time you use it :) And I suppose not having to buy filters ever again is a nice bonus.

But it's still a lot of scratch for what is arguably just a glass jug wearing a wetsuit with some fine mesh jammed in the top. That said I've never seen them being sold for the full asking price -- I paid $80CDN for ours in an already expensive store, so you could probably do a good bit better than that if you're crafty.

Being that we're all discussing this topic, how many of you drink cake instead of coffee? A lot of the time, I just don't have a chance to brew my own coffee, so I'll stop at Einstein's or Starbucks and grab a cup. Most of the time, I prefer black coffee, not only because I enjoy the taste, but because I like knowing I'm not getting all the sugar I don't need. On occasion I'll get into the mood for just a bit of cream and sugar; not much, but just a bit. However, the amusing thing to me is when people get coffee just as a base for cream and sugar. As I'm grabbing a top and a sleeve for my coffee, I look over and notice how many people make their coffee absolutely WHITE.

Also, I'm not too snobby about my coffee. I just like it strong, that's all. It's easy for me to detect when something has been watered down like crazy, in which case, I usually feel like I'm just drinking hot water.

LMAO 'cake'. Too perfect :D

Just beans and water for me. I can't stand those coffee-flavoured dairy beverages people concoct.

The thing that pisses me off most about them though is that a lot of times places will super-heat their coffee so that people who adulterate it with all manner of flavourings won't come back and complain that it's cold. Meanwhile I have to wait half an hour to drink mine just to avoid flaying the skin off the roof of my mouth!

I also object to having to order a "black coffee" when all I want is "coffee".

"Can I get you something to drink?"
"Sure, I'll have a coffee, please!"
"OK. Cream and sugar with that?"
"No, I'll just have some coffee."
"So just black."
"Sure. A coffee would be great, thanks."
"..."

Really gets some funny looks, but a guy's gotta stand up for what's right in this crazy mixed-up world.

My wife bought me a french press recently, from Bodum, and I've gone back to grinding my own coffee to get it nice and coarse. I'm still getting sludge in the bottom of the cup, along with dust in the coffee. Maybe I should grind it even less? Or is this normal? I don't mind too much, but it does give the coffee a much more bitter taste.

I started drinking black recently merely by accident. I've been irritated by coffee places that put too much cream in the coffee, or too much sugar, or both. So I've started asking for it on the side. If the coffee is shit, I'll add a bit.

I've found something really bizarre by drinking black. First, Dunkin Donuts doesn't taste that good to me (and never has). Tim Hortons fucked up my order and gave me hazelnut, so I'll have to test them again soon--didn't realize it until I was home. McDonalds uses a Newman's Own organic blend from Green Mountain, but the stores around me are mixing it too weak I think. It CAN be really good.

But the big shocker is this: I love Burger King's coffee. I went through the drive-thru just for a coffee one day since I was exhausted. I don't know if they use some cheap shit or a good name brand, but it comes out PERFECT black. I've driving through just for the coffee many times as a result, going out of my way just for that brew. It was Burger King's coffee that got me drinking black in the first place last month--I ordered it with cream and sugar but they don't mix it for you and instead put it on the side. I didn't have time to mix it while driving so I just drank it black...and now I'm a black enthusiast.

Drinking coffee black really lets you taste the coffee. Cream and sugar just mask it. Like putting ketchup on a good steak. I have never put anything in my tea, I don't know why I ever with my coffee.

I like IHOP's coffee. Although the number of sex offenders working the night shift there means I only go when I feel pressured to.

You're going to get some sediment in the cup with a french press no matter what, and grinding it too coarsely is going to backfire eventually by not getting a good amount of ground bean in contact with the water during the brew time. You want to grind slightly coarser than you would for filter-coffee, which is still fairly fine.. coarse sand, but not gravel, if that makes sense.

Best bet with regard to the sediment is to just get used to it, let your cup sit for a minute before you drink it to let things settle, and don't swish it around or swill back the last mouthful when you're drinking it.

If you're really dead-set against having any sediment, you could always decant the brewed coffee into a thermos through a filter. That'll get you a nice clean cup while avoiding the problem of having extra grounds sitting around getting over-extracted and bitter.

Also, make sure you're not pouring boiling water directly into the press or you'll get bitterness throughout the pot, and don't let it sit for too long before you plunge it -- ~4minutes (5 tops) should be good for most coffees, although the sweet-spot will depend somewhat on your roast/variety/grind. And plunge slowly :)

Because I don't want your kid to grow up without a father...I won't say you should be shot dead on the spot for saying you use ketchup on a good steak. I'm not even much of a meat eater (barely touch the stuff) but just the thought...you are insane! :p

I don't eat steak really, and I was using ketchup as a comparison for cream and sugar in coffee ruining the true taste. Reread what I wrote, silly man.

Ooops. Totally missed the simile. Sorry, spent to much time reading my own drivel during the day I melted my reading comprehension skills :p

The next time I see you putting ketchup in your coffee there's going to be trouble, mister!
