I am a sucker for the $5 deals that Steam has, but before I throw more money at them I was hoping for an opinion on it. I recall seeing someone here playing it ages ago, but don't remember who. What is this game and is it any good?

Well, the mod was brilliant, and were I not totally broke I'd buy the commercial version in a heartbeat especially at $5.

Red Orchestra is pretty different from anything else and it takes a little bit of work to get into, but the payoff is worth it. Not the sort of game for impatient run and gunners, however.

I desperately want to someday have the experience of running a proper player tank crew in that game.
The tanks are so fucking fun, they just feel right, nice and realistic but without being overcomplicated or anything. It's just that with the AI you're basically stuck manning a 3-4 man vehicle solo, and that gets hard.

RO is awesome. I still fire it up now and again and I've been playing it since it was a mod years back.

Play one of the Arad maps (there are servers that have nothing but these). You can easily man a solo tank in that map since the distances are so large. You just move, aim, fire and keep firing until someone gets a bead on you.

The main one I played in the mod version I forget the name of, but it was a winter map, with a river crossing, with one big rail bridge and another pair of bridges that connected to a little island.
I played it most because it was relatively small, and it set up some nice long corridors for picking off enemy tanks from fairly long range.

This sounds really interesting. I always liked slower-paced FPS games, and the Eastern front of WW2 is just crazy. Sounds like a good recipe for a mod.

Wish I had seen this thread earlier, I would of advocated picking it up especially for 5 bucks. I really enjoy the game, but really enjoy slower passed shooters such as this one.

Rise from the Grave, oh Ancient thread of yore, for today, The Orchestra of Crimson is again a mere Five Dollars!
Along with a new patch that adds another map and achievement support if you care about that sort of thing.

It was interesting to play, I'd really like to see what they could do with Vietnam. I don't think Call of Duty would work well there, but a realistic multiplayer game like RO might be cool.
