Is anyone around these parts familiar with the Fort Lauderdale area? My wife and I are heading down there on Sunday for a few days and I'm curious about what there is that I can see/do for relatively little money and within a cheap cab ride from wherever the hell it is I'm staying.

Gotta love tagging along while your wife is going to a conference. I can just hole up in the hotel for the week with my laptop/DS/PSP for all I care. I just know I'll have a week with no kids! WOO!

Bump. Come on... there must be SOME Floridians around these parts that can tell me what to do. Otherwise I'll be sitting in a hotel room gaming all week... which isn't bad, mind you...

Even some good places to eat would be appreciated.

Hey man...I'm in those parts. Tell me where you're staying and the type of things you might like to do, and I may be able to help with though.

Seeing/doing things in Florida for no money though? That may be harder ;)

It's not that we have no money, but she'll be in a conference a few of those days and we don't want to spend a small fortune as we're getting our basement finished in a week or two as well...

Is there anything museum or just touristy to see in Ft. Lauderdale? Besides watching the hurricanes scour the swimmers from the beach? :)

If you have the time and the hurricanes allow it make sure you go deep sea fishing. I can't recommend any places in Ft. Lauderdale but I'm sure you'll find something close-by.

Oh, I feel like crap. I didn't subscribe to the thread, so I forgot to respond. There's a museum of art in fort lauderdale, right off of Los Olas. You could do a charter boat intercoastal thing, those usually aren't too much...glass bottom boat ride. I'm disenchanted with it after living here so long, but it'd be worth taking a trip out to the everglades since you've never seen it.

There's a pretty nice museum in Boca Raton too. You can stroll along Riverwalk... Also, the Seminole Hard Rock is a pretty cool place if you want to go out one night. That's in Hollywood, not too far. There's an improv club there as well. Trying to think of some other things as well, but I don't know if it's already too late!

Thanks Torre.

We hit the beach today and got far too much shell-shards in unmentionable places for me to want to bother doing that again tomorrow. I think I'll just lounge by the pool and play Fallout all day while my wife is in her conference.

We spent most of the day puttering around the Intracostal Waterway on the Water Taxi. You guys have waaaay too much money down here. It's kind of sickening.

I did get a snazzy Megaman shirt at Hot Topic (yeah, I know it's a trendy place but they don't have them up where I'm from and I haven't seen any other slightly nerdy t-shirt stores anywhere). We also had supper at the Cheesecake Factory, which blew me away. I need to start an online petition to get one of those and a few Einstein Bros. Bagel stores back home. Dear lord, they are both very yummy places to eat at.

I will say that I quite like this city. If I ever win the lottery, I'll move down here :)

I love the Cheesecake Factory. Almost as much as I love Blue Dragon! ;)

I have an aunt a few hours north of Ft. Lauderdale, and a cousin and his family right there, as well as a brother-in-law near Orlando. I love Florida. Love it. Great memories.

Glad you're having fun!

Seriously. A lot of the stuff around these parts are just tacky tourist traps but there are a few shops that they don't have up in Canada that just blow me away.

If Einstein Bros. Bagels moved into Canada, it would kill any competition. I've never had a better bagel than the ones I had from there today... Mmm....

And The Cheesecake Factory was amazing. Not only was there a lot of food, it was very, very good. And the cheesecake wasn't half bad either!

I am, but I'm on the NE tip of Florida. I've been to Fort Lauderdale several times, but it's been awhile so I don't have much to tell you.
