View Full Version : PAX East 2010 - CoG Roll Call
Ten19

PAX East 2010 in Boston is only 85 days away! That's barely enough time to cull together a list of CoG'ers who will be attending. Feel free to post in this thread if your attendance status changes and I'll update it periodically.
As we get closer to the big day, this will help us set up gatherings and the like.

Put me down as a maybe.
I'll go ahead and get my pass ASAP, and worry about the rest later. I'm sure I can find room for to stay with somebody, though I don't think I'll be sleeping in the floor for six nights again. And if worse comes to worst, I could drive up there.

I was thinking about coming up Friday night and just doing Sat/Sun, but considering the money I'll be saving taking the bus and staying at a friend's place I may take Friday off, despite the hit to the paycheck.
Is it typically all day Friday? Or a late-afternoon/evening type of thing?

Huh, I think mine was around 14.5%. Still high, but could be much worse. I will say this about the prices. Priceline was accepting my bid of $50/night for a three star in the Back Bay area for the time period. Granted Priceline uses a much wider geographic area than Hotwire, but sometimes cost outweighs walking distance.

Well I was planning on brining my PC for all three days. If it's anything like Quakecon, and my guess it is, security is top notch. They make you write down EVERYTHING you bring it, and they check that list when you check out. You can't take out anything that's not on the list.
If you go with a group of people, you’re allowed to “save” seats of a sort, but you need to mention it in your registration. Since no one did that, I’m not sure how it’s going to work for PAX. I’d imagine they’d let you save. Worst case scenario is I could go early and get in line. The line at Quakecon was huge. But it was also free.

There's really not. The best down time is spent on Sumos in the handheld lounge, or back at the hotel resting up. Other than that, you're at a panel, a concert, the show floor, or at local places to eat.
I think if it's your first PAX, you should skip the BYOC this year and just go and experience it. Then see if you want to do the BYOC next year.

From what I understand, you're not gonna have a choice really. BOYC spots are first come first serve. When they run out, you get put on a huge waiting list which barely drops unless someone def knows they're not going. In which case they prob won't even bother to tell PAX they're not coming, which will result in people finding out about this at the door, rather than in an e-mail days before your flight.
The reason I'm saying this it doesn't make sense to take up a BYOC spot, go through the painful security process, setup your stuff, and then barely game.
Heh, the idea of having downtime at PAX makes me giggle.
Well there's obviously nothing gonna be going on when the floor closes for the day... what are you gonna do then? go back to your hotel room?
edit: maybe im wrong, the NorEast isn't as popular for gaming as it is in Texas and NorthWest, so maybe it will be very casual and plenty of spots. (I doubt it tho). Quakecon 07 and 08 were down right insane. And they're not even close to the size of PAX.

The show floor does close, but there are still panels and concerts going through the night until around 2 AM. Then you get back up for the show to open again in the morning. I can't think of a single second during the weekend where I thought, "Now what am I going to do?" because we were always moving to the next thing, whether it was a panel, a meal, a signing, concert, or whatever. I have never been so exhausted, but it was the greatest weekend of my life and it just wouldn't seem right to spend all that time just playing the same old games like I would be during the rest of the year.

Yeah, but if you want to play in the PC Free-Play area, you just sign in and go...we've done that at two previous PAX's now. We had some time until the concerts started and we all went and played TF2 for about an hour, but NONE of us brought our own PCs.

Also, what's this crap about downtime and BYOC? Your day starts early lining up, then you're either in a panel or on the showfloor all day and when expo hall closes you're going either going to a concert, out drinking or watching a movie. If you're really lucky, you can squeeze in some time to go out to find food. Then you go to sleep and hope to make it through the next day. Downtime? Good luck with that.

Never having been to Quakecon, I assume that the LAN is a big part of it. It's not at PAX. There's BYOC, but that's just a really small part of PAX. PAX is mainly about three things: Expo Hall, Theaters (panels, presentations, keynote, ..) and concerts. There's other stuff to do (everything from tabletop to console gaming and sumo lounges) and while there is a LAN, there's already too much to see without sitting at a LAN all weekend.
If it's anything like Seattle, you might want to leave your car at home, it's going to be huge and traffic is going to be shit, especially if everyone decides to drive that weekend.

Both quotes are entirely correct. PAX != QuakeCon. Even in the larger LAN space this year, there was only 350 BYOC spots, and that was sold out in a week or so. It's not a matter of people made up there minds, it's such a minuscule part of PAX that time ends up being used elsewhere. Everyone I know that had BYOC passes used it more as a storage/rest area. Sure, the option is there to play all day, but in all actuality, you're going to be too busy to be sitting with about 350 other people playing games you play near everyday.
And I might be corrected, but I believe BYOC closes the same time the PC and Console freeplay areas close for the night.

Adding in the BYOC info here.
The reason I'm saying this it doesn't make sense to take up a BYOC spot, go through the painful security process, setup your stuff, and then barely game.
First off, there is nothing painful about it. When you check in you get stickers, the stickers get scanned, and you get your badge. When you leave and re-enter the area you're just asked to show your BYOC badge. When you check out the stickers get scanned again.
For East they haven't decided how many BYOC slots there will be or how much they will cost. People usually don't return their BYOC passes, they sell for more than 3-day passes when you're trying to buy them off of someone that can't make it.
There is a possibility that there will be a seating chart, there have been seating charts in the past. When a seating chart is used the slots are either when you buy the pass or when you check in.
Of course you aren't going to have any BYOC pictures in the CoG flickr stuff because none of you were in BYOC...
I can tell you that BYOC is not dull or boring, East will be a bit different because THE CHAIR isn't making a cross country trip. There are private contests, events, and tournaments that happen in BYOC.
BYOC closes when the convention closes. At the end of the day, after the concerts when everyone is kicked out of the building, that is when BYOC closes as well.

The LAN is a big part of it, but the panels, concerts and presentations are huge too. Remember Quakecon is where they announced Quake Live, showed the first Rage video, announced the iD package on steam, and some of the best gamers in the world come to Quakecon for the tournaments. I know Boston well enough to have my car around. It's not gonna be a big deal, ESP in the area it's in.

Sl1p, I am not sure if I will be able to make PAX Prime anytime soon, as money just sucks here in the D.
The difference between PAX and Quakecon is that PAX is about a celebration of gaming culture and you may play some games while there. Quakecon, however is about a LAN party with some side events. I love LAN parties, been to some huge ones, but PAX is quite different from any LAN.
Quakecon is also aimed at the ultra-hardcore crowd while PAX is just for the... hardcore I'd guess? I saw Actors, musicians and many game designers when I was there, and 75% of my memories do not really revolve around holding a controller in my hands there.
So I think you should do the BYOC thing Duke, but expect to be leaving your PC alone quite often as there is so much to do.

I think Duke is just kind of confused on the whole PAX thing. All he has to relate it to is Quakecon, even though they are totally different. Um, guys, I think you're all a little confused.
PAX is a convention for the people. The people like LANs so there is a LAN, the people like playing table top games so there is a TableTop area, people like concerts so there are concerts, people like hearing people talk so there are panels, people like looking at and trying new stuff so there is an expo hall...
Just because you like one thing and not another does not mean everyone likes the same thing. Prime 2009 was the first year PAX as a whole sold out while BYOC has sold out and gotten larger every single year.
We have an insane amount of fun in the BYOC area, most of you just don't know about it because you weren't there.
**EDIT** One of the brand new attendees that also got a BYOC badge for his first PAX was selected for one of the contests that were held in BYOC. He talked to me for quite a bit because he followed some of the BYOC enforcers downstairs on our smoke breaks. He said at one point that without the BYOC area he would not have had as much fun. He absolutely loved the contest he was in.
BYOC is a community, if you're not a part of it, you just can't understand what goes on there.

Funny how apologizing involves telling me I was too drunk to remember what I said while I know that I wasn't. Followed by completely ignoring me for the rest of PAX and coming up with the excuse of "being on a mission", whatever that means.

tw, a buddy who's a convention vet told me that usually, they pack as many people in the same room and split the cost, that that's what he's done for the past few years.

Apparently sakuracon screwed that up. What I've been hearing is that Sakuracon attendees have tried to put too many people in the same room and that the Sheraton and other hotels (at least the Seattle ones) are now being more careful with how many people they're letting in.
I guess that it's still possible, but I wouldn't recommend more than 4 people in the same room.

I would have liked to attend as I'm in Maine and could have taken the train down, but I'm gonna have to pass. My wife probably would have accompanied me too. She asked if I was still going to the convention thingy recently and I told her no.
It would have been even better if it was in summer or during the spring when the Sox were playing. But with a baby I don't think we could afford a hotel, train, the convention and food for a weekend. I do need to trek to Boston to take her to a game, however, since she's never been and is a huge Red Sox fan.

Last night Scott convinced me... So I booked my hotel room. Expect awesomeness.
I got in at the Buckminster (http://www.bostonhotelbuckminster.com/) the rooms are cheap there and its a OK hotel from what I remember. Its one T stop away from the Hynes and a cab should cost less than $10 to get back and forth. Here is the YELP (http://www.yelp.com/biz/buckminster-hotel-boston) review for it. I am staying from the 24th - 28th and its costing me about $100/day for a room with a queen sized bed. Much cheaper than the hotel near PAX that I looked at for about $200/day =)
If anybody is worried about what bars and stuff to go to in Boston, dont. Its a college town and there are more bars than people. =) Though I was always a fan of Peoples Republik (http://www.yelp.com/biz/peoples-republik-cambridge) in Cambridge and The Burren (http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-burren-somerville) in David Sq. If you want to get sloshed I recommend the Hong Kong (http://www.yelp.com/biz/hong-kong-at-harvard-square-cambridge) in Harvard Square, where you can get a few scorpion bowls and forget which hotel you were staying at.

The Burren is indeed an excellent place (if not quite as insanely awesome on weekends as it was in the late 90s, when the Tarbox Ramblers played every Saturday night). Davis Square in general is a good place to spend time.
I expect you'll do fine with the Buckminster, Miah, aside from having to wade through crowds of BU students. You can very easily walk to the Hynes from there (three blocks east, two blocks south, two blocks east) and it's very possible that you'll get there faster than you would in a cab.
I expect to be around for PAX, but I don't know how much yet- it'll depend on work and other obligations. BTW, a few of us have been tossing around ideas for hangouts and other recommendations here (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?t=14891)...

Well, what we did last PAX is we created a Google Doc that contained everyone's phone # (they said which way is best to contact them) and their Twitter account. Those with smartphones and Twitter access followed everyone on that list. Those without keep in contact with several people on that list via txt to keep in the loop. We don't have a set 'social schedule' for PAX because it is such a dynamic event with many things going on.
For example, if I were at PAX today and I decided that I was going to have lunch at 11, I would pop a Twitter post up saying so and ask if anybody else would like to join. I'd always get a response and we would then coord via Twitter or Txt.
If you haven't got Twitter at all then you are going to have to be pro-active in txting to find out what's going on. Those updating the Twitter feeds won't also be sending out Txt broadcasts. At least this was the case in Seattle.

Hey folks. I'll be headed to PAX East in case any of you want to meet up at some point to say hello. Only going for Friday and Sunday though so my time is limited. I may stick around Saturday morning but I've got to drive home for the day (the planning of PAX just happened to fall on my girl's birthday).
Would love to meet up as well, I'll be there on Friday and Saturday.

The other really simple step is to make sure that you search for the #COGPAX tag on Twitter. Pretty much every planning Tweet that went out had that tag attached to it.

Also, Alatheia: I will not be needing a ride from the airport this time. I'm telling you this now so that there's no confusion later.
This made me lol.
Also, the whole twitter thing doesn't work for me either. I can maybe access it in the convention center itself, if I can access a wi-fi network, but I'm not going to pay data roaming charges just to access twitter.

I hope that everyone has a good time at PAX East! I'm hoping to make it to Seattle this fall.

Although if the Nexus were to come out a day or two earlier it might have worked.

I had just read this and my hopes were up (via BGR (http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2010/03/06/verizon-already-training-some-employees-on-nexus-one/)):
some curious customers and some rather knowledgeable reps, but it certainly looks to us as if Verizon has begun training — at least some of its employees — on an EV-DO variant of the Google Nexus One. A tentative release date has not yet been communicated trough the chain of command, but apparently this sucker will be sold in Big Red’s retail stores across the country once it’s available. Again, this is about as confirmed (or unconfirmed) as it gets
Anyone else get their pass yet?

<marvinbot> it's only 12 days, 19:05:22 until PAX lands in Boston (2010/03/26, 11:00:00)
Hurrah!
Also, is there anything planned for Thursday night? My plane lands pretty late so I don't know if I'll actually be able to make any hypothetical visit to a bar, but at least I can try to make it. I'm hoping on getting the early shift, which means that the first time I'll be able to catch up with anyone will be Friday afternoon.

I plan to start drinking before I leave Atlanta, Crown Room FTW! When my bro and I land mid afternoon on Thurs, we'll check in at the Sheraton and probably blast the COGites on Twitter with something thoroughly intoxicating.
See you in 7 days.

I effin' LOVED the sumo lounge...some of the best convos and laughs were had there and the Snorlax was the BEST by far. Never laughed so hard in my life!

Peeeeeeerhaps.
If you'd like to be part of the PAX East 2010 impressions rodeo (similar to the pax prime feature from last year here (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?t=12033)), I need your e-mail address so I can invite you to the google document containing a list of games in which you can leave small blurbs.
A few guidlines/things to know:
Stick to the format outlined at the top of the document (for my sanity, please).
I won't use all of them.
I reserve the right to edit them slightly (for frontpagedness).
Keep them to two sentences or so.
Use your own words.
Mention things that normal coverage may not include.
Keep in mind where the game is in development.
Be honest.
Don't be afraid to have a bit of fun with it.
I'll send out the first round of invites tonight once I finish the preliminary game list.

And by long, long time you mean a few weeks. I think the thread served a purpose in the months coming up to the event and was recently (and correctly so) superseded by Voodoo's google doc. If you're just miffed that I overlooked you that's fine, but you could have PM'd me or something :p
