Apparently, thanks to Left 4 Dead. Shacknews has the word (http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/55364) from Doug Lombardi himself.

"Well, it won't be this year," said Lombardi when asked about the next update. "But we're going to keep evolving TF2. Once Left 4 Dead wraps, you'll hear us clamoring more about [the next TF2 update]."

Okay, Valve fans, it's time to divide into L4D supporters and TF2 players and get to the rioting and class warfare.

This does suck, but I fully expect L4D to be awesome so I can't be mad.

This is surprising. I thought the initial plan was to roll out all class updates before 2008 ends.

As much as I love them, this is Valve. There were plans at one point to have the HL2 Episodes comes out yearly :)

I just hope that the lack of updates and L4D doesn't kill off TF2, since I'm sure lots of us TF2 fans will migrate to L4D for a bit. I'm still hoping they sneak something tf2 related out for xmas, even if it's 'just' a new map.

(I'd even settle for geometry fixes for badwater...)

Slightly sucky, but I am confident we will see class updates for all classes eventually. Though, to be truthful, I would have been happier if they delayed L4D. Not that I would have expected them to, but it would have made me happier. ;)

This is my only worry. Especially since Valve has said that L4D will not be shipping with Versus mode enabled for all maps, but that it would eventually be updated to do so. If they're planning multiple updates to L4D (I imagine at least one update rather soon after Nov 19th for the inevitable bugfixes) that doesn't leave much bandwidth at Valve for other stuff.

You have Portal 2, Half-Life Episode 3, more TF2 class updates, and L4D updates clamoring for attention. That a lot in Valve man-hours.

They probably just had to pull the team off of TF2 to get maximum coverage for L4D. Support L4D long enough to get it running and then go back and care for the game that has it's own life already.

I'd already posted about this in the TF2 thread. It's sad news for me, who is having a problem deciding whether to maintain my WAR subscription to justify the purchase or getting Left4Dead (or neither :()

While I'm disappointed that they weren't able to get all the updates out this year, I am pretty sure that once L4D comes out, I'll be too busy killing zombies to care. It'll be a month or so before I am ready to go back to TF2 anyways.

There are what, 2 months left in the year? For whatever TF2 will lack, and I do not give a shit, Valve has made up with solid improvement of Steam, and Left4Dead, a game I give a shit about.

I would rather have than than another reason to not install TF2 again.

Well, while he'd certainly be dead, it doesn't really qualify as "fire".:p
