I think I remember hearing something about this a while ago, but apparently they actually have a trailer out for the movie now.

Oh joy!
I'm watching this. It's going to be a lulzworthy film.

Even bad movies can have good trailers (Terminator: Salvation, for example) so when a movie has a bad or even just mediocre/uninspiring trailer, I don't have high hopes.

I don't get the hate?
This looks pretty true to the games, and I think Jake's gonna make a fine Prince.
One large popcorn, please!

Yea, I think it looks fine.
And what was wrong with Terminator Salvation? I really enjoyed it.

I don't think it'll be a good movie but I do think it'll be entertaining. I loved Prince of Persia: Sands of Time so this should be a fun summer movie.

I'm not one to judge so quickly. Especially with a trailer like that. It did enough to leave me interested, considering a lot of elements from the video game are present.

Exactly. What about this makes it seem like an awful film? It looks fine to me.

Aside from the rather cliche voice-over from the female character, I thought it at least looked like an entertaining film.

Sure are a lot of crackers in that Persia. Even the prince.

Yeah, I'm a bit torn on it...but, I'd probably go see it even if I wasn't. Like Cyndair, I'm sucker for adventure films, and I generally see video game movies just out of morbid curiosity.
On the other hand, I think the trailer showed off more than enough cliche to give me pause under other circumstances.
Sure are a lot of crackers in that Persia. Even the prince.
And this. :p
Though, the time for being confused about that was back when they cast the prince in the first place.

It even looks like they included a lot of parkour elements that are in the games. It's not high art or anything but it looks Pirates of the Carribean fun.

This is basically what I was going to post. Seems like they could have at least gotten a hot darker skinned chick for the princess.

They got Gemma Aetherton who's fricking British as they come. Jake looks pretty cool, it works for me, but she just doesn't compare to her in-game counterpart.

I'll watch it, but I'm filing it away in the mindless entertainment catagory.
Hell I enjoyed the crap out of Bloodrayne, never laughed so much in my life.
I think I just have a low expectation level when it comes to game to movies adaptations. Doesn't make them any less entertaining, just doesn't always make them good...

I'm not sure what "technically white" means. But it sure doesn't seem to mean white like Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton are white.

Come on, fellas... he said technically. For instance, if you look at an Iranian's specifications, you'll see that his RGB value is #FFFFFF, and that he's capable of fluorescing with a 6000k white point at 120 candles.
Technically, that's pretty damned white.

QFT!
Persia's cultural roots can be traced back to the Aryans, a group of European origin. Many would probably recognize them as the same Aryan's the Nazis were obsessed with, though this is the real Aryans, not some silly super race invented by a syphilitic. Technically speaking, if we can really consider race as more than just a cultural concept, Persian people are white by today's standards of what "white" means. This seperates them from the cultures that surround them, who are largely of Arabic origin.
And all that to say...Jake Gyllenhaal and whatever her name is are somewhat believable as Persians, especially considering the setting of ancient Persia.
Looks too CG'd. I was hoping for more practical effects whenever they announced it.

Seriously, this looks like crap. Pirates of the Caribbean without a sense of humor, and a charisma-less leading man. And goddamn is that CG terrible. I hate it when movies don't know how to subtly blend CG around practicals. If you can't do it right, you may as well just go with stop motion claymation.
This looks like something I may watch to drunkenly make fun of with friends, or catch if a Rifftrax is made. Granted, it may just be a poorly made trailer that isn't really representative of the movie as a whole, but it's bad enough that I really doubt it.

I'll probably see it for a fun movie night.. I don't understand why people are so hard on movies that supposed to be pure entertainment.

Because poorly done pure entertainment is not fun. I always hear that Transformers is just pure entertainment, but the first was boring, and the second was painfully stupid. They may be fun to make fun of with friends, but that's about all they are good for.

Persia's cultural roots can be traced back to the Aryans, a group of European origin.
I admit that I'm not particularly well studied in anthropology, but I didn't think there was a definite answer concerning the origins of the Aryan tribes that invaded the Indus Valley region, but there are a number of competing (and incompatible) theories. Stating categorically that they were European seems a little off, unless there's some new findings I'm not aware of... which is, of course, entirely possible.
On an odd note, Jake Gyllenhaal is reportedly Swedish on his father's side and Jewish on his mother's side, which would mean he's part Semitic and thus not entirely white by such standards. If such standards made any sense. And they don't.
Honestly, breaking people down into white, black, asian, whatever just isn't sufficient. They're abstract categories with little basis in reality. So, colors aside.... I'll just say that neither Jake Gyllenhaal nor Gemma Arterton look particularly Persian to me. They wouldn't have been my first casting choices.

While I have my own theories, your completely right. It was a bit irresponsible of me to state their origin's so definitively, being that they were a culture without a written language and with relatively little art to identify their origins. However, its largely accepted that the Aryans were characteristically different than the people they came into contact with upon their invasion of Indus Valley. Specifically, it my memory serves me right, these cultures often noted their distinct light skin. While that doesn't make them European, it tends to lean towards them being of European origin. If I were to hazard a guess from what I know of their warrior culture, I'd lean toward Scandinavia, but I'm no Historian.
From what I know of modern Iran (including a nice Iranian guy who took some time to explain this for me), they consider themselves to be of the same origin as the rest of the Western world. They're the same Persia that clashed with the Greeks, Romans and the rest of our Mediteranian Western lineage. This makes modern Iranians feel distinctly different then the Arab states that surround them.
To carry this stupid tangent even further, most societies with an aristocracy develop a system of physical traits that denote wealth and power. In the case of Persia, its an easy logical jump to say that royalty were most likely much lighter skinned then the majority of the average Persians in their empire. This could tie to a more direct link to the Aryan blood line, but more likely has alot to do with spending your life inside a palace, instead of working outside in the desert sun.
All of this considered, a light skinned Persian prince is pretty believable in my book. I honestly can't believe I just put that much thought into a video game movie...especially in defense of Jake Gyllenhaal. I feel kinda dirty.

Why even make it so complicated, no one really cares about the Persians. It's based on the game, so we want it to reflect the game.

I'm surprised they didn't get Aishwarya Rai for the princess, or Alexander Siddig (Dr. Bashir from DS9) for some role.

Hey, I'm glad ya did. I really enjoy getting other people's perspectives on this kind of stuff, especially when it's as well thought out as your post was. Most discourse on the internet seems to devolve quickly, and I'm honestly surprised and delighted any time I can have a conversation like this.
You should feel dirty, though. :)

Had to google him, but Alexander Siddig looks pretty good. Aishwarya Rai tho looks totally wrong for the setting.
