Does anyone play this free to play mmorpg? I was about to give it a whirl but the 3gig download made me want to know if it's worth it or not first..

Never heard of it until your post. I looked around for reviews and they're all around 5-6/10. I'm not going to download it after reading up. But, if you're okay with 6/10, go for it!

When did this go free? It's still 30 bucks on Steam and it still claims that you have to pay a (tiered) subscription fee. Still, like the Cappin said, it's supposed to be pretty ho-hum.

As far as I can remember (and it's a pretty vague memory) from the GiantBomb videos and Bombcasts where they talked about it, it pretty much immediately tanked as a subscription based game, and thus decided to offer a free-to-play model.

As far as I can tell, though, it's only "kind of" free, with an "unlimited free trial" but still selling most of the stuff that actually makes the game. There's a breakdown of the free vs pay features here (http://www.crimecraft.com/compare_subscriptions).

Free players can't:

customize their characters
play ranked PVP
use the mail system
use the auction house
use the bank
use the voice chat system
join or run gangs
use the crafting system

So in short, the "free" version is just a very small taste of what I already hear is not a super game. Given how down everyone was on this at its release, and the very lackluster quick look videos I saw of it (I'm sure they're still up, head over to GiantBomb and search for it), I can't imagine the free version is going to be any more successful at bringing in players in the long run than the pay version was.

The Steam version comes with a bunch of unique bonuses (and I imagine some period of "paid for" time at one of the tiered subscription levels). They've got a few deals with distributors (http://www.crimecraft.com/download) under that sort of arrangement.

So for free you are getting a sub par arena shooter, and if you decide to pay you get a sub par arena shooter with RPG trappings? <goblin>Hmm, interesting.</goblin>
